SUMMARY:Discover Strawberry Mansion: Neighborhood and East Park
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the past\, present and future of Strawberry Mansion and nearby East Park. \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, October 22\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n10:00am – 12:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nBoxers’ Trail Gateway\n3336 W. Dauphin Drive\nPhiladelphia\, 19132 \n\n\n\nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Judith Robinson on October 22 from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM for a 2.5-mile walking tour to learn about the past\, present\, and future of Strawberry Mansion and nearby East Park. \nStrawberry Mansion has always had a close connection to the park. In fact\, the neighborhood is named after a prominent place in the park\, Historic Strawberry Mansion. Similar to Parkside on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Strawberry Mansion is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes and apartment buildings facing the park. It’s a neighborhood that has lived many lives through the years\, from its beginnings as an 18th-century rural retreat\, to its 19th-century industrial boom with a proliferation of factories and rowhouses\, to the 20th-century that experienced a demographic shift from a primarily Jewish enclave to an established African-American community. Judith will highlight the neighborhood’s history as a hub of cultural activity – the home to artists such as Henry Ossawa Tanner and Dox Thrash\, musicians such as John Coltrane and Meek Mill\, and community groups such as Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club\, the horse riders who inspired the hit movie Concrete Cowboy. \nThe tour begins with the colonial homes that first defined the area and then visits a variety of important park sites such as the Dell Music Center\, the Medicine Man statue\, the old concession stand\, and the recently installed horseshoe pits. Next\, Judith will lead us down 33rd Street\, East Park’s parkside promenade to see B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue/Cornerstone Baptist Church\, Mander Recreation Center\, and the John Coltrane house. The tour will end at a relatively new addition to the park and neighborhood\, The Discovery Center at the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir. \nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Judith Robinson is a longtime resident\, historic preservationist\, and real estate broker with years of experience as a community advocate and educator. She is a researcher and docent at the Historic Church of the Advocate and is the director of the Strawberry Mansion Civic Association. In 2021\, Judith helped form the Friends of The Henry O. Tanner House\, an all-volunteer group of local African-American preservation advocates who are spearheading efforts to save the North Philadelphia rowhouse of this significant American painter. \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 12 & up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease wear comfortable shoes.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water and snacks (drinking water is not available in the park).\nWell-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome; however\, you will not be able to enter buildings.\nThere are bathrooms (porta-potties) available at the beginning and end of the tour route.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the closest station is at 33rd and Dauphin. The nearest Indego bike station is also at 33rd and Dauphin. \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org \n

SUMMARY:Divine Seeds
DESCRIPTION:Led by Tiny Farm Wagon / part of Teaching at the End of Times\n\n\nDivine Seeds led by Tiny Farm Wagon \nIn her essay\, “Rootedness: The Ancestors as Foundation”\, Writer Toni Morrison argued that because Black people were disregarded\, our ways of knowing were disregarded. Because Black life is often depicted as pathological\, we create rituals to honor the wellness practices inherent in Black culture. Join Tiny Farm Wagon for seed planting and collage activities. We’ll put our hands in the soil\, set intentions\, and create art with quotes from Black self-help/wellness gurus\, and images from Black culture\, Black history\, and nature. \nWater and snacks will be provided during the event and food will be served towards the end of the workshop. \nRead more about Teaching at the End of Times and the workshop leader \nSee the full schedule of related events here

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Our Fragile Moment by Michael Mann
DESCRIPTION:A discussion about Michael Mann’s new book\, Our Fragile Moment: How Lesson’s from Earth’s Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis\n\n\nA rapidly warming climate is driving natural catastrophes. Drought\, fire\, sea level rise\, heatwaves\, flooding\, and storms threaten the wellbeing of people all around the world. As the dangers unfold\, global warming becomes a lived experience\, and it feels too late to act. \nIn his new book\, Our Fragile Moment\, Michael Mann turns this climate doomism on its head by looking to Earth’s history for inspiration. Humanity’s inception\, and some of its greatest innovations\, are the result of large-scale environmental change. He writes about how this era of global warming can hold these same opportunities for creative growth – that is\, if we act now. \nHow can the climate crisis be leveraged to propel humanity forward? Why must we act now\, in this fragile moment? What is stopping us? Join Michael Mann as he answers these critical questions and discusses the premise of his book with Bloomberg Science journalist Faye Flam. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\nMichael E. Mann is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, with a secondary appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication. He is director of the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability\, and the Media. Mann received his undergraduate degrees in Physics and Applied Math from the University of California at Berkeley\, an M.S. degree in Physics from Yale University\, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University. His research interests include the study of Earth’s climate system and the science\, impacts and policy implications of human-caused climate change. \nMann is author of more than 200 peer-reviewed and edited publications\, numerous op-eds and commentaries\, and six books including Dire Predictions: Understanding Climate Change\, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines\, The Madhouse Effect: How Climate Change Denial is Threatening our Planet\, Destroying Our Politics\, and Driving Us Crazy\, The Tantrum that Saved the World\, The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet\, and Our Fragile Moment: How Lessons from Earth’s Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis. \nMODERATOR\nJournalist Faye Flam has been from the rocky fringes of Greenland to the mountaintops of Haiti to the South Pole to capture stories about science and the natural world. She earned a degree in geophysics from the California Institute of Technology\, where she learned about global warming and the need to explain the threat to the general public. She started her science journalism career as an intern for The Economist before becoming a staff writer for Science Magazine covering particle physics and cosmology. Her desire to reach the wider public brought her to the Philadelphia Inquirer where she covered science and created a weekly column about evolution. She’s currently a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion\, where she’s able to add critical evaluation and context to scientific advances. In 2020 she won a Pulliam fellowship from the Society for Professional Journalists\, which came with a grant she used to create a podcast called Follow the Science. The weekly episodes examined the pandemic and posed questions about what to believe in a world where so much that’s labelled “science” is either pseudoscientific\, fraudulent\, distorted by the media or just plain wrong.

