SUMMARY:February First Saturday Open House - Once Upon Deep Time
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the evolution of hearing\, with a live musical performance by paleontologist Matthew Bonnan\, and explore deep time in the museum\n\n\nFEBRUARY FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE – Once Upon Deep Time\n \nExplore deep time and evolution at Wagner’s February First Saturday Open House! \nContemplate the nature of time among the museum’s vast fossil collection and learn about the evolution of hearing through a special musical performance by paleontologist Matthew Bonnan. His captivating pop/rock song cycle\, Once Upon Deep Time\, tells the story of how we came to perceive sound based on what is known from the fossil record and the living world around us. Illustrated by animated videos\, Matthew Bonnan and his bandmates will perform a selection of songs in our Lecture Hall at 2pm\, with Q & A to follow. \nDr. Matthew Bonnan is a unique blend of dinosaur paleontologist and singer/songwriter. A professor at Stockton University\, he has co-discovered three new Jurassic dinosaur species and explores how the movement of modern mammals\, reptiles\, and birds sheds light on the locomotion of their prehistoric counterparts. A self-taught musician and producer\, Bonnan has produced two albums\, Once Upon Deep Time and An Ode to Everything\, that explore themes of science and the human connection. \nJoining him for the performance will be Dr. Michael Lague and Dr. Sam Giancarli. Dr. Michael Lague is a paleontologist at Stockton University whose research focuses on the postcranial skeleton of early hominins (humans). Dr. Lague plays bass in the Stockton University rock band Monsters of Academia. Dr. Samantha Giancarli is a post-doc at Drexel University where she studies the evolutionary biology and genomics of urban and rural house mice. A former Stockton University undergrad and mentee of Dr. Bonnan\, she loves singing and music and plays saxophone for the Once Upon Deep Time show. \n \n\n\n\nThe Exhibit Hall will be open for self-guided exploration of the natural history collection throughout the day. Explore our 100\,000 natural history specimens\, including ancient fossils\, glowing minerals and animals from around the globe. Wander at your own pace or follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts. You can also pick up pencils and paper to draw from the specimens on display! \n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• The museum is located on the second floor of the building. There are 5 steps at the entryway and a flight of stairs to access the museum. It is not wheelchair accessible. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum. Open containers of food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free. There is 2-hour free parking on Bouvier Street and on many blocks near the Wagner and metered parking on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The nearest parking garage is at the Liacouras Center on 15th Street and Montgomery Avenue. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is FREE—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11.

SUMMARY:Weathering the Winter
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 1 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm\nWeathering the Winter \nWinters were harsh in the 18th century\, but even in cold and snowy weather there was still plenty of work to do around the farm. Fires had to be built\, food preserved and cooked\, and animals needed tending. Visit the Farmstead on February 1st to watch our living historians demonstrate the types of farm chores a family like the Wentzes would have had to do this time of year. Watch as meat and other provisions are cured and preserved in the Smokehouse\, check out a cooking demonstration in the Summer Kitchen\, and more! \nAll ages; Free.

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. Volunteer Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Stacey Gray\nMeeting at the Blue Bell Field Parking Lot\nThis location will not require hiking to access from the available parking areas.\nPlease note that there will be bathroom access during the service day.\nThis event was rescheduled from MLK Day due to the cold and icy conditions.\nDr. King once said\, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” By volunteering on this day\, we will be giving back to our park\, its users\, the creek\, and the plants and animals that rely on it to live. This year\, we will be completing a variety of projects around Blue Bell Park\, including removing invasive vines and cleaning up litter. This will not only make this area of the park more beautiful\, but it will keep our watershed healthier for all!\nAll are welcome to attend\, and no experience is needed. We encourage attendees to work within their own comfort level\, and we always strive to accommodate needs on an individual basis. With that being said\, this service day may include the following activities:\n• Invasive plant removal: bending over\, using long handled tools\n• Litter clean-up\n• Repetitive motions\nWe provide gloves\, tools\, and instruction–you just need to show up! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and long pants\, and remember to bring water with you. Detailed information and confirmation of the meeting location will be sent by email the day before the event. If you are hoping to bring a group of 5 or more people\, please reach out to us first. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org.\nRegister below!

SUMMARY:Conscious Fashion: Weaving a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 30\, 2025 \n6:00 PM-8:00 PM \nOn Thursday\, January 30\, join us for a Town Square discussion on clothing and where it comes from. \nA cozy sweater to match your jeans\, a new scarf to go with your coat\, a few stylish shirts for the gym and maybe those cute yoga pants — shopping for clothes is fun\, and depending on your tastes\, affordable. But there are bigger costs than the price tag you see at the store. Every item in your closet has gone through many steps in a complex production process\, from harvesting fibers\, dyeing\, and sewing to shipping and sales. And each step for these garments has major environmental consequences. \nWHYY’s Maiken Scott will chat about sustainable fashion with Heidi Barr\, co-founder and CEO of PA Flax Project; Rachel Higgins\, co-founder of PA Fibershed and instructor at Drexel University in the fashion industry and merchandising program; and Kimberly McGlonn\, designer\, CEO of NOOR by Grant Blvd and author. They will talk about their work in the fashion industry and address the challenges we face together in building a local\, more sustainable supply chain. \nRegister for Conscious Fashion: Weaving a Sustainable Future \nThis event is a part of the Academy Town Square Series. Learn more.

