SUMMARY:Doors Are Closing! Philly's Elevated Trains and Trolleys
DESCRIPTION:Love exploring subway history? Then this tour is for you.\n\n\nTheme: WHAT IS\, WAS\, and NEVER WAS. \nMeet inside 30th Street Station at the angel statue on the east side of the main hall. Bathrooms are nearby. Event lasts roughly 2 hours. Begins at 30th Street Amtrak Station\, ends at 69th Street Terminal. \nLove exploring subway history? Then this tour is for you. \nAfter meeting at the angel statue\, we will walk outside the station to understand the reason for submerging the original elevated structure back in the 1950s. After riding the underground trolley eastbound\, we see where the El originally circled City Hall. Continuing on the Market-Frankford Subway/El east\, we emerge from the subway at Spring Garden Station and learn about the elevated line that went directly to Penn’s Landing 100 years ago. Returning west\, we end at the enormous\, multi-modal 69th Street Terminal filled with subways\, trolleys\, buses\, and interurbans. \nGuide Jerry Silverman was born to give this tour. He was the very first rider ever on PATCO as a teenager and later the chair of the SEPTA Citizen Advisory Committee. \n***PLEASE NOTE*** You will need to purchase one SEPTA fare during the tour. NO BATHROOMS EN ROUTE. \nHidden City Members\, use your promo codes for discounts on tickets! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? Contact Hidden City project coordinator Alison Zeidman at azeidman@hiddencityphila.org.

SUMMARY:Free art show-Animal House- works by Elizabeth Beecher
DESCRIPTION:Beecher’s world has been gloriously encircled by the quirkiness and humor found by way of fur and feathered animals. Her art reflect the embrace of joyfulness found in our backyard companions and the boost that a colorful world provides us. Clearly a whimsical\, unique artist\, she’s inspired by the animals in her own life\, as well as the those cherished in others’. Such attention is made on bringing them to new form by way of the mixed media process through bright and bold expressions. Beecher acknowledges her muses in having unique personalities worthy of sharing and persevering for us all\, and that is further enhanced by her method of collaging pattern and materials into the compositions.\nDo not miss the opportunity to view these wonderful works in person. Stop in the gallery 5 days a week to view. All works are also available for sale online.

Wander at your own pace or follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts. You can also pick up pencils and paper to draw from the specimens on display. \nIn addition to exploring on your own\, we’re offering guided tours at 1 and 2:30 pm. Learn about the founding and purpose of the Wagner and gain insight into our National Landmark building\, the museum’s collections and the arrangement of the historic displays. The tour will highlight some of the museum’s most interesting specimens and show how their stories reflect social and intellectual histories of the 19th and 20th centuries\, including changing ideas about evolution\, the environment and the natural world. \nFor all visitors\, we’ll have information about our new fall program schedule\, including field trips\, hands-on science lessons\, evening courses\, public talks and special events! \nThis Open House is being held in collaboration with Founder’s Hall at Girard College\, a free educational institution founded in 1831 as a school for orphaned boys. Founder Stephen Girard inspired William Wagner to start his own free institution and you can learn more about the connections between these two National Historic Landmarks by touring both during our paired Open Houses. Founder’s Hall\, the monumental Greek Revival main building on the campus\, will be open for tours and self-guided exploration from 10 am to 2 pm. It is located on Girard Avenue\, west of 20th Street\, only one mile from the Wagner. Visit them in the morning and then head over to the Wagner to see how Girard’s philanthropic bequest became a model for our institution and others across the country. \nSchedule: \nNoon – 4 pm: Museum open \n1 & 2:30 pm: Guided tours – please sign up at the registration desk \nAdmission is free to everyone and donations are welcome to support our mission. \n\n\n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n\nWalk-ins are welcome! Advance registration speeds your entry to the museum. Visitors who register in advance do not need to present their registration or confirmation email at the desk—just your name!\nThere is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light.\nThe museum is located on the second floor of the building. There are 5 steps at the entryway and a flight of stairs to access the museum. It is not wheelchair accessible.\nTo protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum. Open containers of food and drink are not permitted in the building.\nThe Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free. There is 2-hour free parking on Bouvier Street and on many blocks near the Wagner and metered parking on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The nearest parking garage is at the Liacouras Center on 15th Street and Montgomery Avenue.\n\n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is FREE—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you are a group leader and wish to bring a group of 10 or more to the program\, please email our museum educator\, TobeyC@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11.

Routes offered from 21 to 101 miles through Philadelphia\, Montgomery\, and Chester Counties. The event\, organized by the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia (BCP)\, will be held on Sunday\, September 7\, 2025. \nThe fully supported ride starts and finishes at AIM Academy (1200 River Road\, Conshohocken)\, located directly on the Schuylkill River Trail across from the SEPTA Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail Miquon Station. \nRegistration begins at 6am. Rolloffs commence at 7am or slightly later at the choice of the riders. \nEvent Highlights\n• Seven routes to choose from: three mostly flat\, paved trail routes for casual riders; four longer\, more challenging road routes for experienced cyclists.\n• Rest stops at AIM Academy\, Lloyd Hall (No. 1 Boathouse Row)\, the Phoenixville YMCA\, and Ridge Fire Company in Spring City\, Chester County.\n• Coffee\, bagels\, and fresh fruit at the start; fresh fruit and homemade baked goods at all rest stops; a celebratory pizza party at the finish.\n• On-course support: SAG drivers patrolling the routes and marshals stationed at key locations.\n• Scenic highlights include:\n• Main Street Manayunk\, West Laurel Hill Cemetery and Arboretum\, MLK Drive\, Fairmount Park mansions\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and six Schuylkill River crossings—including the Manayunk Viaduct and Strawberry Mansion Bridge.\n• Some of the most picturesque stretches of the Schuylkill River between Philadelphia and Phoenixville.\n• Valley Forge National Historical Park\, four historic covered bridges\, and Chester County’s scenic horse country with rolling hills above Phoenixville. \nRain or shine. Helmets are required. \nAbout the Event\nThe Scenic Schuylkill Century Recreational Bicycle Ride has been a Philadelphia cycling tradition for more than 25 years. This unique bicycle ride is organized by volunteers\, not by a for profit company.
