SUMMARY:What's Beyond the Fence Walk
DESCRIPTION:FOR ALL AGES\nAre you new to Tyler or a visitor who has never explored the trails outside the deer fence? Join Tyler docent Dave Charlton for a monthly series of leisurely walks on the Tyler Trails. We will spend one to one and a half hours learning to find our way in the natural areas while discovering seasonal changes in the landscape and the flora and fauna that inhabit it. We’ll keep to easy walking trails where you can feel free to bring the family. In November\, the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold\, blanketing the ground as they fall. The days grow quieter as nature settles in for the cold days ahead.\nCheck in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk on the Tyler trails\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Participants should bring water and perhaps a walking stick. PLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on some of our trails. We recommend a carrier if you bring an infant or young child. \nAbout your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer\, a founding member of our docent program\, and a certified PA Master Naturalist.\nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED\nMembers (sign in for your discount!): $5 per adult\, $3 per child ages 3-17\, no charge for children ages two and under. A registered adult must accompany all children.\nNon-Members: $21 per adult\, $13 per child ages 3-17\, no charge for children ages two and under. The fee includes admission\, so feel free to spend the day at Tyler! SUMMARY:LoST in Philadelphia National Historical Park - a Smart-guided Bikeway Tour
DESCRIPTION:Along with American history buffs\, cycle tourists will enjoy this national treasure chock full of scenic vistas\, and great bikeways.\n\n\nLoST in Philadelphia National Historical Park\n– a Smart-guided Cycle Tour\n \nAlong with American history buffs\, cycle tourists will enjoy this national treasure chock full of scenic vistas\, and great bikeways. \n \nThe 3\,500-acre Valley Forge National Historical Park is amazing to explore\, especially on a bike tour! Visitors can peek into American history with General George Washington’s headquarters and an encampment of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. \n \nThis is also home to the National Memorial Arch\, modeled after Rome’s Arch of Titus. Dedicated in 1917\, this grand structure memorializes the triumphant arrival of General Washington and the Continental Army during the winter of 1777-78. \n \nNatural beauty also adorns the tour route. Along with the scenic park grounds the Schuylkill River and Perkiomen Creek provide ample waterside vistas to take in along the way. The tour also visits Lower Perkiomen Valley Park\, a popular 107-acre area for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. \n \nThe tour is a Long or Short Tour (LoST) – it comes in two lengths – 15 and 31 miles. Both options explore Valley Forge National Historical Park. The longer tour is more in-depth and travels further along the Schuylkill River Bikeway. With a staggered starting time\, both long and short-distance tourists could ride together from the National Arch to the tasty spot. \n \nThe tasty spot is towards the end of the adventure\, which is friendly to furry friends if you happen to be touring with yours (found on Bring Fido). Details are included with the tour links. \n \nThe route follows the lay of the land which is mostly flat with only 400′ of climbing over 15 miles on the Short tour and 885′ of climbing over 31 miles on the Long tour. Both tours are an 83% bikeway loop mostly on paved bikeways with some crushed stone segments\, and about 50% shaded. In some short segments the route shares the road with motor vehicles. As usual\, the tour comes with the CycleNuts 50% downhill guarantee. There are a few segments where you might use your bike gears\, but nothing to work up too much of a sweat about. Speaking of sweating – it’s optional. You set your pace\, starting time\, and touring agenda with CycleNuts’ smart-guided tour. \n \nPoints of Interest: \n\nArtillery Park – a historical field where Brigadier General Henry Knox commanded and dispatched Continental Army cannons.\nSchuylkill River – The 135-mile river is one of the Delaware River’s largest tributaries.\nPerkiomen Creek – A 38-mile tributary of the Schuylkill River voted one of Pennsylvania’s best swimming holes in 2024.\nMuhlenberg Brigade – 9 reconstructed Continental Army huts are the center of historical reenactment living history events and 18th century costumed volunteers and park rangers.\nNational Memorial Arch – Impressive monument honoring the return of General George Washington and the Continental Army to Valley Forge.\nValley Forge Train Station – opened in 1911 by the Reading Railroad as an elegant stop for the thousands visiting Valley Forge State Park\, is now used as a museum and information space.\nJohn James Audubon Center – 175-acre estate managed by the National Audubon Society where visitors can explore the 18th-century life and art of John James Audubon\, in a historic\, three-story stone farmhouse museum surrounded by a world of birds.\nLower Perkiomen Valley Park – 107-acre Montgomery County park popular with outdoor activity seekers.\nVisitor Center at Valley Forge – opened in 1976 provides a central stop for Valley Forge touring information complete with a store and museum.\nValley Forge National Historical Park – 3\,500 acres of natural beauty and history. Pennsylvania’s first state park opened in 1893 and was given to the National Park Service in 1976.\nGeneral Washington’s Headquarters – tour the historic building used as General Washington’s war room.