SUMMARY:Artists in Conversation: Mel Edwards with Curlee R. Holton
DESCRIPTION:Archives offer endless inspiration for artists’ work. Hear from two who have collaborated on a new print based in HSP’s collection.\n\n\nArtist Mel Edwards has drawn inspiration from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s collections. In collaboration with Raven Fine Art Editions\, Edwards has created Vision and Purpose I\, II\, III\, and IV\, a serigraph art print. In creating the work\, Edwards made use of HSP’s collections related to Father Divine (1877-1965)\, a religious leader and founder of the International Peace Mission. Join us as Raven founder and artist Curlee R. Holton discusses the project with Edwards\, sharing insights on how contemporary artists give relevancy and new meaning to the archival materials. \nRead more about the artist-in-residency program here. \nVision and Purpose I\, II\, III\, and IV will be on view and will be available for purchase and the artist will be signing the works. Collections related to Father Divine will also be displayed during the event. \nThis event is offered in a hybrid format. The audience may join the artists at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania at 1300 Locust Street in Philadelphia\, or via Zoom webinar. \nThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania gratefully acknowledges the support of Raven Fine Art Editions for this program and project. All print purchases support HSP’s mission of making history relevant and exhilating to all. \n\n\nSpeakers’ Bios: \nMel Edwards is a celebrated abstract steel metal sculptor based in Baltimore\, Maryland\, and upstate New York. His work has been the subject of over a dozen one-person exhibits and has been included in over 50 group shows. Characterized by the use of straight-edged triangular and rectilinear forms\, his art often has a political context. His work is featured in many prominent museum collections nationally and internationally. \nCurlee Raven Holton is the Founding Director and Master Printer at Raven Fine Art Editions. Holton is a highly regarded and award-winning artist\, printmaker\, and professor. Previously\, he served as the founding director of The Experimental Printmaking Institute at Lafayette College. Holton received an MFA with a concentration in Printmaking from Kent State University after receiving a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Cleveland Institute of Fine Arts. In 2015 he received the Anyone Can Fly Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for expanding the appreciation of fine art printmaking. Renowned artist Faith Ringgold presented this award to Holton. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Art and Philosophy from the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) in 2018. \n\n\n\nThe Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, founded in 1824\, is one of the nation’s largest archives of historical documents. We are proud to serve as Philadelphia’s Library of American History\, with over 21 million manuscripts\, books\, and graphic images encompassing centuries of US history. Through educator workshops\, research opportunities\, public programs\, and lectures throughout the year\, we strive to make history relevant and exhilarating to all. SUMMARY:A World Without Nukes? How a Treaty Seeks to Ban All Nuclear Weapons
DESCRIPTION:A discussion on the goals of the Treaty to Ban Nuclear Weapons\, and if it is possible to eradicate nuclear weapons from our world.\n\n\nCan countries around the globe band together to ban nuclear weapons? That is the goal of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, an international treaty that outlaws nuclear armaments. Since its entry into force in 2021\, 65 states have ratified the agreement\, and it has become a touchpoint around which countries without nuclear arsenals are working to drive new norms. No nuclear powers have agreed to sign onto the treaty and destroy their nuclear arsenals to date. In fact\, the nuclear great powers—China\, Russia\, and the United States—are modernizing their arsenals. Some European countries and US allies have curtailed the US’s ability to transport nuclear weapons on their territory as a result of the treaty’s adoption.\n \n \n \nWhat did it take to negotiate a treaty that bans the weapons underwriting global (in)security and great power competition? Can states without nuclear might ever really set the global security agenda\, and if so\, what role might this treaty play? What will it take to completely eradicate nuclear weapons from the planet? What is an achievable goal for the future of the TPNW? \n \n \n \nJoin Perry World House for its 2023 Global Order Colloquium on A New Age of Nuclearity? Great Powers and Greater Consequences\, where Elayne Whyte Gómez\, the first President of the TPNW negotiations and Costa Rica’s former ambassador to the United Nations Geneva Headquarters\, will discuss the past\, present\, and future of the TPNW. \n\n\nSPEAKER\nElayne G. Whyte is a Professor of Practice at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies -SAIS- and a renowned diplomat from Costa Rica\, with special experience in the fields of security\, human rights\, regional integration and global governance. She is the former Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica   and was the first woman\, and the first person of African descent\, to hold this office.  She served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations. In 2017 she was President of the United Nations Conference involving 124 states that negotiated and adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, which entered into force in 2021.     \nMODERATOR\nClay Risen\, a reporter for the New York Times\, is the author of several books on US history\, including\, most recently\, The Crowded Hour: Theodore Roosevelt\, The Rough Riders and the Dawn of the American Century\, a finalist for the Gilder-Lehrman Prize in Military History. Previously at the Times\, he worked as a senior politics editor and deputy Opinion editor\, and before that as the founding managing editor of Democracy: A Journal of Ideas and an assistant editor at the New Republic. His other books include A Nation on Fire: America in the Wake of the King Assassination and the forthcoming Red Scare: Blacklists\, McCarthyism and the Making of Modern America. He has an undergraduate degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a master’s degree in social science from the University of Chicago. \nINTRODUCTION BY\nDean Antonia M. Villarruel is the Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. Villarruel leads a world-renowned faculty to advance science\, demonstrate practice excellence\, and prepare leaders in the discipline of nursing—all through her extraordinary lens as a first-generation college graduate and daughter of an immigrant\, an innovative nurse-researcher\, the first—and to date only—Latina nurse inducted as a National Academy of Medicine member\, and one of the few Latina nursing deans in the United States\, not to mention the only Latina nursing dean at an Ivy League school.

