SUMMARY:Concrete
DESCRIPTION:Professor Anna Tsing launches the Wolf Humanities Center’s 2024-2025 Forum on Keywords with a talk exploring the “concreteness of concrete.”\n\n\nWolf Humanities Center • University of Pennsylvania \n2024–2025 FORUM ON KEYWORDS \nDR. S.T. LEE DISTINGUISHED LECTURE IN THE HUMANITIES \nConcrete\nConcrete is a material—and an adjective pointing to the physical existence of things. To be concrete is to have form in the material world. In this talk\, renowned anthropologist Anna Tsing considers the material form of concrete as a building material\, that is\, the concreteness of concrete. Concrete repels water\, and in the city of Sorong\, Indonesia\, where her current research has taken her\, it calls forth floods\, distributing mud. The concreteness of concrete is foundational to our current condition\, stuck in the infrastructural lock-in of this dangerous time\, the Anthropocene. \nCosponsored by Penn’s Department of Anthropology and EnviroLab. \nAnna Tsing teaches anthropology at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and at Aarhus University\, Denmark. Her most recent book (with Jennifer Deger\, Alder Keleman Saxena\, and Feifei Zhou) is Field Guide to the Patchy Anthropocene: The New Nature (Stanford University Press\, 2024). This same team curated the mammoth digital project Feral Atlas: The More-than-Human Anthropocene (www.feralatlas.org). Tsing is co-director of the Center for Southeast Asian Coastal Interactions (SEACoast) at UC Santa Cruz; she leads the center project\, “Fragmented Porosity\,” which considers changing histories\, livelihoods\, and ecologies of the land-water interface. \nMore information: https://wolfhumanities.upenn.edu/events/tsing \n––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. \nThe Wolf Humanities Center values inclusivity and we aim to create a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds. Please feel free to note any accessibility needs or concerns in your registration\, or connect with us by email or phone (215.573.8280).

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Finding the Cosmic Puzzle's Missing Pieces
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Finding the Cosmic Puzzle’s Missing Pieces\,” a look at how the fields of astronomy and subatomic physics are working in tandem to shed light on the darkest parts of the universe\, with Mark Trodden\, professor of physics\, co-director of the Center for Particle Cosmology\, and associate dean for the natural sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. \nFor most of the last century\, physicists pushed our understanding of the microscopic world down to ever-smaller sizes\, splitting the atom to reveal its inner workings and enable astonishing new discoveries\, including\, most recently\, the Higgs particle. \nAt the same time\, other scientists—astronomers—have continued to look to the skies for “the big picture” of the universe\, peering far beyond our galaxy and looking back to the beginning of time. They have discovered that the universe contains the mysterious entities of dark matter and dark energy\, and that the Big Bang may have arisen through cosmic inflation\, a dramatic expansion of space about which we’ve gained crucial new knowledge just in recent years. \nLearn how modern cosmology is weaving together these seemingly distinct strands of knowledge\, turning our telescopes into microscopes and allowing us to read the hitherto unknown dark side of the universe\, in a fascinating talk being given at the Black Squirrel Club in Philadelphia’s Fishtown. \nThe speaker\, theoretical physicist Mark Trodden\, conducts research that has contributed to a broad range of topics in particle physics\, gravity and cosmology. He focuses on some of the most pressing problems in fundamental physics found at the interfaces between these fields. His talk promises to be mind-blowing\, and it will make you see the universe in entirely new ways. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Guests are welcome to arrive any time after 5:30. Talk starts at 6:30.) \nImage: From a 2012 dark matter map by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey.

SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Powerhouse Native Plants for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Uncover powerhouse native plants worthy of wildlife’s 5-star review!\n\n\nWhether they’re sustaining a bird’s stamina for winter migration\, providing ample nectar for hungry bees and butterflies\, or serving as a host plant for hundreds of juicy caterpillars to fuel the ecosystem food web\, these native plants pack a punch in their ecological services. \nCollaborate with habitat advocate peers on how to put the compiled field research trials into compassionate action\, right in your backyard! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our fall 2024 Habitat Advocate Certification program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenter\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer\, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education\, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification\, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. \nElyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs\, infusing educational opportunities during the design\, installation\, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. \n \nAbout this Class\nNote\, you must have taken the prerequisite “Habitat Advocate: Building Biodiversity in our Community” prior to taking this course. Learn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here. \nAttendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. \n \nRefund/Cancellation Policies\nRefund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket\, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. \nCancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. If the Conservancy reschedules the event\, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event\, attendees will be notified via email when possible and refunded. \n \nThank you to our host Tec Centro and partners Waxwing EcoWorks Co. and the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA)!\n \nPhoto: Elyse Jurgen

