SUMMARY:Sustainable Narratives: Visualizing Data\, Design\, and Community
DESCRIPTION:What stories can data tell about our world? How can design shape a more sustainable future?\n\n\nWhat stories can data tell about our world? \nHow can design shape a more sustainable future? \nSustainable Narratives: Visualizing Data\, Design\, and Community invites viewers to explore these questions through a curated collection of visual works that intersect data\, sustainability\, and community engagement. \nThis exhibition\, led by Huiwon Lim\, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Penn State\, presents both solo works as a graphic designer and design educator\, as well as collaborative projects with students\, offering diverse perspectives on how data can be transformed into powerful narratives. \nThe showcased projects reflect on pressing global issues—climate change\, social equity\, and community resilience—while exploring creative solutions through design. \nThe exhibited works aim to inspire meaningful conversations about our shared responsibility for a sustainable future. By translating complex data into accessible visuals\, the exhibition challenges viewers to rethink their relationship with information\, environment\, and community. \nThrough data-driven storytelling\, we illuminate unseen patterns\, foster understanding\, and highlight the power of design to drive social impact. \nPenn State Great Valley strives to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals in our community to engage fully. The campus includes accessible and gender neutral restroom\, dedicated parking spaces\, elevators\, lactation room\, step-free access\, and a complimentary wheelchair. \nIf you require any accommodation not listed above\, or have questions about the physical access provided\, please contact Becky Stanko at rus1078@psu.edu or call 610-648-3236.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Lavett Ballard: The People Who Could Fly
DESCRIPTION:Lavett is creating new works that will represent and amplify African folklore and tribal stories told from a Black woman’s perspective.\n\n\nArtist Statement\nThis body of work is inspired by cherished Storytime moments with my granddaughter\, particularly our shared love for The People Could Fly by Virginia Hamilton. This powerful tale\, rooted in an African American folktale\, has also influenced one of my favorite authors\, Toni Morrison\, in Song of Solomon. These works serve as the foundation for my exploration of resilience\, hope\, and freedom throughout African American history. \nThe Visual narrative I seek to convey traces a journey from Africa\, through the harrowing Middle Passage\, to enslavement\, and ultimately to liberation and resilience. My goal is to guide viewers through this story\, forging connections between the past and the present. \nTo bring this vision to life\, I am creating art that intertwines folktale\, history\, and culture\, incorporating reclaimed wood fencing and wooden substrates to craft wall-hung pieces and sculptural works. My techniques will include mixed-media approaches and immersive installations designed to engage viewers in a dynamic interpretation of this bittersweet folktale—extending its meaning beyond enslavement to celebrate resilience and identity by blending both the past and the present day. \nThrough this exhibition\, I hope to honor the enduring spirit of the African American experience and inspire reflection on the collective journey from oppression to empowerment. \n \nLavett Ballard is a Mixed Media Visual Artist\, Art historian\, Curator\, and Author. She holds a dual Bachelor’s in Studio Art and Art History with a minor in Museum Studies from Rutgers University\, and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. \nBallard’s art has been commissioned as a cover twice for Time Magazine first in March 2020 for their special multi-cover edition for the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage and in February 2023 for a cover and interior art for Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson’s essay about her book CASTE: Origins of our Discontent. In 2024 her art was featured in the NAACP Image Award winning Non-Fiction book The New Brownies’ Book: A Love Letter to Black Families by Karida L. Brown & Charly Palmer. \nHer work has been included in both literary & film productions and collected both nationally and internationally. Acquisitions include the Petrucci Family Foundation\, Abena Busia the Ghanian Ambassador to Brazil’s private Collection\, Grant & Tamia Hill collection\, the Francis M. Maguire Museum\, the African American Museum of Philadelphia\, the U.S. Art in the Embassies\, St Joseph’s University\, Syracuse Universities- Community Folk Arts Center\, & Jule Collins Smith Fine Art Museum at Auburn University Collections among many others. \nBallards portfolio can be viewed via www.LavettBeArt.com

SUMMARY:First Friday: Diving into Ocean Science
DESCRIPTION:This First Friday\, journey into the heart of our oceans as we explore the urgent challenges of water pollution\, microplastics\, and the incredible creatures that call the deep sea home. Plunge into the world of citizen science by testing out some of the instruments scientists use to monitor the health of our oceans\, and learn what we can all do to combat this global issue. \nHow well do you know the creatures of the deep? Test your knowledge by diving into an interactive digital guessing game\, “dissecting” a sculptural model of a shark from the collection\, and playing a very special game of Go Fish. \nCelebrate Citizen Science Month\nThis event is a part of Citizen Science Month! Explore how everyday people like YOU can make a real impact in environmental conservation. Learn about simple ways to contribute to ocean health and more through citizen science projects that help track pollution\, protect endangered species\, and much more. Our partners at Drexel University will be on hand to talk about what citizen science projects they’re currently working on and how you can help! \nAbout First Fridays\nSpark your curiosity while exploring the exhibits after hours! First Fridays bring together a myriad of activities covering everyday science\, historical oddities\, and everything in between. Grab your friends\, and kick off an evening of discovery\, surprise\, and a little nerdy fun. \nFirst Fridays at the Science History Institute are always free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Cassies Craft Coven and Cherry Street Pier Present: Eggy
DESCRIPTION:Show of art celebrating the many themes of Spring\, with a concentration on all things EGG\n\n\nThe Craft Coven is hosting our second annual EGGY art show in the Cherry Street Pier first floor gallery until April 30th 2025. Opening reception will take place on April 4th for First Friday. \nWhat is EGGY?The theme eggy can be interpreted in many ways. This show is meant to be a celebration of all that Spring holds for our community. There are images that we connect with this time of year: eggs\, rabbits\, flowers\, raindrops\, color palette of pastels\, greens and pinks just for example. For some\, Spring is a moment of rebirth\, renewal and new beginnings. For others it’s when we get together to eat egg salad and get free candy. Join us to see a selection of work addressing this broad theme. \nThis show spans two locations- the community work will be displayed at Cherry Street Pier in their first floor gallery space. Work by Craft Coven organizer Cassie Jones will be on display at the Craft Coven Underground stufio at 10 north 3rd street. Stay tuned for more details on our planned gallery tour from Cherry Street Pier\, around Old City\, and ending at The Underground studio.
