SUMMARY:Bodies and Souls
DESCRIPTION:“My concern is with humanity. I want to confront the viewer with life and with what we are doing to each other. I hope to awaken in the viewer a sense of compassion . . . without compassion there is nothing.”\n—Luis Cruz Azaceta \nBodies and Souls examines the liberatory power of figurative art. Though often treated as conservative in the second half of the 20th century\, artists used representational and realist methods to assert presence for those omitted from dominant narratives or harmfully depicted by those outside their communities. Realism and representation remain powerful means to show embodied human experience\, encompassing gender\, sexuality\, interpersonal relationships\, psychological states\, and connections to home. \nThese methods can help us imagine the world we want to live in. Representational art has been critical for artists who want to make themselves and their communities visible on their own terms. It provides the agency to see and be seen\, to show relationships\, pleasure\, and autonomy. Representing ourselves is a powerful means of celebrating our full humanity. \nThis is the throughline of an eclectic collection formed by Philadelphians Robert and Frances Coulborn Kohler. Bodies and Souls celebrates their devotion to artists and immense generosity towards PAFA. Featuring over 120 works given and promised to the museum\, the exhibition will examine prominent themes in the collection\, integrating artists who are often seen independently or as part of regional communities. \nBodies and Souls is presented concurrently with an exhibition of the same title featuring the Kohlers’ personal collection at Woodmere\, Charles Knox Smith Hall\, 9201 Germantown Ave. Bodies & Souls – Woodmere. \nFeatured Artwork: Rafael Ferrer (born 1933) El Bolero\, 1983–84. Oil on canvas; 60 × 72 in. © Rafael Ferrer\, courtesy of the artist \nThe exhibition will include works by Robert Arneson\, Luis Cruz Azaceta\, Joan Brown\, Roy DeForest\, Rafael Ferrer\, Viola Frey\, Gregory Gillespie\, Juan Gonzalez\, Red Grooms\, Anne Minich\, Gladys Nilsson\, Ed Paschke\, Christina Ramberg\, Winfred Rembert\, Tabitha Vevers\, John Wilde\, Didier William\, Karl Wirsum\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Charm Offensive @ Reilly Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Charm Offensive forms part of “Radical Americana\,” a city-wide series of exhibitions planned for Philadelphia in 2026\, marking the Semiquincentennial of the United States and spearheaded by The Clay Studio. In Charm Offensive at Park Towne Place\, John Y. Wind presents the ephemera of the art intervention taking place at the William M. Reilly Memorial in April 2026. John brings the Reilly Memorial\, a 6-sculpture bronze monument commemorating Revolutionary War heroes\, into the 21st century. Wind\, himself an immigrant\, conducted deep historical research in partnership with the Association for Public Art\, then temporarily embellished the statues and pedestals with handcrafted jewelry and mixed-media assemblages—necklaces\, belts\, draped flags\, and charm-laden chains—fabricated from laser-cut acrylic\, found objects\, and resin. The work unpacks visual codes of biography and heroism\, reframing them through a contemporary lens and engaging urgent conversations about immigration\, commemoration\, and representation. \nCharm Offensive Includes highlights of the sculptural embellishments themselves\, documentation of the public installation\, and stand-alone artworks—collages\, digital compositions\, and lenticular prints—that visualize these mediations and paint a fuller picture of the work’s scope\, both as conceptual studies and fully realized artworks.

With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Trail work: using long-handled tools for scraping\, digging\, tamping\, and cutting; moving heavy objects\n• Planting site maintenance: using long handled tools for cutting\, scraping\, and digging\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over\, using long handled tools for cutting vines\n• Litter clean-up\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and remember to bring water with you. Detailed information and confirmation of the meeting location will be sent by email one business day before the event. If you are hoping to bring a group of 5 or more people\, please reach out to us first.\nRegistration is required for all volunteer service days so that participants can be informed of emergency cancellations. Service days are cancelled in steady precipitation or other dangerous weather conditions.\nFor more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org.\nRegister below!

SUMMARY:The Solar System Zoo: a lecture with UPENN Professor Gary Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Discover the many fascinating members of our Solar System\, how numerous small planets were found\, and how they formed alongside the Sun.\n\n\nLearn why the question “How many planets are there?” is more complicated than it seems in this fun and informative presentation. \n \nProfessor Bernstein’s research centers on extracting gems of astronomical knowledge from large piles of astronomical images. Currently his group is pursuing two main science projects with the ~100\,000 sky exposures of the Dark Energy Survey. \nGravitational lensing is the deflection of light by gravity as predicted by General Relativity. These deflections can cause dramatic distortions of background objects\, or subtle changes in shape known as weak lensing. By measuring statistical correlations among the shapes of hundreds of millions of galaxies in the DES\, we can measure the properties of dark matter and dark energy\, which do not emit or absorb any light of their own. \nProfessor Bernstein and collaborators are also searching the DES images for solar system members orbiting beyond Neptune\, a.k.a. trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). These thousands of small icy bodies are remnants of the early phases of the formation of our Solar System and give clues to the dramatic rearrangements of the giant planets that occurred early on.

SUMMARY:Mind the Composition
DESCRIPTION:Mind the Composition features artists Catherine Gontarek and Richard King. In this exhibition\, the artists focus on meticulously arranging the shape\, color\, and design in their work\, assembling defined structures. Catherine’s work alters a variety of photographs through collage that creates a new set of imagery that centers around the human mind. Richard’s work dives more into abstract geometric structures\, drawing from surrounding buildings and cityscapes. \nExhibitions can be seen by appointment; call InLiquid to schedule: 215-235-3405.
