SUMMARY:Fungi Foray with Philly Myco Club
DESCRIPTION:Join Philadelphia Mycology Club’s Kevin Popowich for a Fungi Foray along the trails of Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary to discover and uncover the wonderful world of mycology. Together\, we’ll explore the steep slopes of Bougher Hill overlooking the scenic Delaware River and see what mushrooms and other fungi we can find.    \nWhat is a foray? Different than foraging\, which is the pursuit of only edible species\, forays are a survey of the mushroom diversity in an ecological landscape. We will adhere to Natural Lands’ Leave No Trace policy and not remove any mushrooms or other plant material from the preserve.  \nBefore we start hunting for mushrooms\, we’ll congregate for a brief introduction with an informational handout. This program will cover identification\, safety\, look-alikes\, and resources to help you continue your fungal adventures.   \nAbout our partner: A Philadelphia-based nonprofit\, Philadelphia Mycology Club’s mission is to study\, collect\, and document fungi; to foster accessibility\, diversity\, and inclusivity through educating the community on fungi; and to steward the land and advocate for fungal conservation. They work with other environmental groups in and around Philadelphia to provide free and accessible mushroom guidance in an urban setting and to work towards common goals of environmental justice.

SUMMARY:First Friday Opening Reception: The Hues that Guide Us
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of The Hues that Guide Us at The National Old City Apartments\n\n\nJoin us for the Opening Reception of The Hues that Guide Us! Featuring work by Sandi Neiman Lovitz and Val Rossman. \nFriday\, June 6th\, 6p – 8p \n \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe Hues that Guide Us is a dynamic exhibition that explores the impulsive and persuasive power of color\, featuring artists Val Rossman and Sandi Neiman Lovitz. Both artists share an intrinsic connection to the language of color\, using it as a conduit to explore and express deeply personal experiences. Rossman’s work is a blend of careful planning and unpredictable disruptions\, where layers of painted shapes\, empty spaces\, and marks represent the constant interplay between control and chaos in life. Her process\, filled with vibrant color and spontaneous gestures\, reflects a joyful and adventurous exploration of the self\, rooted in the belief that beauty\, joy\, and quietude are essential in navigating a turbulent world. \nLovitz\, similarly\, channels the transformative power of color to create expressive\, spontaneous works that embody hope\, happiness\, and empowerment. From her early infatuation with a robin’s egg blue to the revelation of abstract art by Franz Kline\, Lovitz has always been driven by color’s ability to transcend the limitations of words. Her paintings are layered with rhythms and bold bursts of color that invite the viewer to engage in a conversation of their own\, tapping into feelings and stories beyond the surface. In The Hues that Guide Us\, both artists celebrate the unexpected and transformative possibilities of color\, inviting us to embark on our own visual journey\, where intuition\, emotion\, and creativity merge. \nLearn More: \nhttps://www.inliquid.org/satellite-events/the-hues-that-guide-us

SUMMARY:"Where Olive Trees Weep" Film Screening\, Discussion\, & more!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of Palestinian olive oil tasting with Equal Exchange followed by screening and discussion of Where Olive Trees Weep.\n\n\nJoin us for a transformative evening! \nPlease note: You must reserve your ticket at ($10) tinyurl.com/WOTW66 to secure your spot. Questions? please email sakinahoasis@gmail.com \nWe are excited to bring local friends\, family\, and neighbors together for a screening of this impactful film. \nWe will begin the evening with a tasting of Palestinian olive oil presented by Equal Exchange. Following the screening we will have time for discussion and building community. \nFrom Producer: “Where Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. \nWe follow\, among others\, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We also witness Dr. Gabor Maté offer trauma-healing work to a group of women who were tortured in Israeli prisons. \nAncient landscapes bear deep scars\, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation\, expulsions\, imprisonment\, home demolitions\, water deprivation\, and denial of basic human rights. Yet\, through the veil of oppression\, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty?”

SUMMARY:Annual Nesting Bird Census
DESCRIPTION:Grab binoculars and join us in counting birds at Mariton. Since 1981\, staff and volunteers have conducted an annual nesting bird census to count the number of species and individual birds breeding at this 200-acre preserve. \nThe census results serve as an important tool to help assess habitat management strategies. Healthy habitats sustain various nesting species\, including flycatchers\, tanagers\, thrushes\, and warblers. Mariton’s woodlands are particularly important to birds like the Wood Thrush\, which requires large forests for nesting.
