It’s easy to learn\, fun to do\, and a safe way to help out.\n\n\nFABSCRAP Philly needs your help to save designer textiles from landfill! Volunteers will sort through fabric samples and swatches\, separating fabric from paper headers and folding large\, usable fabric to be saved for reuse. \nWhen registering\, choose: \n\nFirst Time Volunteer Sorter if this is your first time volunteering with us\nReturn Volunteer Sorter if you’ve sorted with us before\nSorter: Research Project if you want to help us complete a survey while sorting that will be used as part of a research project on textile waste. Good for volunteers who have sorted before. \n\nNote: If you choose to donate\, please make sure that you also choose a sorter ticket. \nFABSCRAP Philly is committed to keeping our volunteers\, community\, and team safe: \n\nAll visitors are encouraged to wear a mask in the FABSCRAP warehouse.\nVolunteer stations are comfortably spaced apart for individual use (unless you opt to share with a friend)\nCleaning and sanitizing of volunteer stations and frequently touched surfaces will take place between all volunteer sessions.\nThe FABSCRAP team will be wearing masks.\nHand sanitizer is available.\nWe ask that volunteers cancel their session and stay home if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms including fever\, cough\, and/or gastrointestinal issues (see additional info from the CDC). When you sign up\, please consider donating to keep us operational as a sustainable resource – FABSCRAP is the only option available for the fashion industry to recycle and redistribute unused material\, and the most accessible way for consumers to find saved-from-landfill fabric\, trim\, leather\, and yarn. \nWant to get more involved? We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! SUMMARY:Kingsessing Community Greening Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Only 30 residents will be chosen: must register & COMMIT TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL 3 workshops: July 19th\, Aug 2nd\, & Aug 16th\, 5PM-7PM per date\n\n\nPlease join us in developing a community-led Green Vision Plan for Kingsessing. Your neighborhood has been selected to install a green demonstration project\, which this community-led plan will determine. Collaborate on creating the types of green that will best support your community. \nWe are sponsoring a three-part workshop series to co-create the Green Vision Plan. Recognizing your service to the community\, YOU ARE INVITED to apply. Thirty applicants who agree to attend all workshops will be selected. Those selected will receive $225 for their participation. Workshops will include a light dinner\, with transportation available and reimbursement for childcare costs as needed. \nRegistration closes at midnight July 17th or sooner based on response to this announcement. If you are interested\, apply ASAP. \n \nThe Kingsessing Community Greening Workshops is a three-part series involving neighborhood\, civic\, and business leaders. As a participant\, you will share information about your neighborhood\, tour select areas that could be future green hubs\, and prioritize projects and locations. This project is not an academic exercise. Resource organizations\, and existing green programs around the city are being mobilized to expand their programs in Kingsessing and additional funding will be sought to make the plan that you and your neighbors produce. \n \nThe workshops include: \n\nWednesday\, July 19th: Kingsessing Planning Workshop: participants will map the locations of all existing greening programs\, vacant lots\, and favored locations where people gather or are otherwise valued by the community.\n\n\nWednesday\, August 2nd: Kingsessing Walkshop: participants will tour locations identified in the June Workshop to determine feasible greening options and potential challenges.\n\n\nWednesday\, August 16th: Kingsessing Green Plan Prioritization Workshop: participants will meet to review\, approve\, and prioritize a draft Green Vision Plan for Kingsessing.\n\n \nThe Kingsessing Community Workshops are sponsored by Clean Water Action and Hinge Collective\, team members of the Resilient Community Stormwater Initiative. \nThe Resilient Communities Stormwater Initiative (RSCI)\, seeks to manage stormwater and advance other community greening goals in historically underserved neighborhoods using the approach known as green stormwater infrastructure – or GSI. When thoughtfully designed\, GSI can reduce flooding and pollution caused by stormwater runoff\, increase neighborhood green space\, and contribute to other climate-resilient community benefits. \nDuring the past eighteen months\, the project has engaged residents in ten of Philadelphia’s least-served neighborhoods to identify what greening means to each neighborhood and the role of green infrastructure and other climate-resilient projects. The Kingsessing Green Visioning Workshops are the next step in this process. \nThe Resilient Community Stormwater Initiative is funded by the William Penn Foundation. \nOther members of the RCSI team include the Academy of Natural Sciences\, The Nature Conservancy\, Greenprint Partners\, PEER Environmental\, and The Sustainable Water Resource Engineering Lab at Drexel University.

