SUMMARY:The Luminous Forest Artist Talk with Lanny Bergner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk with Lanny Bergner in conjunction with his exhibition ‘The Luminous Forest’\n\n\nJoin us for an artist talk with Lanny Bergner \n \nInto the Mesh: A Walk Through Nature \nInLiquid\, in partnership with Gravers Lane Gallery\, is pleased to present “The Luminous Forest”\, a fiber exhibition featuring an installation by Lanny Bergner at the Crane Arts Building. A reception will be held on June 12th\, 6:00-9:00 pm\, with an artist talk 5:00 – 5:45 pm. This immersive installation at the InLiquid Gallery invites viewers to explore a meditative world where organic wonder meets meticulous craftsmanship. \nAs a resident of Fidalgo Island\, Washington State\, Lanny Bergner has been inspired by the lush diversity of nature in the Pacific Northwest woodlands for most of his life. Daily nature exposure – whether through forestland hikes or garden walks – nurtures Lanny’s appreciation for the mysterious life force existing around him. \nThis series of work reflects Lanny’s response to that environment. He creates his vision using man-made materials of metal mesh\, monofilament\, wire\, acrylic pigments and glass frit that he flame paints\, knots\, twists and hand models\, transforming these elements into ethereal constructions. \nViewers are invited to enter a forest-like environment expressed through embossed mesh wall panels accentuated with leaf shapes\, as well as with hanging pods containing luminescent biomorphic structures. Wall-mounted basket forms in dialogue with suspended geometric works complete the assemblage and act as codices for the gallery installation hinting at the mysteries of it all. \n \nLanny Bergner has worked with metal mesh since 1983 and maintains a studio on Fidalgo Island\, Washington state\, in the Pacific Northwest. He received his M.F.A. in sculpture from Tyler School of Art\, Temple University\, in 1983 after earning a B.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Washington in 1981. His work is in numerous museum collections including the Renwick Gallery\, Smithsonian American Art Museum\, Washington DC; Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Philadelphia\, PA; Seattle Art Museum\, Seattle\, WA; Museum of Art and Design\, NY\, NY; Fuller Craft Museum\, Brockton\, MA and the Central Museum of Textile\, Łódź\, Poland\, The Woodmere Museum of Art\, Philadelphia & the Abramson Cancer Center\, University of Pa. \nIn 1995 he was the recipient of the Betty Bowen Memorial Award administered by the Seattle Art Museum\, and in 2005 he was awarded a Gold Prize at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in Cheongju\, Korea. In 2010 he was one of five American artists who exhibited in the 13thInternational Triennial of Tapestry in Łódź\, Poland. \nIn 2023 Mr. Bergner was invited to lend five of his sculptures for display in the “Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses” retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in the Palais du Louvre\, Paris\, France. After the Paris run in April 2024 the exhibition moved to Brisbane\, Australia with subsequent worldwide locations pending. \nIn addition to his studio practice and exhibition schedule Mr. Bergner has taught workshops at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg\, TN and at Touchstone Center for Crafts in Farmington\, PA as well as at several National Basketry Organization Conferences. Internationally Mr. Bergner has conducted workshops at Geelong Fibre Forum in Victoria\, Australia\, and at Timeless Textiles in Newcastle\, Australia. \n \nARTIST STATEMENT \nLanny Bergner (born in Anacortes\, WA\, 1952) is a mixed-media metal mesh sculptor with a body of work ranging from small basketry to large-scale installations. \nHe creates his sculptural works using industrially woven stainless steel and copper mesh that he cuts into shapes and flame paints with a butane and/or propane torch. He then hand models the mesh creating bas-relief accentuating the flame painted design. With linesman pliers he connects the mesh together transforming the material into \nthree-dimensional semi-transparent biomorphic and geometric constructions. He finishes each piece by hand-stitching seams with coated wire. \nThe resulting forms reference the natural world\, both micro and macro. Plant biology\, undersea creatures\, cellular structures\, earth geology and otherworldly cosmology inspire his creations. His visually intricate works engage the viewer with glimpses into a universe where nature and manmade materials coalesce while celebrating the mystery and wonder of it all. \n \nThe InLiquid Gallery is located within the Crane Arts Building\, which is wheelchair accessible. There is limited accessible parking at the front of the building and a ramp leading to the main entrance. The main building door is not automated. Two all-gender bathrooms with multiple stalls are available for use — one with urinals\, one without\, and both with 1–2 wheelchair-accessible stall(s).

SUMMARY:TERRA: Bodies and Territories
DESCRIPTION:The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education presents TERRA: Bodies and Territories\, an immersive performance staged outdoors on forested land. This innovative theatrical work is the creation of Silvana Cardell\, an acclaimed choreographer whose work contends with social struggles. TERRA: Bodies and Territories confronts the profound shared vulnerabilities between women’s bodies and the natural environment. In this highly experimental work\, a multi-generational ensemble of women and femme dancers enact a sequence of symbolic narratives.\nComposer Devin Arne amplifies the drama of the forest with a sound score that blends field recordings and musical instrumentation. Sculptural set pieces by visual artist Sarah Kavage and costumes by Vasi Zivanic visually complement the natural environment\, the dancers’ movements\, and Cardell’s conceptual themes.\nTERRA will be performed outdoors on June 13\, 14\, 15 and 20\, 21\, and 22.\nPurchase Tickets\nPerformance Space\nTERRA is performed outdoors in a forested space with open seating. Audience members are invited to sit on natural log “seats” and stand or move freely in the performance space. If you need assistance with accommodations due to mobility limitations or if you require guaranteed seating\, please check “yes” on the registration form when you purchase tickets. In case of severe weather\, ticket holders will be contacted via email about rescheduled performances.\nGetting to the Schuylkill Center\nThe Schuylkill Center is located in Upper Roxborough\, Northwest Philadelphia\, at 8480 Hagy’s Mill Road\, Philadelphia\, PA 19128. There is a parking lot and Visitor Center and restrooms on site. Please see our Directions and Maps page for information about getting here via car\, bus\, train\, or bike.\nOn June 15 and 21 a shuttle service is available to the Schuylkill Center from Taller Puertorriqueno (2600 N 5th St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19133) and from the corner of Ridge Ave and Port Royal Ave. For more information about shuttle service\, check the indicated box when you purchase tickets.\nSupport for TERRA\nMajor support for TERRA has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, with additional support from Georgian Court University\, and the 2025 Creative Sector Flex Fund\, a program by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
