SUMMARY:Ninety Seconds to Midnight: Nuclear Dangers in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with experts on the possibility of the de-escalation of nuclear threats amid growing geopolitical tensions.\n\n\nThe Doomsday Clock\, a measure of how close humanity is to destroying itself\, implies that we are closer to apocalypse than ever before. Russian nuclear threats continue in Ukraine\, with a nuclear power plant trapped in the war zone. The suspension of New START and growing civilian stockpiles of plutonium are additional stressors. Meanwhile\, great powers continue to expand and modernize their nuclear arsenals\, further raising the stakes. The impacts of a nuclear accident\, meltdown\, or attack will reverberate around the world\, undermining our societal foundations.  \n \n \n \nWith so much at stake\, can nuclear threats be deescalated? At a time of rising tension and competition\, how might the world reduce risk and increase the trust needed to avert nuclear catastrophe? Can the Doomsday Clock be unwound? Join us as Penn alumna Rachel Bronson\, President and Chief Executive Officer at the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists\, and Joan Rohlfing\, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative discuss these urgent issues as part of the Perry World House 2023 Global Order Colloquium\, A New Age of Nuclearity? Great Powers and Greater Consequences.   \n\n\nSPEAKERS\nRachel Bronson is the president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. She oversees the publishing programs\, management of the Doomsday Clock\, and a growing set of activities around nuclear risk\, climate change\, and disruptive technologies. Before joining the Bulletin\, Bronson served as the vice president of studies at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. She also taught “Global Energy” as an adjunct professor at the Kellogg School of Management.  \n \n\n \nJoan Rohlfing is President and Chief Operating Officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI). Prior to joining NTI\, Rohlfing held senior positions with the U.S. Department of Energy and worked in New Delhi as an advisor to the US Ambassador to India\, in the wake of nuclear tests in India and Pakistan.  Earlier\, she worked as a professional staff member of the House Armed Services Committee where she oversaw nuclear programs of the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy’s national security programs.  Rohlfing began her career in the Office of the Secretary of Defense\, where she was awarded a Presidential Management Internship\, and later worked in the Office of Strategic Forces Policy. \nMODERATOR\nBryan Bender\, Vice President for Communications Strategy at  Strategic Marketing Innovations\, is an experienced journalist and communicator with an extensive network in the national security and foreign policy communities\, think tanks\, trade associations and the private sector. \nBryan brings more than two decades of experience covering the defense budget\, government acquisition\, climate security\, nuclear arms control\, and the aerospace\, shipbuilding and tech industries. As Washington Bureau Chief for Jane’s Defense Weekly and an award-winning Pentagon correspondent for the Boston Globe\, Bryan reported on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and military operations around the world. Most recently\, he was senior national correspondent for POLITICO and defense editor of POLITICO Pro\, where his beat included NASA\, the Space Force\, and the commercial space industry —- and he anchored the must-read newsletter Morning Defense.

SUMMARY:PARK AFTER DARK: Moonwalk & Stargazing Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moonlit hike and telescope observation! \n\n\nDATE\nTuesday\, September 26\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n7:00pm – 9:00pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nLemon Hill Mansion\nLemon Hill Drive\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19130 \n\n\n\n“There’s a full moon risin’. Let’s go dancin’ in the light. We know where the music’s playin’. Let’s go out and feel the night.” –Neil Young\, Harvest Moon \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a two-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation on September 26 from 7–9 PM. September’s full moon is known as the Harvest Moon because it’s the closest to the fall equinox and offers extra hours of light for farmers harvesting their summer crops. The Harvest Moon holds major cultural significance in many different communities who spend this full moon not just celebrating the fall harvest but also the moon itself. Native American tribes named it the Big Moon or Corn Moon. \nFirst\, we’ll use the moonlight to guide us on a short hike on the Lemon Hill Rim Trail\, appreciating nature lit by the glowing moon. Next\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nEstimated distance: 2 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: combination of flat open parkland and hilly trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years of experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences. \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThis hike is roughly two miles in length over a combination of open parkland and hilly terrain (easy-moderate exertion).\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 6 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are bathrooms (porta-potties) available at the beginning and end of the hike.\nBring sunscreen and bug spray.\nWe will leave a few minutes after the scheduled start time. Please arrive at the departure location at least five minutes early. We cannot guarantee that latecomers can join after the group has departed.\nAttendees are encouraged to bring their own telescopes or high-powered binoculars.\nFriendly dogs on leash are welcome.\nWe will use moonlight whenever possible\, but for portions of the trail\, we recommend bringing a flashlight\, headlamp\, or fully charged smartphone.\nFeel free to bring blankets/lawn chairs for the telescope observation portion.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stations are at 31st and Girard Ave and Art Museum Drive (both are roughly a 1/2 mile walk away). The nearest Indego bike station is at 31st and Girard (roughly a 1/2 mile away). \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org

