SUMMARY:THE AZAR LAWRENCE EXPERIENCE
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents a tribute to the late jazz icon Pharoah Sanders featuring the renowned saxophonist Azar Lawrence\, at Solar Myth on March 24. \nSaxophone titan Pharoah Sanders was one of the last icons of his generation when he passed in the fall of 2022. He was handpicked by John Coltrane to play on Trane’s late-career masterpieces\, and thereafter released a string of expansive recordings under his own name for the Impulse! label\, which have been cited as a pivotal influence by everyone from Prince to Marvin Gaye to Iggy Pop. Over a career that spanned fifty years\, Pharaoh recorded some of the most revered — and controversial — albums in jazz history\, embracing a wild\, anarchic sound that would reverberate across genres for decades to come. Often by his side in his later years was fellow saxophonist Azar Lawrence. A master in his own right\, Lawrence is a living link to the music’s history\, having played with giants including Miles Davis\, McCoy Tyner\, Elvin Jones\, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. He’ll pay tribute to Sanders’ powerful and spiritual music with this special performance.

Please email kitchen@freelibrary.org for more information. \n \nMore about the event: \nThe Cherry Blossom Festival is a beloved annual Philadelphia tradition\, when we welcome the arrival of spring by celebrating beautiful and fragrant trees coming into flower. This year\, we are pleased to partner with the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia to bring you a hands-on Japanese confectionary workshop. \nWagashi are traditional sweets served as part of a Japanese tea ceremony . Made with rice flour and filled with ingredients such as red bean paste\, Wagashi are naturally vegan and gluten-free. (If you have dietary restrictions or other questions\, please email us at kitchen@freelibrary.org) These exquisite delicacies range in complexity\, from simple forms to elaborate shapes\, colors\, and textures\, depending on the skill of the wagashi-maker. The workshop will be led by Sachiko Houck\, a long time tea practitioner in the Philadelphia area. \n \nAbout the presenters: \nSachiko Houck was born in Fukuoka\, Japan and is a self-taught wagashi artist out of necessity. As a long time practitioner of Chado\, the Japanese Way of Tea\, there was no place locally to purchase the sweets so necessary to the enjoyment of matcha tea\, so Sachiko began experimenting with making her own. Since then\, making and sharing wagashi with others has become her passion. She is a nurse practitioner by training and lives in Lancaster county with her husband\, Brian. \n \nEmi Houck\, daughter of Sachiko Houck\, has always enjoyed the process of creating (and eating!) aesthetically pleasing sweets. She has learned the ropes of preparing wagashi from her mother and now makes and sells them to matcha-focused tea houses in New Jersey and New York City. When not rolling up her sleeves making wagashi\, she is teaching ESL to her high school students in Philadelphia. Find her wagashi on Instagram! @marumame.wagashi \n \nTerry Yoshida Sherwin is a long time volunteer at the Japanese House and Garden in Philadelphia. Practicing CHADO for many years led to an interest in making the exquisite sweets for tea called wagashi. Terry grew up in Ardmore in a Japanese- Irish household. These days she is delighted to demonstrate and share her knowledge of the Way of Tea to groups\, school and colleges throughout the area.

SUMMARY:Watershed Wellness Walks at Blue Bell Hill with Margaret Kinnevy & Lisa Kleiman
DESCRIPTION:Blue Bell Hill Parking Lot\nCome join us on a set of 2 Watershed Wellness Walks to deepen your connection to nature and to the Wissahickon Watershed. During our walk\, we will be guided into slowness\, stillness\, and quietude to better receive what is happening in the life around us and within.\nThis walk will be repeated at this location on April 19\, allowing us to see the dramatic change in scenery after the trees have leafed out.\nOur path will take us on trails of varied terrain\, connecting with nature through slow paced observation and sensory awareness intended to increase our appreciation of the environment and enhance our connection to nature.\nDuring the first hour of the walk\, we will explore deliberately\, covering only about 1 mile in distance. We will approach the area slowly and quietly\, tuning in to the environment with our senses; invitations and prompts will be offered to heighten our awareness of all the forest has to offer us. After we return to our starting point\, those interested can continue the experience with a more traditionally paced walk on different trails in the area\, allowing for observation and appreciation of another landscape and adding another hour and about 1.5 – 2 miles of distance.\nWhile the distance and elevation experienced on this hike are not difficult\, it’s important to be prepared with footwear appropriate for roots\, rocks\, dirt and possibly mud. Dress in layers for the weather\, and bring along water and snacks for one or two hours in the woods.\nDistance: ~1.5- 2 miles\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. We ask all event attendees to bring a mask and mask up if a distance of six feet cannot be maintained during the activity. If you or anyone in your household are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms\, please stay home. More information is at fow.org/covid-19.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Claire Brennan at brennan@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister Below!
