SUMMARY:It's All In The Family
DESCRIPTION:A Presentation on the Diversity and Relatedness of Flowering Plants.\n\n\nWe gardners are excited about and make plans to increase the diversity of plants in our gardens and landscapes. A whole new level of appreciation arises when we learn to recognize that many of the plants we grow and see growing in the wild are related to each other\, as in a family. For example\, alyssum\, broccoli\, and radishes all belong to the mustard family. Carrots\, dill\, and poison hemlock are related in the carrot family. The goal of this presentation is to appreciate another aspect of the diversity of flowering plants by seeing how related plants are grouped together into families. \nPresentation by Dr Gary Emberger a Plant Pathologist.

SUMMARY:Cavity-Nesting Birds
DESCRIPTION:Explore species of cavity-nesters in this region\, including Tree Swallows\, Eastern Bluebirds\, House Wrens\, and Carolina Chickadees.\n\n\nTHURSDAY\, AUGUST 15 \nCavity-Nesting Birds \n7:00 – 8:30 PM \nJennifer Uehling\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor of Biology\, West Chester University \nSponsored by Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens + Tredyffrin Public Library’s Arbo-READ-um partnership \nCavity-nesters are birds that nest in holes in trees\, and they will also readily nest in human-provided nest boxes. This creates an excellent system for studying bird breeding behavior and ecology. Dr. Uehling will explore species of cavity-nesters in this region\, including Tree Swallows\, Eastern Bluebirds\, House Wrens\, and Carolina Chickadees\, and will share findings from her own research on Tree Swallow foraging ecology. \nFree of charge | Virtual event (a Zoom link will be emailed to participants prior to lecture date) \nThis virtual lecture is a part of our Third Thursday Lecture series

SUMMARY:Early Morning Summer Hike with Mary Oliver\, Led by Jean McWilliams and Lisa Kleiman
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Erik Dasbach\nMeet at the Blue Bell Hill Parking Lot\nCome join us for the fourth in a series of Mary Oliver hikes\, this time focusing on poems in which Oliver celebrates the season of summer. We are planning an early start to beat the summer heat\, beginning at Blue Bell Trailhead and including sections of the Yellow Trail as well as a stop at Historic RittenhouseTown. The distance is 3-3.5 miles and the hike is moderate in difficulty. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult; no dogs except for service animals\, please.\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nLevel: Moderate (some inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nI thought the earth\nremembered me\, she\ntook me back so tenderly\, arranging\nher dark skirts\, her pockets\nfull of lichens and seeds. I slept\nas never before\, a stone\non the riverbed\, nothing\nbetween me and the white fire of the stars\nbut my thoughts\, and they floated\nlight as moths among the branches\nof the perfect trees. All night\nI heard the small kingdoms breathing\naround me\, the insects\, and the birds\nwho do their work in the darkness. All night\nI rose and fell\, as if in water\, grappling\nwith a luminous doom. By morning\nI had vanished at least a dozen times\ninto something better.\nSleeping in the Forest\, by Mary Oliver\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!