Participants may be eligible to receive a stipend and up to 30 hours of Act 48.\nAll assignments and surveys\, with the exception of the post-implementation survey\, must be submitted by November 22\, 2023 to be eligible for stipend payment. The post-implementation survey must be completed before distribution of Act 48 hours.\nRegistration closes on Friday\, September 1\, 2023. Enrollment will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis; space is limited. Confirmation\, prerequisite assignments\, and course site login information will be sent on or before September 16\, 2023.\nRegister Now\nHave you been searching for the missing link that helps bridge the gap between delivering environmental content and developing environmental literacy? Do you want to help your students understand their connections to their local environment but are limited by established curriculum sequences? Have COVID-19 restrictions on classroom and lab experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations using the environment as an integrative concept? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you!\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies to explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena\, such as environmental issues\, has been demonstrated as a highly effective method for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels.\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators. \nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to: \nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental or environmental justice issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\nInvestigate environmental or environmental justice issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\nProgram Details\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices.\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments. Participants are required to do the following to be eligible for the stipend and the full allotment of Act 48 credit hours:\nComplete the entire professional development sequence. \nComplete and submit all course assignments.\nComplete the pre-course\, post-course\, and post-classroom implementation surveys.\nDesign and implement an inquiry-based unit plan which utilizes select GIS tools within the first eight weeks of the 2023–2024 school year.\nQuestions? Contact Tamara Peffer\, tpeffer@pa.gov\, 717-772-0842.

SUMMARY:PARK AFTER DARK: Moonwalk & Stargazing Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moonlit hike and telescope observation! \n\n\nDATE\nTuesday\, November 28\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n6:30pm – 8:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nLemon Hill Mansion\nLemon Hill Drive\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19130 \n\n\n\nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a two-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation on November 28 from 6:30–8:30 PM. According to the Farmers Almanac\, November’s moon is called the “Beaver Moon” because it signals the time when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges before the long winter ahead. Native American tribes have also referred to it as the “Digging Moon”\, “Deer Rutting Moon”\, and “Whitefish Moon”. \nFirst\, we’ll use the moonlight to guide us on a short hike on the Lemon Hill Rim Trail\, appreciating nature lit by the glowing moon. Next\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nEstimated distance: 2 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: combination of flat open parkland and hilly trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences. \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThis hike is roughly two miles in length over a combination of open parkland and hilly terrain (easy-moderate exertion).\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 6 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are no nearby bathrooms so please plan accordingly.\nWe will leave a few minutes after the scheduled start time. Please arrive at the departure location at least five minutes early. We cannot guarantee that latecomers can join after the group has departed.\nAttendees are encouraged to bring their own telescopes or high-powered binoculars.\nFriendly dogs on leash are welcome.\nWe will use moonlight whenever possible\, but for portions of the trail\, we recommend bringing a flashlight\, headlamp\, or fully charged smartphone.\nFeel free to bring blankets/lawn chairs for the telescope observation portion.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, NEVER leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stops are at 31st and Girard Ave and Art Museum Drive – both are a 1/2 mile walk from the start. The nearest Indego bike station is at 31st and Girard – also a 1/2 mile from the start. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n\n\n\n