A former ranger at Valley Forge National Historical Park and the author of Following the Drum: Women at the Valley Forge Encampment\, Loane will highlight some of the fascinating and heartfelt missives sent from camp by all ranks of men. \nThese words of love and tales of deprivation will help you see the encampment and the men who served there in a new and very human light. \nAdmission is $15. SUMMARY:Arriving\, Staying\, Leaving: The Idea of Home
DESCRIPTION:Join writer Drew Philp and artist John Jarboe for a conversation about the role of individuals in community preservation and revitalization.\n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with MGA Partners\, an award-winning\, women-owned architectural firm located near Carpenters’ Hall\, “Arriving\, Staying\, Leaving: the Idea of Home” will feature two nationally acclaimed figures\, writer Drew Philp and performer and artist John Jarboe. Together they will explore the themes of “arriving\,” staying\,” and “leaving” a place as personal decisions that collectively affect a place’s history and trajectory. \nDrew Philp is the author of A $500 House in Detroit: Rebuilding an Abandoned Home and an American City. John Jarboe\, a college classmate of Philp’s\, is the founder and artistic director of the Bearded Ladies Cabaret\, founded in 2010\, which uses the tropes of queer performance to engage audiences and explore issues of history\, sexual politics and popular culture. These two unique artists have been personal friends for almost two decades but have never worked together professionally. For this event\, Philp and Jarboe have co-created an interactive\, engaging and utterly unique experience centered on the role of individuals in preservation\, community revitalization and urban sustainability. \nBoth an exploration of personal histories surrounding their adopted home cities of Detroit and Philadelphia and a community dialogue\, this event is multi-media and multi-sensory. It features a performance by Jarboe and a reading from Philp’s book. The program will last about two hours.

SUMMARY:Farm Volunteer Day at Henry Got Crops Organizer: Weavers Way Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of field work on the farm! Get your hands in the dirt & help with\nplanting\, weeding\, mulching\, harvesting\, and/or more\n\n\nYou will be working with Akiva (he/him)\, the Farm Manager at Henry Got Crops\, as well as potentially other Weavers Way farmers\, co-op members completing working member shifts\, and other volunteers. Field work generally involves kneeling\, squatting\, or bending over for extended periods of time and being exposed to the elements and the outdoors\, i.e. sun\, rain\, bugs\, mud\, etc. We encourage taking breaks\, drinking lots of water\, and doing only what feels right for your body! There is drinking water available and a bathroom a short walk from the fields. We are out there rain or shine\, but not in unsafe conditions – you’ll receive an email if we cancel the volunteer day due to anticipated inclement weather. NOTE: IF YOU ARE A WEAVERS WAY MEMBER\, PLEASE SIGN UP THROUGH THE WW MEMBER CENTER instead\, to ensure you receive credit for your work hours. \nHow to get there: On google maps\, search “Henry Got Crops CSA and Weavers Way Farm Market at Saul High School.” The address is 7095 Henry Ave. Park in the lot and be mindful not\n to block any barn entrances please! If you don’t see anyone\, walk down the hill into the field.\n \nWhat to bring: Water\, sun protection\, clothes and closed toed-shoes for working outside and getting dirty\, garden/work gloves if you have them.\n \nAccessibility: Our parking lot is a gravel parking lot\, and paths are unpaved. Our fields are on a slope with sometimes uneven paths. There is a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. Our farm market building has a ramp to the back entrance and 3 steps up to the front entrance. We often have options for indoor\, non-strenuous work\, as well as shade tents and folding tables that can be set up for more accessible work. Please let us know if you need accessible work options so we can have projects set up\, e-mail awoods@weaversway.coop
