SUMMARY:Cultivating a Native Lawn
DESCRIPTION:Traditional turfgrass lawns provide little benefit to native biodiversity\, are significant sources of air and water pollution\, and require huge investments of time to maintain. In a world grappling with the climate crisis\, every action counts\, and adopting a new lawn paradigm that champions native biodiversity in your own backyard is a powerful way to take control of your environmental impact. Todd Bittner\, plant ecologist\, will discuss a visionary lawn paradigm shift – one where lush\, low-growing native grasses and forbs take center stage. Explore the journey behind Cornell Botanic Gardens’ native lawn\, from its inception to the multitude of benefits it brings\, and the invaluable lessons it has taught us.\nThis program takes place online on Thursday\, November 7\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nTodd Bittner is the Director of Natural Areas for the Cornell Botanic Gardens. The Gardens’ Natural Areas program protects and manages a system of preserves spanning nearly 3\,700 acres across 40 natural areas. The preserves encompass one-third of Cornell’s iconic campus landscape\, including two massive gorges\, scenic Beebe Lake\, and a renowned wildflower garden\, which hosts the Gardens’ “native lawn” that was featured in the New York Times in 2023. Todd leads the protection and stewardship of these lands and the Gardens’ native biodiversity conservation efforts. Todd also directly educates students and the public on natural heritage topics and is a lecturer in the School of Plant Science. Todd is also a conservation scientist with the Center for Plant Conservation\, and in 2020\, was named a “Conservation Champion” by the Center.

SUMMARY:Habitat Advocate: Site Assessment 101 - Sit-Spots to Soil Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Practice how to observe and record the baseline aspects of a landscape before diving into designing a habitat garden.\n\n\nBuilding observation skills is essential in building biodiversity in our landscapes. In this class\, we will learn about the 5 E’s of Ecological Gardening and will conduct a site analysis. Expand your reach by applying these newly acquired observation skills of hydrology\, sun/shade analysis\, circulation\, and more in your home landscape or in community project space! \nThe Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10\,000 acres of natural lands\, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our fall 2024 Habitat Advocate Certification program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. \nThe cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive\, please reach out to Keith Williams\, VP of Engagement and Education\, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. \n \nYour Presenters\nElyse Jurgen\, owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co.\, is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. SUMMARY:Al Jaar Qabla Al Daar\, The Neighbour before the House Screening at 12G!
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, November 7th\, from 6 PM – 8 PM\, Twelve Gates is honored to present a film screening by the Mumbai-based artist group CAMP.\n\n\nOn Thursday\, November 7th\, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM\, Twelve Gates is honored to present a film screening of Al Jaar Qabla Al Daar\, The Neighbour before the House\, 2009-2011\, by the Mumbai-based artist group CAMP. This will be followed by a conversation with CAMP founding members Shaina Anand and Ashok Sukumaran. \nPalestinian families in Jerusalem / Al Quds look out and speak from their homes using a CCTV camera in 2009. The film was made in 2011. \n“The Neighbour before the House” is a series of video probes into the landscape of East Jerusalem. Eight Palestinian families living in Sheikh Jarrah\, Silwan\, Beit Hanina and the Old City use their TV screens to look out into their neighbourhood\, via a CCTV camera mounted on the rooftops of their homes\, “tripods made of stones”. Instead of bearing witness in the usual way\, these families control the cameras from their homes; inquisitiveness\, jest\, memory\, desire and doubt pervades the project of watching. A voice finds an image\, an image is probed beneath its surface\, thoughts withdraw or rebound. In these specific times and places\, camera movements and live commentary become ways in which Palestinian residents evaluate what can be seen\, and speak about the nature of their distance from others. \nCAMP (founded by Shaina Anand and Ashok Sukumaran in 2007) is a Mumbai-based studio of people who are artists\, architects\, filmmakers\, and technologists. They host long-running video archives Pad.ma and Indiancine.ma\, a rooftop cinema for the past 15 years\, and make art that is possessed of an infrastructural imagination. Their works have been exhibited in museums\, film festivals\, and public spaces worldwide—including streets\, markets\, and neighbourhoods in Bangalore\, San Jose\, Dakar\, Mexico City\, Jerusalem\, Kolkata\, Kabul\, Delhi\, Ljubljana\, Münster\, and Bombay—as well as in the biennials of Shanghai\, Sharjah\, Gwangju\, Taipei\, Singapore\, Liverpool\, Chicago\, Lahore\, and Kochi-Muziris. Their artworks are part of the permanent collections of major museums globally. Recent shows include solos at Sharjah Art Foundation\, (2022) Nam June Paik Art Center (2021)\, Argos Center for Art and Media\, Brussels\, and the De Appel Gallery\, Amsterdam (2019) and performances at M+\,HongKong (2023) and MoMA\, New York (2023). In 2020 they were awarded the 7th Nam June Paik Centre Prize. CAMP were Forensic Architecture guest professors at Goldsmiths\, London\, for 2023-2024 and are visiting fellows at the Center for Experimental Ethnography at UPenn for 2024-2025.

SUMMARY:A DVAA Screening of "The Invisible Man" (1933)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at DVAA for a special screening of James Whale’s 1933 classic “The Invisible Man”. Popcorn and candy will be provided at the event. DVAA uses art to connect people and build collective resilience in spaces across Greater Philadelphia. Please consider a donation of $10 to support this event and more like it! \nAbout the Movie: While researching a new drug\, Dr. Jack Griffin stumbles on a potion that can make him invisible. When he reveals his new ability to his old mentor and his fiancée\, it’s clear that a side effect of the potion is insanity. Jack goes on a violent rampage\, and the police struggle to hunt him down\, unable to see their target\, while his mentor and his former partner desperately try to devise a plan to capture him. \nThis is an accompanying event of Colin Pezzano’s Group Exhibition “Materialize”. \nAbout the Exhibition: Craft Movie Club presents: Materialize explores the intersection of classic cinema and contemporary craft practices. Sixteen artists\, working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal\, and glass\, respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, The Invisible Man. In the film\, invisibility is made possible through the extraction of a flower used originally to bleach textiles. Just as the scientist Griffin transforms himself by manipulating the natural world\, these artists transform raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects. Ninety-one years later\, the film’s themes of invisibility\, scientific experimentation\, and ethical dilemmas remain relevant. This exhibition redefines expectations\, blending experimental techniques with traditional crafts to provoke thought and inspire a modern audience.
