SUMMARY:Design in Transit: How City Subways Reveal Urban Identity
DESCRIPTION:Join author David Seltzer as he discusses how the world's subway systems reveal the culture\, history\, and identity of the cities they serve.\n\n\nOn August 12th\, David Seltzer will join DAG for a presentation based on his book\,Transit Tourism: The Iconic Art and Design of 22 Subways Around the World\, released in 2025 by Schiffer Publishing. Transit Tourism consists of travel essays and images on the art\, architecture and design of 22 subway systems located in 18 countries\, giving an underground perspective on the unique character of each of these cities. The premise of the book is that the visual culture of each subway\, metro\, tube or u-bahn—its architecture\, art installations\, vehicles\, map\, logo\, wayfinding\, and even typeface—reflects the distinct personality of the city it serves. \nViewing these systems through the design lens of a “transit tourist\,” one appreciates that subways are not just a means of transport—they are an indelible part of a city’s DNA\, and to understand a city\, you really need to understand its subway. \n \nThis event will be held at the new Village of Industry & Art at 320 S. Broad Street. \nRegistration is not required for in-person events\, however it is helpful for our planning. Light refreshments will be served. \n \nFor more info\, please CLICK HERE!

SUMMARY:"Possession: Body\, Memory\, Home " Gallery at Scribe
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, July 24\, 4 – 6:30 PM \nThis exhibit brings together the work of artists Jihan Thomas\, Efi Green\, and Linda Fernandez in an exhibition exploring healing\, identity\, and self-possession through deeply personal visual language. Across painting\, mixed media\, abstraction\, and symbolism\, the artists transform experiences of grief\, motherhood\, migration\, mental health\, and cultural memory into spaces of reflection and resilience. Rooted in vivid color\, expressive gesture\, and layered storytelling\, Possession considers home not only as a physical place\, but as something carried within the body\, memory\, and spirit. Together\, these works affirm art’s power to hold vulnerability\, transformation\, and collective care in times of uncertainty. \nFREE \nThe exhibition will be on view at Scribe Video Center Monday through Friday\, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM\, from July 24 to September 12. \nThe Gary Smalls Gallery Project at Scribe is curated by Tamara Mason.

SUMMARY:Black Lions - Roman Wolves
DESCRIPTION:BlackStar Film Festival’s closing night film! \nIn his highly anticipated opus Black Lions — Roman Wolves\, legendary filmmaker Haile Gerima unfolds a vast\, thunderous meditation on resistance\, memory and sovereignty. An Official Selection of Berlinale Forum 2026\, this latest work stretches across five parts in an unparalleled cinematic experience. Returning to Ethiopia’s extraordinary victory against Italy’s second invasion in 1935\, Gerima traces how a people rich in resolve met imperial violence with collective will. This epic documentary reveals a war fought not only with arms\, but with culture itself. Elevating the enduring memories of men and women warriors whose courage still echoes through the land\, Black Lions — Roman Wolves is an act of remembrance that insists the past is not finished speaking. The film stands as a monumental testament to African resistance\, collective authorship and the unbreakable spirit of a nation that refused to kneel.