SUMMARY:Nature Hour: Sustaining Humans and Nature Together
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this hopeful virtual presentation on creating health for nature and humans!\n\n\nAbout the Presentation\nHow do we reignite the positive synergy between nature and humanity in a world where we so often hear how human action is having an irrevocable impact on the planet? This presentation will discuss how biodiversity continues to sustain our planet and all who inhabit it\, from the farthest reaches of wilderness to our own backyards in the built urban environment. By understanding and acting as better stewards of our relationships with species\, we can and will build a better planet that supports both humans and nature coexisting together. \n \nAbout The Presenter\nDr. Oswald Schmitz is the Oastler Professor of Population and Community Ecology\, in the Yale University School of the Environment. His research aims to make sense of nature’s complexity that comes from interdependencies among the variety of carnivore\, herbivore\, and plant species that coexist within ecosystems. These insights help to inform environmental stewardship to enhance the conservation of wildlife species and ensure the sustainability of ecosystems\, their functions\, and the services that they provide to humankind. At Yale\, he teaches courses on the role of humans in nature and how humans can develop the means to coexist harmoniously with nature. His book “The New Ecology: Rethinking a Science for the Anthropocene” encapsulates much of his thinking about species and ecosystems\, making ecological science accessible to a broader readership. \n \nAbout Nature Hour\nNature Hour is a lecture series presented by Lancaster Conservancy\, taking place throughout the winter. These one-hour virtual lectures\, that include a Q&A with the expert presenter\, cover a wide range of conservation\, environmental\, and nature-related topics impacting our community\, region\, and world for learners of all ages. \nTo see recordings of past Nature Hour lectures\, please visit the Conservancy’s YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LancasterConservancy \n \nThank you to our incredible Annual Sponsors for their generous support!

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Choice
DESCRIPTION:Renowned cultural critic Wendy Steiner offers a dazzling new account of aesthetics grounded in female agency\n\n\nIn The Beauty of Choice\, the renowned cultural critic Wendy Steiner offers a dazzling new account of aesthetics grounded in female agency. Through a series of linked meditations on canonical and contemporary literature and art\, she casts women’s taste as the engine of liberal values. \nSteiner reframes long-standing questions surrounding desire\, art\, sexual assault\, and beauty in light of #MeToo. Beginning with an opera she wrote based on Chaucer’s “The Wife of Bath’s Tale\,” she presents women’s sexual choices as fundamentally aesthetic in nature—expressions of their taste—and artworks as stagings of choice in courtship\, coquetry\, consent\, marriage\, and liberation. A merger of art criticism\, evolutionary theory\, political history\, and aesthetics\, this book paints the struggle between female autonomy and patriarchal violence and extremism as the essence of art. \nFollowing a reading from The Beauty of Choice\, Steiner will sit down with Heather Love\, Penn Professor of English\, to discuss the ways in which taste\, beauty\, and pleasure intersect in defense of women’s freedom. \nA book signing and reception will follow. \nCosponsored by Kelly Writers House and the Department of English. \n––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– \nWendy Steiner is the Richard L. Fisher Professor Emerita of English at the University of Pennsylvania\, past Chair of the Penn English Department\, and Founding Director of the Penn Humanities Forum (now\, the Wolf Humanities Center). Her most recent books are The Beauty of Choice: On Women\, Art\, and Freedom (2024); The Real RealThing: The Model in the Mirror of Art (2010); Venus in Exile: The Rejection of Beauty in Twentieth-Century Art (2001); and The Scandal of Pleasure: Art in an Age of Fundamentalism (listed in the “NY Times 100 Best Books of 1996”). Steiner’s cultural criticism has appeared widely\, and she is a Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation\, NEH\, ACLS\, and Royal Society of Canada. \nSteiner’s six opera libretti have been composed by Paul Richards\, Frances White\, and Mark Rimple. The latest\, using both her text and her photography\, premiered in New York in 2024\, Upon Reflection: An Opera in Ten Images\, starring soprano Sherezade Panthaki and the musicians of Parthenia. Steiner has presented multimedia installations in the 2019 and 2022 Venice Biennales. \nHeather Love\, a Professor in Penn’s English Department\, is the author of Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History (Harvard University Press) and Underdogs: Social Deviance and Queer Theory (University of Chicago Press). She is the editor of a special issue of GLQ on Gayle Rubin (“Rethinking Sex”) and the co-editor (with Stephen Best and Sharon Marcus) of a special issue of Representations (“Description Across Disciplines”). In 2023\, she published Literary Studies and Human Flourishing\, co-edited with James F. English (Oxford University Press). Love has written on topics including comparative social stigma\, compulsory happiness\, transgender fiction\, spinster aesthetics\, and reading methods in literary studies. She is currently working on a new project (“To Be Real\,”) concerning the uses of the personal in queer writing. \nMore information: https://wolfhumanities.upenn.edu/events/steiner \n–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. \nThe Wolf Humanities Center values inclusivity and we aim to create a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds.
