SUMMARY:Wetlands Bio Blitz!
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an exciting and informative adventure in Bartram’s Garden’s south wetlands! \nWith the help of horticulturalists\, scientists\, and other community members\, you’ll explore a calm coastal wetland that’s teeming with biodiversity\, discovering hidden treasures at every turn. Armed with magnifying glasses\, binoculars\, and field guides\, you’ll learn to identify fascinating flora and fauna\, from wildflowers to elusive bird and insect species. \nWetlands are important habitats that provide a home to various species of plants\, birds\, and insects that can’t thrive in other habitats. As well as being important habitats for plants and animals\, wetlands provide a number of services for the humans that live near them (this means you!). Wetlands are important for helping filter the water that passes through them and eventually makes its way to us. They also act as sponges that absorb excess water and help prevent flooding events that would disrupt the lives of our community members here in the Schuylkill River area. \nBy joining us for this bioblitz event\, you’re not just learning more about the wildlife that surrounds them\, but also about the delicate balancing acts that keep wetland habitats healthy\, while also feeding into the larger body of knowledge of the biodiversity present in Bartram’s Garden. Whether you have experience in the outdoors and species identification or this is your first time stepping into nature\, enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels are welcome to explore our wetland and join us for a fun and educational event! \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Phenology at Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second in a series of hikes focused on the scientific observational method of phenology.\n\n\nPhenology is the study of changes in the natural environment through the seasons and years. Today phenology is a valuable scientific observational method that helps us manage our natural landscapes\, but the practice has been around for hundreds of years! Anyone who loves to spend time observing nature over the seasons can help contribute important information to this new community science project by visiting a local trail regularly and making observations of specific plants\, insects\, and animals we encounter through the year. \nWelsh Mountain Nature Preserve offers the opportunity to observe a mature oak-hickory forest with mountain laurel\, wild azalea\, blueberries\, wildflowers\, birds\, reptiles\, bees\, and other insects. Come walk the trail with us to learn what to look for\, how to record your observations\, and how to contribute your observations to the project. This is the second in a series of hikes – join one hike or do all three! \nAbout Your Presenter\nPeggy Eppig is an environmental historian and dynamic conservation educator who offers a hands-on approach to every theme from deep-time history to 21st century conservation methods and practices. She brings over thirty years of interpretive\, experiential education experience for all who have an interest in saving our nature for this and future generations. Her wilder interests are in ornithology (birds)\, herpetology (reptiles and amphibians)\, silvology (woodlands) and natural history illustration. She is an avid long-distance hiker and enthusiastic bike-packer who shares outdoor adventures with Amos the Coonhound. \nWhere to Meet\nWelsh Mountain Preserve parking area and kiosk \nWhat to Expect\nThis event is recommended for ages 13+ (anyone under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult). We will walk the nearly flat ADA Trail Loop at under 1 mile. The trail is heavily shaded. No restrooms are available at this location. This event will be held rain or shine\, with cancellations for severe weather made at the time of the event. \nWhat to Bring\nWear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Bring a snack and water. Bring binoculars if you have them\, a journal or notebook\, and a pen/pencil.
