SUMMARY:Native Alternatives to Invasive Ornamentals
DESCRIPTION:Non-native invasive plants\, like Japanese barberry and English ivy\, damage our environment by invading natural areas and outcompeting native plants. To help stop the spread\, the Delaware state legislature recently passed a law banning the sale of 36 invasive plant species. Join Leah Brooks as she presents beautiful native alternatives to these invasive ornamentals and explains how making these substitutes helps protect our ecosystems. A garden walk to view recommended plants is included.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Friday\, July 19\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nLeah Brooks is the Public Programs Coordinator at Mt. Cuba Center. She has dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Delaware in Environmental Science and Wildlife Ecology. She is a Delaware Master Naturalist and Vice Chair of the Delaware Invasive Species Council. She’s an avid contributor to the Delaware Native Plant Identification and Exchange group on Facebook. Her passion is sharing the joy of nature and native gardening with others.

SUMMARY:Summer @ the Wagner - Friday Afternoon Guided Tours - Rocks & Minerals
DESCRIPTION:Ready for the weekend? Explore the history and collections of the Wagner with a guided tour!\n\n\nSummer Fridays!\nGuided Tour of the Wagner – Rocks & Minerals\nJoin us on Friday afternoons this summer for guided tours of the Wagner – each week will highlight a different part of the collection!\n \nThe Wagner Free Institute of Science is a National Historic Landmark natural history museum\, with more than 100\,000 specimens on display in its historic Exhibition Hall. \nEvery specimen in the collection has its own story to tell. There are smaller stories of how each specimen arrived at the Wagner and larger stories about evolution\, religion\, and humans’ place in the universe. This guided tour offers a special opportunity to learn more about our specimens\, why the exhibit hall is arranged the way it is\, and how our museum reflects social and intellectual histories of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nEach week\, the tour will begin in the Lecture Hall with a presentation on the founding and history of the Wagner\, followed by a guided tour of the museum that will highlight the architecture of the building and some of the specimens on display. This week will feature Rocks & Minerals – the Wagner has one of the largest mineral displays in the region! \nAfter the tour\, you can continue to explore our historic site and museum collections\, including minerals\, fossils\, shells\, insects\, taxidermy birds and mammals. Themed scavenger hunts\, drawing or coloring activities are available to guide you. Stop by our gift shop and pick up a geode to crack open\, polished crystals for your collection\, a vintage tea towel or your own copy of Historic Landmarks of Philadelphia–which features the Wagner! \nThe guided tour runs from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. All ages are welcome but the recommended age is 12 and up. \nTickets are not required to visit the museum but if you’d like to speed up your entry\, sign up HERE. Advance registration for the guided tour reserves your place on the tour. Please register on this page. Sign-up will be available on the day of the tour if space is available. \nGuided tour tickets are $20 for adults\, $15 for members and seniors\, $10 for students. Admission to the museum without a tour is free or a pay-as-you-wish donation. \n\n\n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. The museum opens at 9:30 am. \n• Masks are recommended but not required. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum and food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free and metered parking is available on Bouvier Street and Cecil B. Moore. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nGuided tour tickets: \n$20/adult \n$15/member or senior \n$10/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \n \nImages: an overview of Wagner’s Exhibition Hall by David Graham & a closer up view of the museum displays by Rob Cardillo.

