SUMMARY:Who Made the Cornbread? : A Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Create cyanotype prints from family recipes in this free workshop blending food\, art & memory. Cornbread snack included!\n\n\nWorking with individual narratives and collective memory\, this session will invite participants to explore family histories through culinary traditions and alternative photography. During this cyanotype workshop\, led by visual artists Qiaira Riley and Yannick Lowery\, participants will utilize personal and archival cornbread recipes as inspiration for blue prints. A cornbread inspired snack will also be served as a part of the workshop * \n \nThis workshop is part of a broader community series offered through the collaboration between Ourchive and visual artist Levester Williams and supported by Monument Lab. It aims to deeply engage the Germantown neighborhood around the powerful and resonant story of the late Hercules Posey\, George Washington’s enslaved cook who courageously escaped. Germantown\, known both for its painful legacy of slavery and its landmark role in America’s first recorded anti-slavery protest\, offers a potent space for exploring themes of historical preservation\, social justice\, and creative resistance. \n \nAt the heart of these events is the belief that individual narratives are powerful tools in safeguarding historical truth\, especially during a time when censorship and revisionist pressures threaten collective memory. Participants will not only create personal artifacts\, but also contribute to a collective effort to creatively preserve and honor untold stories that shape our communities. \n \nFree and open to all. Light refreshments provided. \nSpots are limited—please register in advance to reserve your place. \n \n*By attending this event\, I consent to OHCC/6S\, Monument Lab\, and Ourchive photographing or filming me and my guests\, and I authorize them to use these images for any lawful purpose\, including publicity and digital or print media\, with or without my name.

SUMMARY:Crayfish Dinner Party!
DESCRIPTION:Like discovering new cultural cuisine? Looking for a fun night out with friends? Enjoy a summer evening at the American Swedish Historical Museum to indulge in a Swedish specialty: crayfish! \nAt one time the lakes of central Sweden were filled with crayfish\, but overfishing decimated their population. Eventually\, the government prohibited the catching of crayfish except for a short time in late summer. After going the whole summer without the delicacy\, the return of crayfish to the dinner table in August became a great cause for celebration\, a tradition that has continued through today. \nPlease join us on the Museum’s stunning terrace overlooking FDR Park for a crayfish dinner on Friday\, August 8th to experience our take on the Swedish crayfish tradition! Enjoy a buffet of crayfish and Swedish meatballs\, alongside potatoes\, cheese pie\, cucumber and beet salads\, desserts\, and a glass of aquavit\, all outside under our tent decorated with paper lanterns\, festive lights\, and all things crayfish! \n$60 for ASHM members and $70 for non-members. Register online by August 4th.\nhttps://www.americanswedish.org/events/crayfish-party-5

SUMMARY:Ghost Signs of Washington Sq West
DESCRIPTION:Tour a range of ghost signs from Washington Square West through Center City\, exploring the commercial history behind them.\n\n\nJoin Hidden City as we tour a range of ghost signs from Washington Square West through Center City. We’ll discuss the history of the businesses and buildings behind the faded ads\, exploring signage as a window to the neighborhoods’ commercial past: Piano Row on Chestnut Street\, a concentration of print and publishing houses\, Horn & Hardart Automat\, and so much more. \n“Ghost Signs” are faded and often forgotten business and advertisement signs\, usually found on the front or sides of buildings. The effects of decades of weather\, neglect\, and cover-up attempts have diminished their eye-catching glow\, but they reveal generations of a building’s history and fascinating stories of our city. \nMeet at the northwest corner of St James St & West Washington Square. \nTour guide Jordan Keiffer has been documenting Philadelphia’s ghost signs on the Instagram page @phillyghostsigns since 2019. His goal is to connect people to the forgotten stories of these faded signs through historic narratives and supplemental images. His work was featured in a special exhibition on ghost signs at the Neon Museum of Philadelphia in 2021. A native of Montgomery County\, PA\, Keiffer is a proud Temple University alum. He enjoys long runs and bike rides through the city that allow him to periodically check in on ghost signs. \nIf you are a Hidden City Member\, don’t forget to use your promo code for a member discount! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums?