On Friday\, September 20th\, 2024\, from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM\, Zara Chowdhary and Sham-e-Ali Nayeem will be in conversation about Chowdhary’s recently published book\, The Lucky ones\, a moving memoir by a survivor of anti-Muslim violence in contemporary India that delicately weaves political and family histories in a tribute to her country’s unique Islamic heritage. \nTHE LUCKY ONES entwines lost histories across a subcontinent\, examines forgotten myths\, prods at family’s secrets\, and gazes unflinchingly back at a country rushing to move past the biggest pogrom in its modern history. With stunning clarity\, we witness the violence through Zara’s teenage eyes\, and how she and her family struggle through while locked down in their home for months. Zara also weaves in her present-day perspective as she uncovers what really happened across Gujarat in those horrific weeks and tells the stories of victims—stories that have become legendary among Indian Muslims even as they’ve been suppressed by Hindu nationalist political forces. With Modi having won re-election and the “world’s largest democracy” hurtling toward cacophonous Hindu nationalism\, these stories need to be heard. \nZara Chowdhary is a writer and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. She has an MFA in creative writing and environment from Iowa State University and a master’s in writing for performance from the University of Leeds. She has previously written for documentary television\, advertising\, and film. She lives in Madison\, Wisconsin with her partner\, child\, and two cats. \nSham-e-Ali Nayeem is an interdisciplinary artist\, poet\, sound practitioner and recovering social justice lawyer with Hyderabadi (Deccan) Muslim roots. She is the author of the poetry collection\, City of Pearls (Upset Press\, 2019) and has released two musical albums; City of Pearls (2019) and Moti Ka Sheher (2023) featuring self composed musical interpretations from her book. Sham-e-Ali is the recipient of the 2022 Leeway Transformation Award\, the 2016 Loft Literary Center Spoken Word Immersion Fellowship\, and the 1997 echoing green fellowship.

SUMMARY:Producers Forum: DeeDee Halleck
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the screening of “Bitter Cane” followed by a post screening discussion with DeeDee Halleck.\n\n\nAn award-winning documentary about the colonial exploitation of the Haitian people\, Bitter Cane was filmed secretly by a collective of Haitian and American filmmakers—many part of the Mouvement Haitien de Libération\, an underground revolutionary organization—during the dictatorship of Jean-Claude (“Baby Doc”) Duvalier. The film’s deep insights into the exploitation and foreign domination of the Haitian people remain all too relevant today. \n \nAfter BITTER CANE was filmed in Haiti – clandestinely during the regime of Jean-Claude Duvalier – the director was identified as “Jacques Arcelin.” That was a fictitious name used to protect the identify of the filmmakers. Now we can finally reveal their real names. The film was co-directed by Haitian activist Ben Dupuy and his American comrade Kim Ives. They were part of a collective of Haitian and American filmmakers called Haiti Film. \n \nDeeDee Halleck began making films in the 1960s. Her film\, The Mural on Our Street was nominated for an Academy Award in 1965\, and she went on to work with artists Shirley Clarke\, Richard Serra\, Nancy Holt\, Robert Frank\, Jean Dupuy\, and others. She was president of American Independent Video and Film Makers (AIVF) 1977-1982\, organizing a campaign to create funding and space for independent producers on public television. Since 1974 she has been the film and video chronicler of the Bread and Puppet theater. In 1982-4 she was raised funds from The Corporation on Public Television to make a film on Haiti\, working as a member of Haiti Films\, along with Kim Ives\, Kyle Kibbe and Pennee Bender. The film went on to win prizes at TIFF (Toronto) and Cannes and was shown clandestinely in Haiti. \n \nDeeDee Halleck will be there in-person for the post screening discussion.