SUMMARY:Video Letter Exchange: A Community of Images (Screening and Performance)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special presentation of a performance and screening celebrating contemporary Japanese video artists with cinéSPEAK. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nCommunity of Images: Japanese Moving Image Artists in the US\, 1960s-1970s is an exhibition that explores experimental moving images created by Japanese artists and their connections to North America. Covering a wide range of practices and themes; including avant-garde film\, performance\, design and healing\, ecology\, expanded cinema\, independent documentary\, music\, race\, feminism\, video art\, community-based video\, technology and communication\, and others\, the project features works and activities that took place in Japan and in the U.S. \nAs part of the public engagement programming for the exhibition\, we will be presenting the 1983 Video Letter\, a remarkable 64-minute compilation exchange of video letters that took place between video artists Shuji Terayama and Shuntaro Tanikawa in the months immediately preceding Terayama’s death. The Video Letter can be thought of as a home video produced by two preeminent poets and interlaid with highly abstract philosophizing\, slightly aberrant behavior\, and occasionally flamboyant visuals. \nIn homage to the original 1983 Video Letter\, CCJ and JASGP commissioned a group of four contemporary video artists to produce a new video letter exchange as part of the Community of Images exhibition. Two of the artists are U.S.-based (Nadia Hironaka\, Philadelphia\, and Shinpei Takeda\, San Diego)\, with two others based in Japan (Hikaru Suzuki\, Tokyo and Yu Araki\, Kyoto). \nUnlike the original video\, the videos were anonymized during the exchange that took place between February – May 2024. This screening will be the first world premiere screening.

See you there! \n\n\n\n\nMore about Black Lotus HHC \n \nBlack Lotus Holistic Healing Collective is known for is a space designed for BIPOC healers/practitioners to be centered in the healing in order for them to heal those in the BIPOC community. Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. SUMMARY:Nurture with Nature: Fragrance Walk & Herb Pots
DESCRIPTION:Working with the healing power of plants can help to decrease stress and anxiety\, process grief\, and improve overall well-being. Through activities that combine plant materials with eco-mindfulness and creative tools\, the workshops in this therapeutic horticulture series explore the five senses to support connection with ourselves\, one another\, and the natural environment of Nature’s Sanctuary\, Laurel Hill’s native plant garden and green burial area. Monthly sessions are led by Kate Irvine\, a trained horticulturist and mixed media artist with a certificate in Horticultural Therapy. Participants are invited to attend one\, some\, or all of the sessions. \nFragrance Walk & Herb Pots\nSmell your way through Nature’s Sanctuary with an invitation to notice and investigate scents that resonate and evoke memories. Then\, design terracotta pots with dried and pressed plant materials\, which we’ll fill with aromatic clippings as we learn more about why plants omit certain odors as well as about the relationship between smell and memory. \n(Rescheduled from June) \n\nWHEN\nSunday\, July 21\, 2024\n3:00 pm – 5:00 pm \n\nWHERE\nLaurel Hill West\nNature’s Sanctuary

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: How We're Watched
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “How We’re Watched\,” on the long history and chilling future of the surveillance of faces and bodies\, with Sharrona Pearl\, associate professor of bioethics and history at Drexel University and author of Do I Know You? From Face Blindness to Superrecognition. \nMany of us associate facial recognition technology with sci fi depictions of a dystopian future. The reality\, however\, is that technology intended to track our faces and bodies has already been with us for a very long time. \nLearn about the fascinating and fraught history of biometric surveillance\, and where it might be headed\, with Professor Sharrona Pearl\, historian and theorist of the face and body whose other books include Face/On: Face Transplants and the Ethics of the Other and About Faces: Physiognomy in Nineteenth-Century Britain. \nWe’ll look back at the analogue precursors to today’s digital surveillance tools. You’ll learn about physiognomy\, which involved “reading” facial features to learn about character\, as well about the development and use of fingerprinting. You’ll be introduced to figures such as Alphonse Bertillon\, the French police officer and biometric researcher who developed the first scientific system that used measurements of body parts to track criminals and later played a key role in standardizing the use of mug shots. You’ll learn how the chief East German border guard at Checkpoint Charlie\, the busiest border between East German and West Germany during the Cold War\, developed an analogue system of face recognition technology to prevent people from sneaking across the border. \nFocusing on the present\, Professor Pearl will talk about current facial recognition technology and how a dramatic decline in the number of false positives made through it should not be interpreted as meaning it has improved. She’ll discuss how we should be concerned about how much our privacy is being eroded as increasingly effective and accurate surveillance technology tracks people across time and space. You’ll learn about the deep biases embedded in the tracking of people by their physical features. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage: From an illustration of a facial recognition system by Basem Assiri and Alamgir Hossain (Creative Commons).
