SUMMARY:Free art show-Absurd Spectaculars
DESCRIPTION:The artists in this wide embrace seek to manifest a one-of-a-kind fantastical world\, percolating in metaphors by means of commingling artistic disciplines and subjects. These detractors of traditional norms and expectations wrote their own rules in an unapologetic way amidst a culture enamored with aesthetics. Because the roots of such visionaries is often steeped in the underground culture there is always a core of rebellion and being provocative shining thorough. The obscure messages are oft based on dreams and the unconscious\, on renegade concepts and provocative symbolism. At times imagery can be poking fun at the conventional matters of any kind\, using humor and sarcasm as its strongest device. Compositions are filled with abstract imagery and dreamy cartoon characters painted and drawn with impressive technical ability that candidly blurs the line between low and high art. We hope you will come join us in this journey of intrigue.\nStop in the gallery 5 days a week to view and add to your collection. All works are also available for sale online through our site www.blackmothgallery.com. You will not want to miss out on experiencing these one of a kind works in person. \nArtists Featured Work:\nWes Benscoter\nMichael Camarra\nWilly Cutlip\nCzr-Prz\nHengone\nGreg Hergert\nBriana Hertzog\nHanna Jaeun\nJoKa\nJesso Lange\nGrelin Machin\nNoseGo\nBruce Parker\nJohn Rego\nDebbie Rich\nPaul Vavarone\nAlyssa Young

SUMMARY:Summer Creative Practice Series
DESCRIPTION:Join coven organizer Cassie Jones in an open studio session of discussion and crafty play. Different mediums each day\, & enjoy a free beer!\n\n\nCome by the coven studio at 10 North Third Street and join in on whatever craft I’ve got planned for the group. Throwback style to hosting events in my basement for years\, I get to choose the craft\, and you just show up! \nThis series will serve as a creative exploration project both for me\, and for anyone that chooses to come to multiple sessions. People often ask me how I’ve built up a collection of so many different skillsets in the craft and art world- this is how. I’ll be inviting you all into my studio to see how I work from one project to the next\, and how each of them are treated as a way to hone my artistic mind and keep the motivations flowing in a productive direction. \nEach session will begin with a circle discussion of what we’ve been processing in our art lately\, and where we’d like things to go next. We’ll trade feedback with anyone looking for insight on their work\, and each person will have an alotted time to speak -or not speak- After the discussion portion of our workshop I’ll introduce the skill for the day\, something different for each group. Some of the projects that are on the list for this summer are: \n-Puppet Building \n-Stop Animation \n-Gelli Printing \n-Cyanotypes \n-Accessory Design \nWe’ll make some things together and work open studio style. Feel free to bring your own projects and you have access to the tools on hand. Message if you’re looking for something specific like a sewing machine etc. \nBYO snacks\, beverages\, party favors etc. I’ll have beers available\, filtered water and a handful of tea varieties. \nAbout the Location: \nThe coven studio is located in the heart of Olde City in a below ground storefront. There are 10 steps down to get into the space\, and our ceilings are not very high. Anyone over 6’4″ will have watch their head until they have a seat. Any more questions about the space or accessibility-please reach out!

SUMMARY:A Risograph Collage + Zine Making Workshop with Pet Riso
DESCRIPTION:During this zine and collage workshop\, participants will be able to re-contextualize the work in Friend of a Friend of a Friend exhibition\n\n\nDuring this zine and collage workshop\, participants will be able to recontextualize the work in Friend of a Friend of a Friend in their own compositions. By using test prints from the show and other collage material provided by Pet Riso\, attendees will learn how to make one-page zines and other collage techniques.\n \nAbout the Exhibition \nWhat do you visualize when you imagine an artist making their work? The cliché we often see in media is an artist working alone in their studio\, struggling over an easel. But art is rarely made in isolation. Collaboration is a defining characteristic of the Philadelphia cultural ecosystem\, and one that’s especially defined within the Printmaking community. Printmaking\, by nature\, invites shared space\, shared tools\, and shared knowledge. Friend of a Friend of a Friend explores the friendship between Ben Kraemer and Claire Cooke\, est. 2017 at Tyler School of Art\, and how their connection\, through their joint practice at Pet Riso Studio and beyond\, reflects a broader culture of interdependence. Here\, friendship isn’t just a social bond\, it’s a defining characteristic of creating form. \n \nAbout the Artists \nBen Kraemer is an artist and printmaker living and working in Philadelphia. His artistic practice has largely focused on the creation of artists’ books\, zines\, and other printed matter. His body of work investigates the role of memory in the formation of identity and has drawn inspiration and context from his multi-racial background. This has culminated in drawings\, prints and books containing family photographs\, imagery from film and television\, and appropriated cultural icons. \nHe holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Tyler School of Art and since 2022 has been running the collaborative printshop Pet Riso Studio with Claire Cooke. \nClaire Cooke works primarily through photographic printmaking processes\, with her most recent focus being risography. With degrees in both Printmaking and Art History\, Claire references the historical aspect of printmaking\, i.e. mass-production\, merchandising\, and commercial engagement\, and turns it around on itself by creating absurd\, humorous\, and satirical printed matter. Claire sources her imagery from content posted on social media platforms\, stock photos\, and even photos living in her own camera roll\, and gives them a life outside of the digital landscape. This gives us a chance to appreciate the technicality of the mediums she works in and her ability to create visually-interesting pieces\, while also enjoying the absurdity of the pieces themselves. It allows us to contemplate the consumption of mass-media without feeling overwhelmed by it all\, instead giving us a silly reminder that we can take something seen as superficial and make it something to behold! \n \nAbout DVAA \nDVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia.
