SUMMARY:The Time Bandit Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:“The Time Bandit of the 7th Ward\,” Is a Tribute to Philly’s Black History & New Myths of The Afrofuture.\n\n\nLegacy Reclaimed celebrates the launch of Li Sumpter’s “The Time Bandit of The 7th Ward.” \nFriday\, December 1 | Starting at 5PM\nRex at the Royal\, located at 1524 South Street\n \nJoin us for happy hour or make a dinner reservation and enjoy DJ John Morrison and live performances throughout the night. \nPortraits by Ken McFarlane will be taken in the Mezzanine from 5PM-7PM. \n— \n“Time Bandit of the 7th Ward” will feature a “fictional artifact” from Illadelph Dreams: 2045\, Sumpter’s latest chapter of the transmedia narrative Graffiti in the Grass. The artifact takes the form of a fully functioning 1910 Bell Mills vintage slot machine running on 5-cent nickels and its original century-old machinery but playing with a set of 6 new symbols. Sumpter designed these symbols to reflect the rich black history of Philadelphia’s 7th Ward\, her own family legacy\, and the archetypes and iconography of Illadelph Dreams: 2045. Time Bandit is designed to blur the lines between art and artifact\, history and myth\, the past\, and the speculative future.

SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity – Opening Reception: A closer look by Gerri Spilka
DESCRIPTION:FRIEDAcommunity is proud to announce the show A closer look by Gerri Spilka.\nJoin us and the artist on Friday\, December 1\, First Friday\, during the opening reception from 6pm to 8pm.\nGerri Spilka considers herself to be an alchemist who takes ordinary pieces of cotton and transforms them into larger-than-life shapes of glorious\, luminous colors. Her work fuses seemingly disparate elements: modern figurative abstraction\, the grittiness of urban life\, and decades of observing people. She uses these elements to re-imagine traditional quilts\, making them into visual stories on the human experience.\nGerri’s work has been widely exhibited in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe. It is held in private and public collections\, including the International Quilt Museum (Lincoln\, NE)\, as well as Park Towne Place Art Collection and Temple University’s Fox School of Business (both in Philadelphia\, PA).\n100% of the sale proceeds of any artwork during the exhibition go to the artist. In return\, we have asked that selected artists schedule time to engage with our community through a workshop\, a demonstration\, or a discussion.\nDate: Friday\, December 1\n6:00 pm – 8:00 pm\nMask recommended during this event. \nFor more information and to sign up\, please visit https://frieda.community/programs/gerri-spilka-opening-reception-12-1-23/

SUMMARY:Exhibition and Artist's Talk: Before the Plate: Andrew DeCaen
DESCRIPTION:Holy Family University Art Gallery\nEducation and Technology Center (first floor)\n9801 Frankford Avenue\nPhiladelphia\, Pa 19114\nhttps://holyfamilyartgallery.wordpress.com/\nGallery Hours: 7:30am-5pm\nExhibition Dates: 11/15/23 – 12/4/23\nReception and Artist’s Gallery Talk: Wednesday 11/29\, Noon\nEntrance: Free and open to the public\nContact (gallery Info): Professor Pamela Flynn\, Gallery Director\, pflynn12@holyfamily.edu\nContact (artist): Andrew DeCaen\, andrew@andrewdecaen.com\nPhiladelphia\, PA\, Holy Family University is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of artworks by Andrew DeCaen. The exhibition will include flat and sculptural works on paper using lithography\, screen-printing\, laser-etched and folded paper. The work will be on view from November eleventh to December fourth at the Holy Family University Art Gallery on the first floor of the Education and Technology Center. The artist will be present for a reception and gallery talk on Wednesday 11/29 at Noon. \nEXHIBITION STATEMENT: Before the Plate\nWhy are rituals surrounding a meal so important to all cultures? What does it mean to share a meal with someone? How does this mundane experience shape our lives? This exhibition explores visual metaphors surrounding the psychology of a meal. Andrew DeCaen’s flat and sculptural works on paper depict varied situational meal scenes that ask open-ended questions about fellowship\, community\, influence\, longing\, and instinct. They explore the space and experience of being before the plate.\nThis exhibition explores Andrew DeCaen’s continuing themes of rituals surrounding food. The imagery slows down mundane experiences to linger in the smallest moments. These artworks use the theme of eating as a metaphor to explore the concept of the individual in relation to others and to community. The works use printmaking’s natural layering techniques to explore simultaneous space and time and the processes of learning\, remembering\, and forgetting. These images explore the intimacy of familiar experiences while asking fundamental questions about who we are. \nDecaen’s Blue Plans series and Gathering series are featured prominently in the exhibition. The Blue Plans series employ blue lines as a way of connecting to both the analytical side of planning and the emotional side of accepting imperfect realities. There are references to architectural schematics\, exploded diagrams\, and isometric drawings contrasted by figures inhabiting those theoretical spaces. Among the Blue Plans series\, a paper sculpture called Handle Burn mimics the form of a perforated oven mitt. The Gathering series includes a group of nearly identical prints depicting an extended family meal. Each variation removes different people from the table to suggest shifted family dynamics of those present and those missing. A sculptural piece called Inevitable Object depicts the same imagery on the surface of a holiday party “popper” set on a plate with utensils. \nBIO STATEMENT:\nAndrew DeCaen’s artworks use drawing\, printmaking\, and sculpture to examine rituals and habits surrounding the space\, time\, and ways we eat\, prepare\, and acquire our meals. DeCaen grew up in southern California\, received a BA from the University of Dallas and an MFA from the University of South Dakota. His artworks have been shown broadly in the US and internationally in Argentina\, Brazil\, Bulgaria\, Canada\, China\, Columbia\, Denmark\, England\, Finland\, Italy\, Japan\, Korea\, Romania\, Sweden\, and Turkey. DeCaen’s artworks have been featured in publications as Drawing magazine\, Printmaking Today\, and 500 Paper Objects. DeCaen lives and works in Denton\, Texas where he is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of North Texas.\nwww.andrewdecaen.com

Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc
