SUMMARY:Sketching and Painting in the Wissahickon with Jean McWilliams and Lisa Kleiman
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Harper’s Meadow\nCome join a group of like-minded enthusiasts for art and nature as we gather in Harper’s Meadow for a “plein air” session. Feel free to bring a chair\, or a portable easel or just a blanket as well as a sketchbook or materials for painting that you can manage in the landscape of our beautiful park. There will be no formal art instruction\, just whatever happens naturally when we bring together those who appreciate nature and are inspired to capture it in some artistic medium. The session will consist of brief introductions\, time for drawing/painting and then coming together to share our work or just our insights into the process of making art in an open air space. No previous drawing or painting experience necessary. Please bring whatever materials you think you might want to use.\n \nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. \nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. SUMMARY:Workshop: Pruning Trees Correctly
DESCRIPTION:Although trees often perform quite well without intervention\, pruning is performed by arborists to address safety issues and to improve structure\, health\, and appearance. Join the Mt. Cuba Arboriculture Team for a discussion of pruning equipment and a demonstration of professional pruning techniques. Students are encouraged to share their own questions about pruning in advance. A portion of the class will be held outside; please dress for the weather.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Wednesday\, May 22\, 2024 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, May 29).\nAbout the Instructors:\nNicole DeLizzio is the Arborist Assistant at the Mt. Cuba Center. In addition to co-teaching the Ecological Arboriculture course with the rest of the arboriculture team\, she can be found sharing her combined passion for trees and art in pyrography\, or the art of woodburning. One of Nicole’s favorite ecological gardening concepts is to allow trees to decay in place\, when it is safe to do so\, to be utilized by wildlife.\nScott Kelley is the Head Arborist at Mt Cuba Center. He is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist. Scott has been working with trees since 1980\, and he joined Mt Cuba Center in 1986.\nWilliam Trescott is the Arboriculture Manager at Mt. Cuba Center. In addition to daily tree care duties\, he is currently involved in Mt. Cuba Center’s tree canopy replacement project and development of best practices for ecological arboriculture.

Our once-a-season\, bicycle-based field trip exploring Philadelphia’s 500 million years of geologic history\, which is all around us yet rarely seen. The tour will cover a round trip distance of approximately 18 miles and there will be several opportunities to shorten the trip if desired. The terrain is generally level with a few small (<30 feet) gradual elevation changes. The entire trip is on paved streets and bicycle paths. \nHelmets are required for the trip (bring your own). Bring your own bike. No bicycle repair support will be provided during the trip. \nA refreshing snack will be provided to participants on the return leg of the trip. \nTrip is limited to 20 participants.
