SUMMARY:Sound Bath Meditation: Spring Section
DESCRIPTION:With early access to Mt. Cuba’s tranquil setting\, immerse yourself in a restorative sound bath that gently harmonizes mind\, body\, and environment. While focusing on resonant tones of singing bowls\, also notice the garden’s living soundscape: birds calling\, leaves rustling\, and subtle natural rhythms that deepen a sense of calm and presence. \nResearch suggests that sound-based relaxation practices can support the body’s natural relaxation response\, helping to ease stress\, lower heart rate\, and quiet the mind. Time spent immersed in nature has similarly been shown to enhance mood\, reduce anxiety\, and foster a sense of connection and clarity. This experience thoughtfully weaves these two practices together\, offering a unique opportunity to unwind\, reset\, and deepen your connection with the natural world. Whether you’re seeking relaxation\, grounding\, or quiet renewal\, we invite you to this quiet dialogue between you\, intentional sound\, and the natural world. \nAfter class\, enjoy your own unique experience exploring our gardens and natural lands\, with garden admission included. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Two Sundays: 5/3 and 5/10 (Rain Date: Sunday\, May 17). \n About the Instructor: \nLiana Thompson completed the Vibration Sound Therapy Certified Practitioner training with the Vibrational Sound Association in 2019. Her passion is in helping others gently address stress and emotional trauma using the healing sounds of the Tibetan singing bowls. \nREGISTER NOW: \nGeneral Public \nIndividual+ & Dual+ Members \nSupporter\, Advocate & Conservator Members \n

SUMMARY:SWWAG Workshop: How to make Compost and FSA info
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make compost through a six-step process that begins with transforming recycled food waste into nutrient-rich soil. This demonstration highlights the current depletion of the city’s soil and shows how composting can restore its vitality—producing dark\, fertile earth capable of growing nutritious fruits and vegetables that support optimal health. \nThe Philadelphia Farm Service Agency(FSA) will also be tabling during the event to share USDA resources for urban growers. County Executive Director Nina Berryman will speak to participants about the FSA and answer any questions. She can discuss farm numbers\, youth loans\, and other financial safety net programs the FSA has to offer. \nLed by Nefertari Muhammad (beginner-level workshop).

SUMMARY:Girard College to Eastern State Penitentiary: A Tour of North Fairmount
DESCRIPTION:A walking tour through our historic neighborhood\n\n\nPhiladelphia is a city of neighborhoods and as we celebrate the US 250 come find out more about North Fairmount. \nIn the decades after the American Revolution\, Philadelphia was at the forefront of the creation of new institutions such as schools\, charities\, and reform societies to address social problems and promote civic virtue in the young nation. Many of these would ultimately find a home in Fairmount. On this walking tour from Girard College to Eastern State Penitentiary\, we will explore some of many institutions that are part of our neighborhood’s history. \nIn 1821\, when what is now Fairmount was farmland\, the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons urged the creation of the nation’s first penitentiary as a means of prison reform. Eastern State opened its doors in 1829. Girard College\, a boarding school for financially-disadvantaged children\, came soon after\, with construction beginning in 1833. Over time\, these two massive establishments were joined by a variety of institutions\, from the Women’s Medical College to the first public school in Philadelphia designed specifically for students with physical disabilities. \nOur tour will start at the Girard College gate. We will then walk through the neighborhood\, looking at sites of current and former institutions before ending at 22nd and Fairmount\, at the corner of Eastern State Penitentiary.

SUMMARY:May First Saturday Open House: Go Birds!
DESCRIPTION:Learn skills for bird identification at this First Saturday Open House!\n\n\nMAY FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE\nGo Birds!\nBirdwatching requires a combination of skills: a watchful eye\, a patient demeanor\, and a working knowledge on what local birds look like\, sound like\, and where you might best find them. At this First Saturday Open House\, be an ornithologist by practicing your bird watching skills in the Wagner’s Teaching Garden. Visitors can imitate bird calls and learn tips on how to accurately identify our flying friends. This is a perfect opportunity for folks to freshen up on their ornithology knowledge in preparation for Global Big Day\, an annual celebration of birding to be held on Saturday May 9th. \nJoin us at 1pm for a talk in our lecture hall on Philadelphia area birds and where to find them by expert birder Holger Pflicke. Since 2019\, Holger has been leading walks for BirdPhilly in every corner of Philadelphia\, and since 2025\, he has been hosting a walk series with the Free Library to promote the birding backpacks. Among many other bird-related things\, he is a Regional Coordinator for the 3rd Pennsylvania Bird Atlas (2024-29) and organizes the city’s breeding and mid-winter bird censuses. \nThis event is also a part of Remake Learning Days\, a national celebration of innovative experiences and opportunities for youth to develop their sense of creativity\, perseverance and curiosity. \nThe Wagner’s 100\,000+ natural history collection will also be available for self-guided exploration throughout the day. Browse ancient fossils\, glowing minerals\, and animals from around the globe. Visitors can wander at their own pace\, follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts\, or even fill in a coloring page with images from the Wagner’s library! \n \n\n\n\n \nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-ins welcome! Advance registration speeds your entry to the museum. Visitors who register in advance do not need to present a ticket at the desk—just your name! \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• The museum is located on the second floor of the building. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. SUMMARY:Designing Stunning Spaces with Native Plants: From Species to Space
DESCRIPTION:Take next steps with an exclusive opportunity to work alongside one of the landscape designers involved in Mt. Cuba’s Master Plan and Glade Entrance Garden. This immersive\, hands-on workshop explores the craft of landscape design and how to create unforgettable outdoor spaces in collaboration with the plants you love. Through quick\, creative exercises\, you’ll learn to analyze inspiring garden spaces and understand how your emotional response connects to plant selection\, spacing\, and seasonality. You’ll practice reading a site—its physical qualities\, its opportunities\, and the aesthetic or habitat goals you want it to achieve—and then translate those insights into measured drawings that reflect your design intentions. \nUsing Mt. Cuba’s gardens as your living classroom\, you’ll experiment with designing directly in the field at a designated test site\, applying principles of composition\, scale\, and plant-driven design. You’ll also gain experience drawing to scale and turning a conceptual sketch into a practical planting plan\, complete with sizes and quantities.\nBy the end of the workshop\, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how to shape meaningful\, plant-centered landscapes and the confidence to bring your own design ideas to life. Lunch is included. Class is held rain or shine. \nThis program takes place in-person at Mt. Cuba Center Saturday\, May 2\, 2026. \n🥬 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available \n About the Instructor: \nChloe Hawkins (BA\, Oberlin College 2003; MLA\, University of Virginia 2010) is a visual artist and the Founder and Director of Cohort\, a landscape architecture practice committed to deepening the intertwined relationships between people\, plants and place.
