SUMMARY:Weitzman Fine Art Lecture Series: BlackMass Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist lecture and presentation with BlackMass\, a publishing collective founded by Yusuf Hassan.\n\n\nThe Weitzman Department of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and the Institute of Contemporary Art are pleased to present an artist lecture and presentation with BlackMass\, a publishing collective founded by Yusuf Hassan\, which engages with printed matter as a means of Black artistic\, emotional and cultural expression. \nThis free public lecture is part of a series that gathers distinguished artists\, activists\, writers\, and disruptors whose work engages with the social and cultural themes of our time. This season of lectures presents a selection of artists whose work is connected to or featured in ICA’s current exhibitions. \n\nCaptioning will be available for this program via Zoom. \nICA is committed to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors. For more notes on accessibility including accessible parking nearby visit our Accessibility landing page. If you require any accessibility accommodations or have any questions about the program\, please contact Brittany Clottey (bclottey@ica.upenn.edu). \n \nAbout the collective\nFounded by Yusuf Hassan in 2019\, BlackMass Publishing is a New York-based collective and independent press. At once a structure of coherent units and a collection of disjointed parts\, BlackMass invokes an aggregate of Blackness\, of matter in resistance. Combining archival photographs and found print material with poetry and jazz music\, BlackMass grapples with the blurred lines and idiosyncrasies which make up the collective improvisation of African diasporic culture. \nBlackMass have publications included in the permanent book collections of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture\, New York\, RAW Material Company\, Dakar\, Center for Book Arts\, New York\, The Thomas J. Watson Library\, New York\, The Whitney Museum Library\, New York\, The Houghton Library\, Cambridge\, The Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center\, New York\, The New York Public Library\, and The Evergreen State College\, Washington. \n \nAbout the series\nThe Institute of Contemporary Art and the Weitzman Department of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania are pleased to present a series of free public lectures and artist presentations that connect a group of distinguished artists\, writers\, activists\, and disruptors to the Philadelphia public. \nIn their varied approaches and techniques\, these individuals speak to ICA’s ethos of artistic experimentation and practice that engages with the social and cultural themes of our time. As artists\, writers\, and cultural producers\, their artwork and criticism expand across themes of popular culture\, queer life\, kinship & community\, and de/construction through the utilization of sculpture\, performance\, sound\, collage\, installation\, and more. \nIn this lecture series\, we invite you all to engage in conversation with our participants and become a part of an active dialogue that explores the stake of contemporary art in our society and culture. \n \nSupport\nProgramming at ICA is made possible in part by the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts and the Lise Spiegel Wilks and Jeffrey Wilks Family Foundation. Public and Student Engagement at ICA is supported by the Bernstein Public Engagement Fund\, Suzanne Weiss Doft & Jacob W. Doft\, Stacey & Robert Goergen Jr.\, Hilarie L. & Mitchell Morgan\, the Nash Family Foundation\, Joline & David Stemerman\, and by Dana McDonald Strong & Mark W. Strong. \nThe Master of Fine Arts program at Penn is focused on the professional development of visual artists. Through workshops\, seminar courses\, international residency opportunities and interactions with curators\, writers and artists\, the program provides an open intellectual framework to foster independent methods of artistic research.

SUMMARY:Black Box Presents: Sunset Seduction
DESCRIPTION:South Philly Autonomous Cinema is pleased to present Sunset Seduction by Charles de Agustin! Screening followed by discussion!\n\n\nBlack Box Presents: Sunset Seduction\nIn Partnership with South Philly Autonomous Cinema\n \n3/6 FREE Doors at 7:30pm\nSouth Philly Autonomous Cinema is pleased to present\, in collaboration with Vox Populi’s Black Box Presents Program\, Sunset Seduction by Charles de Agustin on Thursday\, March 6\, 2025. Doors at 7:30pm\, screening at 8pm\, followed by an extended audience discussion with the artist and organizers. \nSunset Seduction is an evolving project centered on a 45-minute film alongside site-specific contracts and discussions\, starring a liberal philanthropist who yearns for his next fling with radical politics. Made as the Palestine solidarity movement escalated in 2024\, the film unfolds in essayistic fragments considering ideas of freedom\, violence\, and the seductive capture of revolutionary ideology.  \nNonprofit organizations—even those driven by equity\, decolonization\, abolition—are tied to an unsustainable infrastructure that consistently creeps toward establishment liberalism. Sunset Seduction revitalizes the spirit of INCITE’s The Revolution Will Not Be Funded (2007); emphasizes collective grassroots action in the popular imagination\, which may include siphoning and subverting philanthropic resources\, far beyond electoral politics and do-gooder grantmaking; and works toward a “more radical form of complicity” (Moten & Harney). \nWith influence from Faye R. Gleisser’s notion of “risk work” and histories of the contract as artistic intervention\, a scene in the film explains that the artist will work with each exhibiting institution’s staff to enact a “genuine and disruptive act of treason against the socioeconomic interests of the ruling class” in order for the work to be presented\, intending to materialize the particular responsibilities of cultural workers in the global north. \nCharles de Agustin is an artist based in Brooklyn who primarily makes films. Rooted in essay and diary cinema alongside an expanded practice in writing and performance\, his work considers ideas around critique\, access\, intimacy\, and capture\, often in the context of cultural institutions. Solo and group presentations 2021-25 include Alternative Film/Video (Belgrade)\, Ann Arbor Film Festival (Michigan)\, Arts + Literature Laboratory (Madison)\, Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago)\, Kassel Dokfest (Germany)\, Maysles Documentary Center (New York)\, Revolutions per Minute Festival (Boston)\, Saigon Experimental Film Festival (Vietnam)\, South London Gallery (England)\, Spectacle (Brooklyn)\, XINEMA (Vancouver)\, among others. de Agustin has a BFA from Rutgers University and an MFA from the University of Oxford. He has received grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, NYSCA\, Brooklyn Arts Council\, and the Elephant Trust. His artistic practice is mutually informed by experiences as an organizer\, educator\, and programmer. \n \nSouth Philly Autonomous Cinema is a collectively-run organization screening leftist\, queer\, and rare films in South Philadelphia. \n \nAbout Black Box Presents \nMade possible by the William Penn Foundation\, Black Box Presents is a yearlong series transforming our Black Box Performance Theater into a platform for 12 community arts organizations\, each curating their own monthly event. This initiative amplifies experimental music\, dance\, film\, and spoken word while ensuring free\, accessible programming that strengthens Philadelphia’s creative networks. \nAbout William Penn FoundationThe William Penn Foundation\, founded in 1945 by Otto and Phoebe Haas\, is committed to expanding access to resources and opportunities that promote a more vital and just city and region for all. We do this through funding programs in the Philadelphia region in arts and culture\, children and families\, democracy and civic initiatives\, environment and public space\, and workforce training and services. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Under the Influence"\, Curated by Ginger Rudolph
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of a 2-person exhibition\, featuring the work of Eustace Mamba and Alain Jean-Baptiste.\n\n\nParadigm Gallery + Studio is pleased to present Under the Influence\, a two-person exhibition curated by writer and curator Ginger Rudolph. Rudolph believes that art has the power to document\, process\, and transform personal experiences\, which she illustrates through the work of fine artist Eustace Mamba and painter Alain Jean-Baptiste. Rudolph encourages these artists to explore deeply personal forces–family memories\, environmental traumas\, career triumphs– that have shaped their creative paths to fashion a narrative championing cultural heritage\, identity\, and self-discovery. \nEustace Mamba approaches his work as a cross-section of history\, sociology\, and psychology interwoven into eclectic collaged portraits\, cityscapes\, and reconstructed ephemera. His multidisciplinary background in photography\, graphic design\, and painting gives him the confidence to experiment with different materials and processes to assemble an expansive configuration of contemporary Black life. \nAlain Jean-Baptiste dives deep into his memory\, happily growing up in Haiti until everything changed when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed his family’s home and immobilized the country’s economic growth. \nPlease email info@paradigm-gallery.com if you wish to receive the digital collector preview list for the above exhibition. You may also submit your request HERE. \nThe reception is free and open to all. All artwork will be available to collect during the opening. Please email info@paradigm-gallery for any inquiries prior to the reception. \nAlso on display: \nKatherine Fraser: The Female Gaze \nRead the press release here \nKay Seohyung Lee’s “Dark”: \nArtwork by Danielle SeeWalker \nRead the press release here \nand many more artists!

SUMMARY:Indigenous Phytotherapy | The Plants That Heal: Hapé Circle
DESCRIPTION:For indigenous people\, Hapé (pronounced “ha-peh”) has a powerful spirit of healing and protection against evils. Hapé is a cleansing snuff that is seen to open countless portals\, enabling a person to reach different dimensions in the spiritual world. \nThis medicinal tobacco helps to focus and sharpen the mind. Hapé is served to clear a person of distracting thoughts and bad energies in preparation for intention setting. It clears the sinuses of mucus and bacteria to combat colds & respiratory ailments. It provides a calming\, grounding effect on the emotional and spiritual body that lasts much longer than the initial application and sensation. \nHapé is a mixture of sun-dried Mói tobacco\, as well as ashes of tree bark which is presented in the form of a powder. It is widely used in rituals & ceremonies in indigenous cultures as a spiritual and physical cure of illnesses. Tobacco is considered a sacred plant by indigenous peoples\, as a plant of power and a strong healing vibration. \nAll classes and gatherings in the Indigenous Phytotherapy series are donation-based.