If you have a ticket\, you’re ticket is still valid for this date. If you cannot make It\, you can either email us to request a refund or donate the ticket fee for our future stories and put on more great events like these. \nUPDATE: Due to “very unhealthy” air quality from wildfires in Canada\, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our 15-year Soirée. The safety and well-being of our attendees\, staff\, and community members have always been our utmost priority. \nThe irony is not lost on us: the increasingly severe impacts of climate change are here\, and becoming more evident each day. The air quality alerts and disruptions to our lives are stark reminders of the urgent need for collective action to combat climate change. \n************ \nJoin us in celebrating 15 years of fostering a greener community at our upcoming anniversary event! It’s been an incredible journey\, and we want to express our gratitude to our valued partners\, friends\, and community members who have supported us along the way. \nWe invite you to join us for an evening of camaraderie and natural beauty at Nature’s Sanctuary at Laurel Hill West. SUMMARY:Reception for "Binding Ties" & Meet and Greet with Michelle Marcuse
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, July 19th\, in celebration of Park Towne Place’s Artist In Residence\, Michelle Marcuse!\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, July 19th\, in celebration of Park Towne Place’s Artist In Residence\, Michelle Marcuse! \nDuring her 2023 artist residency at Park Towne Place\, Philadelphia-based artist Michelle Marcuse created a new body of work\, resulting in this exhibition\, aptly titled Binding Ties. Originating from South Africa\, Marcuse’s studio practice investigates the concept of our intricate relationship between identity\, history\, and our shared human experience amidst a “melting pot” of cultures. With an ever-curious exploration\, Marcuse utilized wire\, string\, and raffia to create the included works. Binding Ties pushes the boundaries of her creative practice as she interweaves traditional craft techniques with her aesthetic sensibilities. \nEach meticulously crafted composition serves as a conduit for unearthing the interconnectedness of our humanity. In an era defined by increasing divisions\, Marcuse’s artistic journey reevaluates the importance of art in fostering empathy as she reflects on her own heritage and the power of art to transcend time and place. \nAbout the Artist: \nMichelle Marcuse (South Africa) holds a Bachelor of Design from the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design (Israel)\, a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Tyler School of Art (Philadelphia\, PA\, USA)\, and has additionally studied at The Michaelis School of Art\, University of Cape Town (South Africa). Marcuse has exhibited widely including notable exhibitions with BLAM Projects (Brooklyn\, NY)\, Arte y Amor\, Taller Boricua (NYC)\, and Borderless Caribbean\, The Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance (Miami\, FL)\, and Against Gravity: TECTONICS\, DORAL Contemporary Art Museum (Doral\, FL). Marcuse is active locally\, exhibiting at Grizzly Grizzly\, List Gallery\, the Philadelphia International Airport\, Rowan University\, and Park Towne Place. \nInternationally\, her work was included at the Art Life Foundation in Hong Kong and at the Restart Museum in Hangzhou\, China. Marcuse had a CFEVA fellowship\, she made it to the finalist position for the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation\, and received a nomination for The Pew Fellowship in the Arts. She was co-director of HOUSEGallery from 2010 – 2020. Her work can be found in public and private collections\, including The Philadelphia Museum of Art. She currently works and resides in Fishtown\, Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:14th Annual Paddle with a Purpose
DESCRIPTION:Join the Bucks County Conservation District to help us rid Lake Towhee of invasive species European Water Chestnut!\n\n\nBucks County Conservation District will be hosting the 14th annual Paddle with a Purpose. With Partners from the Bucks County Parks and Recreation Department and Delaware Canal State Park Paddle with a Purpose is an educational volunteer event that brings the community together to work towards a common goal: eradicating Lake Towhee of invasive Water Chestnuts (Trapa natans). \nThis is an event where you can borrow or bring your own watercraft /personal flotation device. A signed liability waiver (Waiver here) is required for participation. We’ll take care of the rest. \n\n\nABOUT\nWater Chestnuts are a non-native species that cover the water’s surface\, forming dense mats that block sunlight and compete with native vegetation for space and nutrients\, disrupting the aquatic food web and habitat structure. First observed in 2009\, this invasive plant spreads rapidly due to multiple means of reproduction – it is an annual plant that primarily spreads by seed\, but it can also reproduce from small plant fragments self-propagating. A single plant can produce up to 20 seedpods\, which can remain viable on a lake bottom for up to 12 years submerged in a lakebed! \nBecause of this\, water chestnut management requires long-term efforts. Bucks County has been fortunate to have been active in mediating water chestnuts in Lake Towhee since 2009 during the prime summer months\, however the county still relies on these annual efforts to keep them at bay and ensure they won’t spread any further. Dormant seeds can be transported by ducks\, geese\, or even float downstream through a river system. If maturing plants are pulled before they have a chance to seed\, this not only helps Lake Towhee\, but keeps all other water systems happy and healthy! \n\n\nEVENT INSTRUCTIONS\nEvent Organizers will provide boat rentals\, refreshments\, and educational tools to each volunteer who registers. As noted\, watercrafts can be borrowed\, or you can bring your own. Each paddler will be given instructions and can paddle anywhere on the lake to uproot these plants\, collect them in trash bags\, and return the bags to event supervisors. This event in an opportunity for locals to meet with environmental officials and take part in positive change you can see in just a few days’ work! Joint efforts will promote a healthy native environment in their community and prolog recreational use of public waterways. If interested\, please register here. Hope to see you there! \nIf there are any questions\, please contact Intern@Bucksccd.org.

SUMMARY:Anthotype Printing with Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:A make-and-take class that combines native plants and an alternative photo technique. No experience necessary!\n\n\nCapture the ephemeral charm of our native plants through the process of anthotype printing. This form of alternative photography takes advantage of the fragility of plant pigments under strong sunlight and is often used to create colorful impressions of foliage and flowers. What better time to try it out than during the longest and sunniest days of the year? While we work under the Green Roof\, we’ll discuss the science behind plant pigmentation and anthotype printing and become better acquainted with the ecologically vital species selected for our artworks. Participants will take home their original anthotype plus a second canvas prepared for a future print. \nThis program is appropriate adults and children 8 years or older. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Please dress for the weather. \nMeet in front of the Farm Barn Orientation Center for check-in. We recommend arriving 10-15 minutes before the start of class. We cannot accommodate late arrivals and the class will depart on time. \nDUKE FARMS PROGRAM GUIDELINES: \nPlease stay home if you are sick. Pre-registration is required\, walk-ins will not be accepted. No refunds and no exchanging or transferring tickets. Please note that each participant must be registered. Unless otherwise noted\, ALL programs at Duke Farms are RAIN or SHINE. \nPlease note that registration to a Saturday program comes with an entry pass.