SUMMARY:WORLD PREMIERE: Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle
DESCRIPTION:The Strides Collective Presents: \nA World Premiere production of Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle \nDirected by Jonathan V. Edmondson\nAssistant Directed by Caitlin Alvarez\nHonorary Producer: Lauren Hughes \nFeaturing:\nA – Eliza Waterman\nZ – MJ Santry \nWednesday\, October 25 – Sunday\, October 29\, 2023\, at the Community Education Center (3500 Lancaster Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104). Sister of Mine runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. \nAbout the Play: A and Z\, former childhood friends recovering from compulsory heterosexuality\, imagine a series of encounters in which they unexpectedly reunite after substantial time apart\, exposing longings\, secrets\, and betrayals. A love letter to the intricacy of first queer friendship\, Sister of Mine is a meditation on the queer experience of searching for an identity within a world that both imposes and resists categorization. \nAbout the Playwright: A queer writer and artist from rural Montana\, Kate is deeply interested in stories that wrestle with the seemingly impossible – those that examine queer bodies\, experience\, and pleasure\, interrogate rape culture and gendered violence\, and revel in the spaces between social categories and within ordinary life. Her first play M\, developed through the Tennessee Playwrights Studio fellowship program in 2022\, examines what it is to document a queer woman’s life and longings\, on the page and on the screen. Sister of Mine will be her first formally produced piece. \nKate holds a B.A. in English from Princeton University and M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Boston University\, and her short fiction and personal essays have appeared or are forthcoming in The Whitefish Review\, Five Points\, Passages North\, and The North American Review; her essay “Passive Voice\,” which examines the language of rape\, was the recipient of the 2021 Terry Tempest Williams Prize in Creative Nonfiction and named a Notable Essay in the Best American Essays 2022. She is an active collaborator within The Pipeline Collective\, which first led her to playwriting\, and author behind the playful Substack Bardette\, which examines daily queer encounters. \nAbout The Strides Collective: Founded in 2020\, The Strides Collective is a nonprofit queer theatre company in Philadelphia that produces and develops theatrical work by emerging playwrights that embraces the queer experience through authentic\, modern\, and innovative storytelling. SUMMARY:Material Time - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on October 25 at Park Towne Place for an opening reception and artist remarks in the North\, West\, and South Tower galleries.\n\n\nWe will start in the North Tower gallery and move on to the West and South Tower Galleries as a group. Each gallery will offer an opportunity to hear remarks from the artists and enjoy hors d’oeuvres. \nAbout the Show: \nInspired by climate systems and the ever-changing landscape\, the five artists of Material Time evaluate and deconstruct patterns and forms found in nature. Working with materials and processes that are both natural and human\, each artist offers ways of being-with environments\, acting as both witnesses and agents of transformation. \nEmploying unfired clay\, soil\, and natural pigments\, artists Rebecca Schultz and Rachel J. Eng source directly from the environment\, engaging the local community and Earth’s geologic history. Reclaimed plastics\, salvaged wood\, and synthetic imitations of nature are repurposed in installations by Jazmyn Crosby\, Jessica Demcsak\, and Natalie Kuenzi\, softening the boundaries between abstraction and representation\, interdependence and survival. \nParticipatory works invite audiences to engage more deeply\, as in Rebecca Schultz’s Timefulness\, created from earth pigments sourced with community members\, or through interactive videos and augmented reality\, encountered amidst a field of artificial turf. \nIn the wake of altered climate systems and human disruption\, Material Time serves as a catalyst for contemplation\, urging individuals to consider their relationship with and their role within an ever-changing environment. \nCuratorial note: After the exhibition\, InLiquid will honor the spirit of this exhibition and the 40 Parallel North Preservation Brigade by making every effort possible to responsibly rehome\, reuse\, and recycle the exhibition design elements of Material Time.