\n\n \nBikeways: \n\nChapel Trail\nChester Valley Trail\nAudubon Loop Trail\nSchuylkill River Trail\nSullivan’s Bridge Trail\nPerkiomen Creek Trail\nSchuylkill River Oak Trail\nJoseph Plumb Martin Trail\nJoseph Plumb Martin Loop Trail\n\n \nCycleNuts LoST Adventures \nThis is a CycleNuts LoST adventure – an acronym for Long or Short Tour. There are two lengths\, which allows long and short-distance riders to tour together to the same turnaround spot. \nGO LONG OR GO SHORT! 1 starting spot and 2 tour lengths. Rider’s choice! 15 or 31 roundtrip miles. \nHow a LoST works. The 15 and 31-mile routes start at different times; travel some of the same bikeways; allow both groups – long and short – an opportunity to socialize at the same tasty stop; and return together to the starting spot. \n \nWHY CHOOSE a Smart-guided Selfie Cycle Tour? \nYou get all the benefits of a guided tour without the drawbacks of a tour guide\, other tourists\, time restrictions\, and a rigid tour agenda. With this smart-guided tour\, you can go when you want\, at your speed\, and hang out at a spot as long as you wish. You can even wander off the planned route and the smart guide will get you back on track when you are ready. \n \nHERE’S THE PLAN: You bring a bike and a smartphone. SUMMARY:Experimental Woven Collage Making with Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS)
DESCRIPTION:his experimental collage class will teach participants to make their own paper collage weavings! We will explore the idea of finding healing through intuitive art making and getting lost in the process of creating\, by weaving together strips of different colored paper\, mixing in other collaged elements\, and letting the materials and process dictate what our creations become. \nDVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Exhibition: What do we do with the shards of something broken—especially when the thing that’s been broken is the self? This is the question at the heart of “Finding Healing in the Remnants\,” an exhibition of work by multimedia artist Sammy Kovnat (SKOVeS) proudly presented by Da Vinci Art Alliance. Rebuilding has a reputation for being painful—but what if there were comfort to be found in the familiarity of the pieces? \nLearn more at: davinciartalliance.org \nDVAA is a historic row home in the Bella Vista neighborhood. We are not yet wheelchair accessible; Da Vinci is a three floor gallery with narrow staircases. (We are working towards becoming ADA accessible by 2027!) It is 5 steps up to the first floor level\, and 14 steps from the first to second floor\, where the gender-neutral bathroom is located. Da Vinci has masks and COVID tests available at our events. We can reserve seats for low-vision and Deaf and HoH community members as needed. DVAA exhibitions are free to visit and all of our programs are free or suggested donation. If food is being served at the event you are coming to\, please reach out to us about dietary restrictions. SUMMARY:Ghost Signs of Old City
DESCRIPTION:See ghost signs and learn of the businesses behind them\, from lettered signs on building facades to those embedded in the sidewalks\n\n\n“Ghost Signs” are faded and often forgotten business and advertisement signs\, usually found on the front or sides of buildings. The effects of decades of weather\, neglect\, and cover-up attempts have diminished their eye-catching glow\, but they still provide a window into the past\, revealing generations of a building’s history and uncovering fascinating stories of our city. These signs can be found all over Philadelphia\, but a large concentration of them are in the Old City neighborhood. \nJoin Hidden City as we explore a range of ghost signs from hand-painted lettering on building facades (some even at eye level) to those embedded in the sidewalks. Businesses discussed will include nautical instruments\, department stores\, restaurant supply companies\, tanners\, printers\, brush makers\, and so many more! \nMeet at the northeast corner of 3rd and Chestnut Streets: 243 Chestnut St\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106. This tour requires significant walking on uneven brick and slate sidewalks of the Old City neighborhood; proper footwear is a must. \nTour guide Jordan Keiffer has been documenting Philadelphia’s ghost signs on the Instagram page @phillyghostsigns since 2019. His goal is to connect people to the forgotten stories of these faded signs through historic narratives and supplemental images. His work was featured in a special exhibition on ghost signs at the Neon Museum of Philadelphia in 2021. A native of Montgomery County\, PA\, Keiffer is a proud Temple University alum. He enjoys long runs and bike rides through the city that allow him to periodically check in on ghost signs. \nIf you are a Hidden City Member\, don’t forget to use your promo code for a member discount! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? SUMMARY:A Taste of First State Ciders
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning cidermaker “Doc” Cheskin in a discussion of the rich history of apples\, cider\, and hard cider in this region and the art and science of cider making. SUMMARY:Free Fall Documentary Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an evening of community celebration! Showing begins at 7PM.\n\n\nAbout the Project \nIn 2008\, Founder and Executive Director Dave Kratz approached the Borough\, asking how he could help the community. They pointed him toward the town’s skatepark\, citing a growing group of “parentless and directionless teens.” \nFrom there\, an interesting story began to unfold: the trials and tribulations of forming a community\, grassroots fundraising\, and operating a community center\, all while being personally invested in positively shaping the community. \nIn this documentary\, you’ll hear it from the people themselves: those who stuck around for the 10 years it took to raise 1 million dollars\, gracious donors\, and students and families directly impacted by the park’s mission.
