SUMMARY:TAKE A HIKE on the Trolley Trail!
DESCRIPTION:Explore the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network along this 4-mile loop hike. \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, November 12\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n10:00am – 12:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nChamounix Mansion\n3250 Chamounix Drive\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19131 \n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Kevin Roche on November 12 from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM for a guided hike to learn about the Trolley Trail’s fascinating past and present. The Fairmount Park Trolley operated in East and West Park from 1896-1946\, providing a reliable and enjoyable means of accessing park amenities. Explore the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network including massive stone tunnels and bridge abutments along this 4-mile loop hike. \nMore about the Trolley Trail: \nFairmount Park Conservancy–along with its key partners at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) and the Belmont Plateau Trails Alliance (BPTA)–have been working to develop the Trolley Trail while pursuing key goals: reducing adverse impacts on habitat and preserving the single track mountain bike trails. The new Trolley Trail will wend its way close to bridge abutments and through tunnels dating back to 1897. Future phases will bring signage\, maps\, and trail blazes to guide users through the vast reaches of West Fairmount Park once only accessible via the trolley. Read more here. \nEstimated distance: 4-mile loop\nLevel: moderate\nTerrain: mainly hilly trails \n\nTICKET PRICES: FREE in honor of Love Your Park Week. PLEASE ONLY REGISTER IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND!\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe hike is roughly four miles in length over mainly hilly trails.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 14 & up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nUnfortunately\, there are no bathrooms along the hike route so please plan accordingly.\nBring sunscreen and bug spray.\nWe will leave promptly at the scheduled time. Please arrive at the departure location at least 5 minutes early. Latecomers aren’t guaranteed to join after the group has departed.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stop is at Ford and Cranston Road (a one-mile walk from the start). The nearest Indego bike station is at MLK Drive and Strawberry Mansion Bridge (about one mile away). \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n\n\n\nThe hike will take place in light rain. In case of severe storms or other inclement weather\, the event will be canceled and attendees are eligible for a full refund.

SUMMARY:Meadow Bathing at South Philly Meadows
DESCRIPTION:A gentle immersion into the infinite offerings of one of South Philly’s only wild spaces.\n\n\nWhat will we do? \nSpend two hours in the company of a certified forest therapy guide who will lead you through a gentle outdoor immersion. Forest Therapy\, also known as “Shinrin-Yoku\,” refers to the practice of spending time in forested areas for the purpose of enhancing health\, happiness\, and a sense of awe. The Japanese words translate into English as “Forest Bathing” and refers to bathing in the beneficial compounds which trees emit\, such as oxygen and phytoncides. Though the city’s Master Plan has caused us to lose much of the forest in the Meadows\, there are still many beneficial trees to accompany us as we walk. \nWhy do I need a guide? \nWhile it’s true that no one needs a guide to benefit from a walk in the natural world\, a nature therapy guide can help unlock the door to new connection and intimacy with the environment by facilitating a series of invitations that cultivate presence\, calm\, and profound joy. Guides also create opportunities for people to connect with each other\, to witness and be witnessed in their process of discovery. \nOther things to note: Please let the guide know if you have any allergies or health concerns before the walk.

SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Tariq Trotter - Official Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we welcome Tariq Trotter a.k.a. Black Thought of The Roots as he launches his memoir “The Upcycled Self”\n\n\nUPDATE: \nTariq Trotter will be in conversation with Uncle Bobbie’s very own\, Marc Lamont Hill. In addition\, each ticket will come with a SIGNED COPY of The Upcycled Self!! \nThis event will be taking place at Greene Street Friends School. \n-———– \nFrom one of our generation’s most powerful artists and incisive storytellers comes a brilliantly crafted work about the art—and war—of becoming who we are. \nupcycle verb \nup·cy·cle ˈəp-ˌsī-kəl \n: to recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item \n: to create an object of greater value from (a discarded object of lesser value) \nToday Tariq Trotter—better known as Black Thought—is the platinum-selling\, Grammy-winning co-founder of The Roots and one of the most exhilaratingly skillful and profound rappers our culture has ever produced. But his story begins with a tragedy: as a child\, Trotter burned down his family’s home. The years that follow are the story of a life snatched from the flames\, forged in fire. \nIn The Upcycled Self\, Trotter doesn’t only narrate a riveting and moving portrait of the artist as a young man\, he gives readers a courageous model of what it means to live an examined life. In vivid vignettes\, he tells the dramatic stories of the four powerful relationships that shaped him—with community\, friends\, art\, and family—each a complex weave of love\, discovery\, trauma\, and loss. \nAnd beyond offering the compellingly poetic account of one artist’s creative and emotional origins\, Trotter explores the vital questions we all have to confront about our formative years: How can we see the story of our own young lives clearly? How do we use that story to understand who we’ve become? How do we forgive the people who loved and hurt us? How do we rediscover and honor our first dreams? And\, finally\, what do we take forward\, what do we pass on\, what do we leave behind? This is the beautifully bluesy story of a boy genius’s coming-of-age that illuminates the redemptive power of the upcycle. \nEach ticket comes with a copy of The Upcycled Self. \n… \nDoors open at 5:00pm. \nStreet parking available. \nAll ticket sales are final and non-refundable

