SUMMARY:Private Finance\, Public Power: A Free Talk on the History of Bank Supervision in America
DESCRIPTION:Banks may be private\, profit-driven institutions—but the public has always shaped the risks they take and paid the price when they fail.\nPrivate Finance\, Public Power explores this uneasy partnership over two centuries of American history\, from the wildcat banks of the early republic to the rise of federal deposit insurance and modern financial regulation. \nWharton professor Peter Conti-Brown and historian Sean Vanatta bring this story to life with colorful characters and surprising moments: rogues looting failed banks\, con artists posing as government examiners\, bribes paid in oyster dinners\, and reformers struggling to build order out of chaos. Through repeated crises and improvisation\, today’s complex banking oversight system emerged—flawed\, strained\, but largely functional. \nIn this talk\, Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown explores why this history matters for understanding the challenges facing U.S. banking today. \nThis event will be held in room 131/132 on the first floor of the Heim Center.

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge 2026
DESCRIPTION:The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is a four-day bioblitz where cities around the world record as much wildlife as possible. \nWildlife is measured by the total number of observations\, the number of species and the number of people making observations. CNC is also a great way to engage in community science and help document the biodiversity of our urban areas. \nThe event takes place using the iNaturalist website and app. Any observation photo\, geotagged from anywhere in the seven-county Philadelphia area (Philadelphia\, Delaware\, Montgomery and Bucks counties in Pennsylvania\, and Camden\, Gloucester and Burlington counties in New Jersey) and time-stamped during the four days of the event\, will count toward Philadelphia’s tally. Follow the Philly area’s progress on the CNC Philly iNaturalist page: City Nature Challenge 2026: Greater Philadelphia Area · iNaturalist \nExplore along with the Academy community through our home on iNaturalist\, the Academy Naturalists project group! \nVisit the CNC Philly home page for detailed instructions on how to participate. This annual event is organized by Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences. \nHow to Get Involved\nDownload iNaturalist – Create a free account in the app or at iNaturalist.org.\nMake Observations – Take photos of your findings anywhere in the Challenge Area between April 24 and April 27 and add to iNaturalist.\nJoin an Event or Explore on Your Own– Attend an in-person event led by naturalists and community scientists or photograph wild species in your neighborhood\, local park or backyard and upload them to iNaturalist.\nSpread the Word – Invite friends\, family\, classrooms\, and community groups to join the challenge.\nIdentify – Continue to upload and identify your photos on iNaturalist until the results are tallied on May 9. \n  \nWashington Square & Independence Square\nMonday\, April 27\, 2026\nNoon – 2 p.m. \nFor this special two-hour Monday outing\, we will meet at noon at the Washington Square entrance located at 7th and Walnut Streets\, or you can plug this location into your map (39.947820\, -75.152588). We will take our time around the park and over to Independence Square\, all the way to Carpenters’ Hall\, making observations via iNaturalist for the City Nature Challenge and exploring wild plants\, insects\, birds\, mammals\, fungi\, and other biodiversity. \nAccess Features \nSurface/Terrain: The park surface is composed of sidewalk\, brick pathways\, looser brick sections and grassy areas. The area is level with no elevations or slopes.\nPublic Bathroom: As there are no public bathrooms in the park\, it is recommended that you use the bathroom before arrival\, or use the bathroom at Independence Branch Free Library at 18 S 7th St.\nThe area is shady and offers ample benches.\nParking: Street parking is available.\nPublic Transportation: Bus Routes 21\, 42\nWeather: If it is actively raining\, we will postpone or cancel the event. Please check our Facebook event listing by 11 a.m. on event day to confirm.\nThe Conservatory at Laurel Hill Cemetery West\nSaturday\, May 9\, 2026\n10 a.m. – 1 p.m.\n225 Belmont Ave.\, Bala Cynwyd \nJoin Laurel Hill and ANS staff along with naturalists\, hobbyists and professionals as we learn how to identify species in the cemetery and arboretum. Bring the whole family for iNaturalist tutorials\, interactive games\, basic exploration of taxonomy and classification\, with snacks and conversation about the importance of biodiversity and environmental literacy. \nThe City Nature Challenge allows all to explore local ecosystems\, build observation skills and contribute to real scientific research. The Academy partners with community organizations and public agencies to encourage schools\, educators\, families and neighborhood groups to participate and make City Nature Challenge 2026 one of Philadelphia’s most inspiring and successful community science events yet. \nAs Philadelphia celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States\, the City Nature Challenge offers a powerful reminder that the story of this city is still being written — not only in its historic landmarks and neighborhoods\, but also in its rivers\, forests\, meadows and the countless species that call it home.

SUMMARY:Early Season Garden Care

Learn and discuss approaches to early-summer maintenance to help you stay ahead of challenges experienced in the throes of the growing season\, from simple techniques\, like managing the size of those oft-flopping tall perennials with a simple “Chelsea Chop\,” to more complex management strategies. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Sunday\, April 26\, 2026. \n About the Instructor: \nOlivia is a designer at GreenWeaver Landscapes\, a design-build company providing ecological landscape design\, construction\, and gardening to southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. SUMMARY:Brothers in Nature
DESCRIPTION:A 5-mile (2.5 mi out/ 2.5 mi back) nature walk for Black men to step away from noise\, reconnect\, and reset at Pennypack Park.\n\n\nBrothers in Nature is a 5-mile guided walk for Black men to step away from noise and reconnect with themselves in a grounded\, intentional environment. \nThis experience is about slowing down\, being present\, and creating space without pressure. There are no expectations to perform or share\, just an opportunity to walk\, breathe\, and exist in a calm\, supportive setting. \nWe’ll walk 2.5 miles to a midpoint\, pause briefly to reset\, then return 2.5 miles back. Conversations may happen naturally\, or you can simply enjoy the silence and the environment around you. \nThis is not a workout or a structured program. It’s a space to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with yourself. \nCome as you are.
