SUMMARY:Summer @ the Wagner - Friday Afternoon Guided Tours - Taxidermy
DESCRIPTION:Ready for the weekend? Explore the history and collections of the Wagner with a guided tour!\n\n\nSummer Fridays!\nGuided Tour of the Wagner – History & Science of Taxidermy\nJoin us on Friday afternoons this summer for guided tours of the Wagner – each week will highlight a different part of the collection!\n \nThe Wagner Free Institute of Science is a National Historic Landmark natural history museum\, with more than 100\,000 specimens on display in its historic Exhibition Hall. \nEvery specimen in the collection has its own story to tell. There are smaller stories of how each specimen arrived at the Wagner and larger stories about evolution\, religion\, and humans’ place in the universe. This guided tour offers a special opportunity to learn more about our specimens\, why the exhibit hall is arranged the way it is\, and how our museum reflects social and intellectual histories of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nEach week\, the tour will begin in the Lecture Hall with a presentation on the founding and history of the Wagner\, followed by a guided tour of the museum that will highlight the architecture of the building and some of the specimens on display. This week will focus on the history and science of taxidermy\, including some of our most intriguing specimens. \nAfter the tour\, you can continue to explore our historic site and museum collections\, including minerals\, fossils\, shells\, insects\, taxidermy birds and mammals. Themed scavenger hunts\, drawing or coloring activities are available to guide you. Stop by our gift shop and pick up a geode to crack open\, polished crystals for your collection\, a vintage tea towel or your own copy of Historic Landmarks of Philadelphia–which features the Wagner! \nThe guided tour runs from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. All ages are welcome but the recommended age is 12 and up. \nTickets are not required to visit the museum but if you’d like to speed up your entry\, sign up HERE. Advance registration for the guided tour reserves your place on the tour. Please register on this page. Sign-up will be available on the day of the tour if space is available. \nGuided tour tickets are $20 for adults\, $15 for members and seniors\, $10 for students. Admission to the museum without a tour is free or a pay-as-you-wish donation. \n\n\n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. The museum opens at 9:30 am. \n• Masks are recommended but not required. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum and food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free and metered parking is available on Bouvier Street and Cecil B. Moore. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nGuided tour tickets: \n$20/adult \n$15/member or senior \n$10/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \n \nImages: an overview of Wagner’s Exhibition Hall by David Graham & a closer up view of the museum displays by Rob Cardillo.

Participants will explore exposure compensation\, auto-focus\, metering\, and more\, while mastering important terminology and troubleshooting techniques. This workshop cultivates the skills needed to capture images with your unique artistic flair and is perfect for beginners and seasoned photographers alike. By the end\, you’ll confidently use manual settings to photograph wildlife and diverse subjects\, applicable across various camera types – DSLR\, mirrorless\, bridge\, and superzoom. \nAfter the indoor workshop\, Troy will lead participants on a guided bird walk near Concourse Lake in West Fairmount Park. Concourse Lake was officially dedicated as a Philadelphia Native Plant Park in 2012. With 142 native trees and 503 native shrubs\, the area will serve as the perfect backdrop for spotting birds while also putting into practice newly learned nature photography skills. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Troy Bynum\, owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, is not only an enthusiastic birder but also a passionate wildlife photographer from Philadelphia\, PA. Troy’s work focuses on capturing and showcasing the remarkable colors\, intricate patterns\, and rich textures that are abundant throughout the natural world. In his work\, Troy draws attention to the oftentimes overlooked naturally occurring beauty found in the wild. Troy is on a mission to accentuate and celebrate the inherent magnificence of nature. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nPlease bring your camera*\, your camera’s user manual (if you have it)\, a notepad\, and binoculars if you’d like. *Phones can also be used. Troy will have some binoculars on-hand for those who may need them.\nWe will begin with the photography workshop (roughly 1.5 hours) followed by the hike (roughly one hour).\nThe hike is roughly 1.5 miles in length over a combination of flat sidewalks and grassy areas.\nSince part of this program is held outdoors\, please dress according to weather conditions and wear good hiking shoes (boots/sneakers).\nPlease bring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are bathrooms available during the indoor portion; however\, there are no nearby bathrooms when out on the hike.\nPlease wear/bring sunscreen and bug spray.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the park. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest stop is at Belmont Ave and Belmont Mansion/Fairmount Park Drive – a half-mile walk from the start. The closest Indego bike station is at Parkside and Belmont Ave – also a half-mile walk from the start. \n  \n

Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state.\n \n \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles.\n \n \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus\n \n \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nD IRECTIONS: \n \nB lack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane.
