SUMMARY:Clay Play Open Studio Making
DESCRIPTION:Come out and touch some clay!\n\n\nThis will be an ongoing event every other week. Future Sessions after August 28th can be found HERE \nThis is an open session clay making workshop. Each person will receive 1-2 pounds of clay per session and access to our basic tools and supplies. Pieces can be glazed with color and will be once fired and ready for pickup in 3-4 weeks. We will have limited colors available and suggest that you purchase your own Stroke and Coat glaze if you’d like consistent color and control. You’re welcome to bring any of your own tools. \nThe instructor leading your session will have a basic project that you can build if you aren’t working independantly. Some sessions will be more guided than others. \nAny unfinished clay pieces should go home with you. We will do our best to provide you with plastic and wrap enough to walk out with your piece so you can keep it moist enough to complete it and dry it ahead of firing. Please plan ahead if you know you were looking to make something complex that you’ll want to take home and continue working on. \nThis is an ongoing workshop offering. You can come to this session\, take your piece home to finish and dry it fully\, then bring it back in the future to have it fired. Or you can complete your piece in the 2 hour session and leave it at the studio to dry and be fired for you. We will have a clay artist on site that can answer technical questions and get you started with a project idea. Suggested age is adults but ages 7+up can attend along with a paying adult. \nAbout your instructors:Clay artist Sea Star (pronouns: they/them and she/her) has been making sculptures with clay since they were 2 years old. The material has been a great exercise in play\, design\, and patience. Over the years\, they have harvested and processed unique clays from Maine to Tennessee to Puerto Rico. In 2022 Sea earned a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from MICA and currently works as a Glaze and Decoration Technician for a Philadelphia pottery manufacturer. \nCassie Jones (pronouse: She/They) is the craft coven founder and lead organizer. She has her hands in most crafts but has a great passion for anything scultping. When running open studio you can expect a concentration on non-funtional applications and decorative projects. Currently working on staff at Black Hound Clay studio Cassie has also worked many years at Painting with a Twist in Philadelphia\, run a leather brand CUSP by Cassie\, is building a line of chain stitch embroidered patches\, as well as many other ventures since graduating from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. \nAbout the space:This event is located in the Starr Garden Playground rec center. When you enter the gates for the playground you will walk to the right of the building to the entrance that is facing Lombard Street. The rec center is mostly used for after school programs and kids camps but is empty in the evenings so they allow us to have adult programming. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snacks\, and there will be light music and a social studio atmosphere rather than a classroom. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.TheCraftCoven.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes. \nIf you woud like updates on pieces that are in the firing process please watch the IG account @CassiesCraftCoven for updates\, or email Info@TheCraftCoven.org with the date you attended.

SUMMARY:Tä: Harmonious Dynamics with Goni Shifron and Uri Hershberg
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation of a participatory art piece that combines art and science.\n\n\n“Tä” \nHarmonious Dynamics: Exploring Emergent Cooperation through Participatory Art and Brain Activity \n“Tä” is an art participatory piece that emerged from joint research between Goni Shifron (artist) and Uri Hershberg (scientist). A collaboration of art and science aiming to identify the moment when individual actions merge into adaptive group dynamics. In “Tä”\, we invite the audience to be part of an immersive experience of art and have unique access and contribution to scientific research. \nTä is for 12 participants. Following simple rules\, each individual will move pebbles between piles on a table and the group will together create the dynamics of the entire population. Participating in Tä reveals large questions about harmonious dynamics that each of us can relate to our own way of interpretation (symbolic\, geographic\, sociological\, and esthetic considerations). \nFor the next presentation of Tä we will for the first time\, give some of the participants special wireless wearable headbands which can be used to measure brain activity. This event will act also as a first pilot study for an international research team studying how cooperation and synchrony emerge from the interaction of unconnected individuals. \n \nDETAILS: \nFriday\, August 30\, 2024 \nFirst Session begins at 4:30 PM*Doors open at 4:00 PM\, performance begins at 4:30 PM* \nSecond Session begins at 6:00 PM*Doors open at 5:30 PM\, performance begins at 6:00 PM* \nOpen discussion with the artist and researchers after each session. \nTickets are available for both participants and observers. If you choose a participant ticket\, we will be in touch by email with more details ahead of the event and will also send a release form since this performance will be recorded for documentation and research purposes. \nParadigm Arts Building\, 3rd Floor Gallery12 N. 3rd StreetPhiladelphia\, PA 19106 \n \nGoni Shiforn is an Israeli artist living and working in Paris. She graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in 2016. Across her own work and collaborations\, Goni explores intimate and universal stories through various mediums (installation\, performance\, photography). \nUri Hershberg is a Professor of Biology and the director of the Center for Biophysics and Quantitative Biology at the University of Haifa. He studies how complex living systems learn through interaction with their environments\, mostly\, but not always\, by studying the adaptive immune system. He tries in his research to create true stories about biology. \nHasan Ayaz is an Associate Professor at Drexel University School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health Systems. His research is focused on unraveling the complexities of human brain functioning through mobile neuroimaging. He utilizes next-generation brain sensing technologies and neuro/physiological data analytic approaches with applications ranging from aerospace to healthcare. \nLuciano Perondi is a typeface\, graphic and game designer. He was appointed associate professor of Design at the IUAV Venice in 2018 and he is also a member of the Alpaca and Cast\, cooperatives of designers. Often within a theoretical approach\, his interests are focused on visual studies\, writing\, typography\, games and information design mostly in a design for all perspective. In particular he focuses on the empirical study of visual syntax\, also known as synsemia\, a foundational aspect of graphic design.

SUMMARY:Making Space: a time to learn about and honor our grief toget
DESCRIPTION:Collectively\, we will explore some of the myths surrounding grief\, obstacles to our grieving\, and opportunities to honor our losses\n\n\n“Rarely\, if ever\, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.”- bell hooks \nOur grief needs community to be witnessed\, to be affirmed\, to help us connect to our shared humanity. In our dominate culture\, grieving is meant to be private; something we do behind closed doors and never talk about. We’re encouraged to be strong\, keep going\, and move on as if our hearts aren’t broken and our worlds aren’t rearranged. \nOn Friday\, August 30th National Grief Awareness Day\, join d’griot and Naila Francis of This Hallowed Wilderness for “Making Space: a time to learn about and honor our grief together.” This special offering will be held from 5pm to 7 pm at d’griot\, 51 Maplewood Mall. We will explore some of the myths surrounding grief\, obstacles to our grieving\, and opportunities to honor our losses— all in the warmth and care of community. \nYou are invited to participate in the community altar by bringing and adding something that represents your grief and/or respond creatively on individual canvases to help you hold what feels heavy in your life. Join us for a sharing circle starting at 6pm where we’ll make room to tend our hearts together. \nTea and fruit will be provided. Donations appreciated.
