SUMMARY:Girard College Historical Campus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Take a guided tour behind the 10-foot wall of Girard College to explore its history and architecture.\n\n\nEnjoy a guided tour behind the famous 10-foot wall of Girard College with Director of Historical Resources Kathy Haas. As we stroll around this 43-acre oasis in the middle of the city\, we’ll talk about Stephen Girard\, the 19th-century multi-millionaire who left his fortune to create a school for financially-disadvantaged children; the monumental architecture of the school\, including Founder’s Hall\, a National Historic Landmark; the generations of students who have lived and learned here (and still do); and the powerful civil rights activism that led to the school’s desegregation. \nThe tour will begin at the front gate of Girard College (corner of S. College and Corinthian Avenues)

SUMMARY:PhilaLandmarks Early Concert Series Presents James Reese
DESCRIPTION:James Reese and Daniel Overly will present Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin (The Beautiful Maid of the Mill) at the Hill-Physick House on Friday\, January 10\, 2025 at 7PM. In this hourlong collection of songs with poetry by Wilhelm Müller\, we follow an earnest and terribly naive young man as he meets and falls in love with the daughter of the mill where he works. As the piece unfolds\, so does their relationship; unfortunately for the young man\, it does not unfold happily. We meet other characters in the story: the vibrant green field\, the forget-me-not flower\, and most importantly\, the babbling brook; whose rushing waters provide the background music for the entire tale. As observers\, we travel deeper and deeper into the young man’s troubled psychology. His desperation to keep the miller maid drives him to jealousy\, paranoia\, and ultimately\, contemplation of succumbing to his worst impulses. Schubert’s music in this song cycle is truly stunning – it features shatteringly beautiful and simple melodies in conversation with gorgeous\, intricate music from the piano. He wrote the piece in collaboration with Müller in 1823 – during the period when Dr. Philip Syng Physick was living and hosting the country’s elite at what is now known as the Hill-Physick House. Hearing this song cycle in the Hill-Physick House will be a fascinating parallel to the intimate living rooms in Vienna where it was premiered by Schubert himself.

SUMMARY:Winter Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Connor O’Hea at Rushton Woods Preserve to explore our winter birds! Even though our feathered friends are quieter this time of year\, they are still abundant everywhere. Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated Sparrows flit about the underbrush\, Eastern Bluebirds hunt from their posts in the farm fields\, and sometimes even Eastern Towhees can be spotted in the thickets. As an ecologist and avid birder\, Connor has the privilege of working closely with birds in both the field and the hand. His experience ranges from watching birds in his backyard to bird banding for long-term monitoring purposes (including for Rushton Woods Banding Station and Foreman’s Branch Bird Observatory). REGISTER HERE Connor is particularly passionate about how changes in our environment are affecting bird populations\, and he loves sharing these insights with others. He enjoys leading nature walks like this one\, meeting like-minded people and those new to the subject: “I look forward to meeting you all\, pointing out some of our local feathered friends\, and answering any bird-related questions you might have along the way!”   Accessibility & Other Details: This bird walk will be light and easy with mostly even ground\, with access to bathroom facilities in the Rushton Conservation Center if needed. SUMMARY:Philly Goat Project Christmas Tree-Cycles
DESCRIPTION:The Philly Goat Project’s Christmas Tree-Cycle Festivals are back! This year Philly Goat Project is hosting three Christmas Tree-Cycle events\, the first two at their home at The Farm at Awbury Arboretum and the third at Laurel Hill West Cemetery. \nEvent Details:\n● Saturday\, January 4\, 2025 (Rain date: January 5) – The Farm at Awbury Arboretum\n● Saturday\, January 11\, 2025 (Rain date: January 12) – The Farm at Awbury Arboretum\n● Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 (Rain date: January 19) – Laurel Hill West Cemetery \nAll three events take place from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. \nThese highly anticipated events are family-friendly farm festivals in support of the nonprofit. These donations support Philly Goat Project’s free year-round programming\, including community goat walks\, children’s literacy events in libraries & schools\, environmental education events throughout city parks\, youth job training programs\, animal-assisted therapy events\, and bereavement programming. \nDonated Christmas trees provide delicious snacks for the goats\, and what they don’t eat is turned into wood chips for trails in city parks and community gardens thanks to a partnership with the Philadelphia Sanitation Department. Decorations should be removed from trees before donating them. \nGuests can enjoy an afternoon packed with activities at this year’s Christmas Tree-Cycle festivals\, including: \n● Farm Explorations: Discover the magic of the farm.\n● Roaring Fire Pit: Warm up with free s’mores and hot cocoa.\n● Games: Kids can participate in fun games in the Farm Olympics at Awbury and games for all ages at both locations\n● Goat Petting Zone: Meet and cuddle the goats of Philly Goat Project.\n● Quiet Visiting Area: A calm space for guests with special needs.\n● Philly Goat Project Swag Tables: Swag will be available\, including Philly Goat Project’s 2025 calendar showcasing the goats at Philadelphia landmarks. This year’s calendar features the goats on Lincoln Financial Field\, home of the Philadelphia Eagles\, and on stage at the Kimmel Center alongside the Philadelphia Orchestra. \nAttendees are welcome to join the festivities even without a tree. \nSee Philly Goat Project’s social media and website for more details!

SUMMARY:Apple Picking with Eve
DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia Ethical Society will host the first public screening of Apple Picking with Eve\, the latest poem video in the WeWomen series. This evocative multimedia piece delves into the interplay between history\, identity\, and memory\, challenging traditional narratives and offering new perspectives on historical memory through the voices of historic female characters and inanimate objects.\nApple Picking with Eve began as a poem over ten years ago\, and has since transformed into a complex and layered work after Moss-Vreeland created 84 pages of mixed-media artwork and translated to film. Drawing from themes of perception\, memory\, and the reframing of historical narratives\, the video explores how personal and collective identities are shaped\, recorded\, and reimagined. The piece features the voices of 6 local women of varying disciplines.\nDate: Sunday\, January 12\, 2025\nTime: 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM\nLocation: Philadelphia Ethical Society\, 1906 Rittenhouse Square\nThe event will feature:\nA screening of Apple Picking with Eve\nA discussion about the creative process and themes of the project\nThis event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience an innovative work that bridges poetry\, history\, and visual art.
