DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Chuck Uniatowski\nMeeting at the Rex Avenue Trailhead Kiosk\nJoin Debbie and Jim on our last hike of the winter. This month we’ll be appreciating some of the work done by the FOW in 2024 as we traverse 2 reroutes and walk across the new pedestrian bridge. And we’ll note the beautiful vistas before the trees leaf up in the spring. We’ll pass by some areas of historical and cultural interest and also some beautiful rocks.\nOur route is about 3.5 miles and includes some rocky ascents and descents. Save some energy for the climb up to Rex Avenue at the end.\nChildren 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but\, please\, no dogs except for service animals.\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. SUMMARY:Wildlife Clinic Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:As the only licensed wildlife rehabilitation clinic in the city of Philadelphia\, the Wildlife Clinic at the Schuylkill Center takes in thousands of sick\, injured\, and orphaned animals each year. Our small team of clinic staff relies on the support of dedicated Wildlife Clinic volunteers to care for native small mammals\, birds\, raptors\, reptiles\, and amphibians. Start on your path to become one of our dedicated Wildlife Clinic volunteers in 2025 at one of our five available training sessions!\nVolunteer Training Requirements\nBefore starting work in the clinic\, volunteers must attend a training session\, submit a volunteer waiver and application\, and complete online ethics/safety courses. Clinic support volunteers must be at least 16 years old and work two 4-hour shifts per month. Animal care volunteers have to be at least 18 years old and commit to a weekly 4-hour shift. Further requirements and expectations can be found on our volunteer page and will be covered during the volunteer training sessions.\nAvailable Training Sessions\nIn-person training sessions will be held on February 8\, February 24\, and March 1. Virtual training sessions will be held on February 10 and February 22. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:An introduction to making paper at the Soapbox Community Print Shop & Zine Library.\n\n\nIn this introductory course you will learn the basics of western-style papermaking including sheet forming\, and how to easily modify moulds to create different shaped sheets\, as well as proper studio cleanup. A materials fee covers pre-beaten cotton/abaca pulp\, as well as use of moulds\, deckles\, felts\, and drying system. Students will need to pick up dry paper from the studio the following week. \nPlease note: We require all visitors to the Soapbox wear masks\, regardless of their vaccination status. The instructor reserves the right to ask you to leave if you do not comply. \nAbout the Instructor \nOlivia Caro works in papermaking and book arts to focus on themes of identity and home. They are a teaching artist fellow with ArtistYear\, and have assisted with and taught workshops at the Soapbox\, Penland School of Crafts\, Atlanta Printmakers Studio\, the Dallas GA Public Library\, and Grinnell College. \nCost \n$40 for Current Members of the Soapbox/$45 for Non-Members \nPlus a $15 materials fee that covers pre-beaten cotton/abaca pulp and use of our equipment.

DESCRIPTION:Welsh Road Library will host Minas for a small music program. \nMinas introduces students to the country of Brazil through its music\, Samba and Bossa Nova. After performing examples of Brazilian music and presenting historic\, geographical and educational references\, they introduce Brazil’s famous festival Carnaval\, demonstrating authentic Brazilian percussion instruments – surdo\, tamborim\, repinique\, agogô\, reco-reco\, ganzá\, pandeiro\, and cuíca. Participation is enhanced by engaging students to sing in Portuguese (the language of Brazil)\, scat\, and play Brazilian samba percussion (instruments supplied). Students learn while being engaged and having fun.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Ruth Ben-Ghiat for a conversation on the role that media must play in keeping democracy alive and well.\n\n\nIf 2024 was the year of democracy—a year that saw more people worldwide heading to the polls than ever before—then what is in store for 2025? Early returns are worrisome: political repression continues to throttle civil society movements while global media struggles to keep pace with rampant information manipulation and propaganda. In many places autocratic leaders are tightening their grip on power and democratic backsliding seems to be on the rise globally. Join Perry World House as we welcome Ruth Ben-Ghiat\, an expert on fascism and authoritarian movements\, who will talk about our current global political moment in history\, how it echoes with authoritarianism of the past\, and the critical role media must play in order to keep democracy alive and well. \n\n\nSPEAKER\n \nRuth Ben-Ghiat is Professor of History and Italian Studies at New York University. She writes about authoritarianism\, propaganda\, and democracy protection. Cuba Center natural lands on Three Thursdays: 2/13\, 2/20\, & 2/27 (Rain Date: Thursday\, March 6).\nAbout the Instructor:\nEileen Hazard\, community outreach coordinator at Mt. DESCRIPTION:Building Ghosts: Past Lives and Lost Places in a Changing City (Temple University Press\, 2024) and the ghosts that reveal new truths.\n\n\n“Building ghosts” are the idiosyncratic remnants or imprints of demolished buildings\, left behind on the sides of neighboring structures. Mostly seen in older Northeastern cities with rowhomes or party-wall adjacencies\, they can reveal remarkable things\, such as an old staircase going up the side of a building or plaster traces left by a set of shelves in an attic gable. As history in our changing cities is erased and remade\, these ghosts can be ephemeral or enduring. They can be quickly revealed and replaced in a neighborhood seeing rapid change or unveiled and never re-covered in a neighborhood that has not seen new construction in a long time. For this event\, author Molly Lester and photographer Michael Bixler will discuss their new book\, Building Ghosts: Past Lives and Lost Places in a Changing City (Temple University Press\, November 2024) and the ghosts that reveal new truths and provocations about the changing city. \n \nThis event will be held at the Center for Design Philadelphia\, 1218 Arch Street\, Philadelphia PA 19107. \n \nRegistration is not required for in-person events\, however it is helpful for our planning.