Creating with “All Paper” has become a challenge and the driving factor in my work. The words “What If” are a big part of my creative process. My intent is to see what I can create and what stories I can tell using the wonderfully simplistic elements of paper. On my journey from Corporate America to creating with paper\, I’ve found what I believe to be my life’s work. It grows and evolves with each piece. It’s been a test of my Faith\, Endurance and Belief\, not to mention\, a whole lot of Prayers that has brought me to this moment. I can’t imagine my life now without doing this work. “There’s magic in the smallest things in life…. For me\, it’s in the bits and pieces of paper.” \n[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=”#94AA8B” divider_weight=”2px” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3\,2_3″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://awbury.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Me-Photo-11_23-SM-2.jpg” title_text=”Me Photo 11_23 SM 2″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″ admin_label=”Artist photo”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″ admin_label=”Artist bio”] \nYolanda Ward is an award-winning paper collage artist whose work echo’s themes drawn from Black History and culture. Viewed from a distance\, her images appear to be paintings. However\, upon closer inspection\, they are “painted” with tiny pieces of paper in a laborious process thatstarts with the fabrication of handmade papers\, as well as sourcing vintage paper from around the world. \nPrior to embracing collage\, Ward served as art and creative director of a Fortune 500 Company where she traveled widely and worked with major museums. After studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia College of Art and receiving her certification in print production\, Ward attended paper-making workshops at Abington Art Center and attended Arcadia University in Philadelphia. Later\, she studied with a master paper maker in Umbria\, Italy. Ward makes some of her own paper which she combines with sourced papers to form the foundation for her images. She then adds other mediums and techniques\, including inks\, acrylic paint\, printmaking\, hand- tearing and layering the paper to form visually stunning\, highly textured images. \nWard’s work has appeared in juried exhibitions and received Honorable Mention Award at Woodmere Art Museum’s Annual Show\, Abington Art Center’s Paper Arts Award and a Black Music City Grant in Philadelphia. She has also participated in sold-out\, regional shows. Yolanda’s work is currently represented by E&S Gallery in Louisville Kentucky. \n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2\,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://awbury.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/If-I-Only-Knew-ImageSM.jpg” title_text=”If I Only Knew ImageSM” _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” admin_label=”Artwork image” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.22.2″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″ admin_label=”%22If I Only Knew%22 text”] \n“IF I ONLY KNEW”48” X 60”  •   All Paper Canvas  •  2023 \nA sky was the first artwork I ever put into the world\, it was shown on the nightly news… if I only knew… it was leading me here. SUMMARY:450 Million Years of Novelty and Convergence: History of Plant Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonathan Wilson (Associate Professor of Environmental Studies) for a look into his cutting-edge research!\n\n\n450 Million Years of Novelty and Convergence: A Brief History of Plant Evolution \nThe evolution of land plants transformed the planet: from providing the basis of complex terrestrial ecosystems\, reshaping the physical environment of the Earth’s surface\, to transforming the chemistry of the ocean and atmosphere. The history of plant evolution—preserved in the fossil record—contains a record of these changes and the plants that drove them\, with their surprising morphologies and novel vegetative and reproductive features. In this presentation\, Jonathan will explore the evolutionary history of plants\, from the cryptic origins of the earliest land plants to the rise of extant biomes—while exploring\, along the way\, some of the unusual\, extinct plants that remain enigmatic today. \nJonathan Wilson’s Biography \nPhoto Caption: Main Ridge Forest Reserve in Tobago \nParking for this event is in the Visitor’s Lot and the talk will take place in Lutnick Library room 200.
