SUMMARY:Owl Howl: Section C
DESCRIPTION:Many people have heard an owl\, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred\, great horned\, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture\, we’ll head into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Wednesday\, February 5\, 2025 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, February 12).\nAbout the Instructors:\nJoe Sebastiani is the Director of Adult Engagement for the Delaware Nature Society. He is passionate about birds and wildlife\, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch\, and edits Delaware eBird\, an online checklist program\, for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.\nIan Stewart\, PhD\, was raised in Newcastle\, England and received a doctorate in ornithology from the University of Leicester. He has conducted research on tree swallows and bluebirds and how local land management activities are affecting bird numbers and diversity throughout the year. Ian works for the Delaware Nature Society where he is studying the effects of non-native plants on birds.

SUMMARY:DAG Spotlight: 2300 Market Street by Kieran Timberlake
DESCRIPTION:Join Keiran Timberlake to discuss their project at 2300 Market St.\n\n\nPlease join us for a DAG Spotlight discussion with firm Kieran Timberlake\, who will discuss their exciting science research and discovery building at 2300 Market Street. \n \n2300 Market is a singular new building that spans a century. \nLocated within the last remnants of the historic industrial fabric of Center City Philadelphia’s West Market corridor\, the project is an 8-story\, 225\,000 SF life sciences research and discovery facility developed by Breakthrough Properties. The project embraces adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of an existing brick loft building and reconstruction of an adjoining building’s terracotta facade. The result highlights a collaborative and rigorous civic engagement process\, a model in which the developer\, design team\, and local stakeholders worked together to transform historic structures into civic and economic assets for the future. \nThe existing buildings\, originally built for the Autocar and Locomobile companies\, are complemented by a high-performance vertical addition to accommodate state-of-the-art laboratory spaces\, plus amenities including a cafe\, lounge\, fitness center\, and elevated terraces. The inflected form of the new overbuild was established in dialog with the existing facades\, weaving the historic Philadelphia streetscape with innovative and high performing design. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification and is scheduled for completion in early 2025. \n \nRegistration for virtual events is required to receive login credentials. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A. \n \nThis event will be hosted on Zoom. \n \nFor more information\, click HERE!

SUMMARY:Winterbloom Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the opening of Winterbloom\, a solo gallery exhibition of new works by Claire Downes Whitehurst. The artist will present a talk in the gallery at 2pm. Light refreshments will be served.\nSign up for event reminders and updates in case of inclement weather. Walk-ins welcome!\nSign Up\nAbout Winterbloom\nOn view from February 1 – March 29\, 2025\, Winterbloom is a solo gallery exhibition by Claire Downes Whitehurst at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. During a time of winter dormancy and hibernation in the forest\, this exhibition presents colorful\, visionary abstractions drawn from Whitehurst’s attunement to forms and patterns found in nature.\nWinterbloom is curated by Heather Moqtaderi\, Interim Director of Environmental Art. The exhibition opens with an Artist Reception and Gallery Talk on Saturday February 1\, 2025 from 1pm-3pm. Claire Downes Whitehurst will give an Artist Workshop on Saturday\, March 1 from 1pm-3pm.\nLearn more about Winterbloom\nAbout the Artist:\nClaire Whitehurst is a painter\, printmaker and sculptor. She received her BFA from the University of Mississippi\, and her MFA in Painting from the University of Iowa. She draws from the landscape and atmosphere of the deep South\, exploring queer space\, religious iconography and architecture through form\, color\, and composition. Her work plays with the relationship between image and object.\nIn 2018\, she was the recipient of the Stanley Fellowship for International Research at the University of Iowa. She worked in the Dordogne region of southern France where she studied polychromatic cave paintings and engravings. Her research focused on the relationship between surface and image\, and the compositional complexities of abstract narrative.\nShe has exhibited nationally and internationally\, and a book of her drawings and poetry was published in 2021 through Drum Machine Editions in Asheville\, North Carolina. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including New American Paintings\, Oxford American\, ArtMaze Magazine\, and the Graphite Journal in collaboration with the Hammer Museum along with many others.

SUMMARY:February First Saturday Open House - Once Upon Deep Time
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the evolution of hearing\, with a live musical performance by paleontologist Matthew Bonnan\, and explore deep time in the museum\n\n\nFEBRUARY FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE – Once Upon Deep Time\n \nExplore deep time and evolution at Wagner’s February First Saturday Open House! \nContemplate the nature of time among the museum’s vast fossil collection and learn about the evolution of hearing through a special musical performance by paleontologist Matthew Bonnan. His captivating pop/rock song cycle\, Once Upon Deep Time\, tells the story of how we came to perceive sound based on what is known from the fossil record and the living world around us. Illustrated by animated videos\, Matthew Bonnan and his bandmates will perform a selection of songs in our Lecture Hall at 2pm\, with Q & A to follow. \nDr. Matthew Bonnan is a unique blend of dinosaur paleontologist and singer/songwriter. A professor at Stockton University\, he has co-discovered three new Jurassic dinosaur species and explores how the movement of modern mammals\, reptiles\, and birds sheds light on the locomotion of their prehistoric counterparts. A self-taught musician and producer\, Bonnan has produced two albums\, Once Upon Deep Time and An Ode to Everything\, that explore themes of science and the human connection. \nJoining him for the performance will be Dr. Michael Lague and Dr. Sam Giancarli. Dr. Michael Lague is a paleontologist at Stockton University whose research focuses on the postcranial skeleton of early hominins (humans). Dr. Lague plays bass in the Stockton University rock band Monsters of Academia. Dr. Samantha Giancarli is a post-doc at Drexel University where she studies the evolutionary biology and genomics of urban and rural house mice. A former Stockton University undergrad and mentee of Dr. Bonnan\, she loves singing and music and plays saxophone for the Once Upon Deep Time show. \n \n\n\n\nThe Exhibit Hall will be open for self-guided exploration of the natural history collection throughout the day. Explore our 100\,000 natural history specimens\, including ancient fossils\, glowing minerals and animals from around the globe. Wander at your own pace or follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts. You can also pick up pencils and paper to draw from the specimens on display! \n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• The museum is located on the second floor of the building. There are 5 steps at the entryway and a flight of stairs to access the museum. It is not wheelchair accessible. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum. Open containers of food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free. There is 2-hour free parking on Bouvier Street and on many blocks near the Wagner and metered parking on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The nearest parking garage is at the Liacouras Center on 15th Street and Montgomery Avenue. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is FREE—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11.

SUMMARY:Weathering the Winter
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 1 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm\nWeathering the Winter \nWinters were harsh in the 18th century\, but even in cold and snowy weather there was still plenty of work to do around the farm. Fires had to be built\, food preserved and cooked\, and animals needed tending. Visit the Farmstead on February 1st to watch our living historians demonstrate the types of farm chores a family like the Wentzes would have had to do this time of year. Watch as meat and other provisions are cured and preserved in the Smokehouse\, check out a cooking demonstration in the Summer Kitchen\, and more! \nAll ages; Free.
