SUMMARY:Jesse Krimes Mural Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in celebrating artist Jesse’s newest mural\, created in collaboration with the Mural Arts Rec Crew.\n\n\nPlease join us in celebrating artist Jesse’s newest mural\, created in collaboration with the Mural Arts Rec Crew\, part of the Restorative Justice program at Mural Arts Philadelphia. Installed at 990 Spring Garden\, a building owned by Arts + Crafts Holdings and led by longtime Mural Arts supporter Craig Grossman\, this project reflects the power of art as a tool for healing and collaboration. \nThe mural is inspired by Jesse’s Elegy Quilt series and draws directly from a set of hands-on workshops with eight Rec Crew participants. Each participant created their own collage in the style of Jesse’s signature quilts\, and elements from each of those works were thoughtfully woven into the final mural design; resulting in a collective piece that honors individual expression while telling a shared story.

SUMMARY:Houston Playground June Learn to Ride Clinics
DESCRIPTION:1-hour Learn to Ride clinic for youth/adults. Bikes & helmets provided. Bring water\, dress for weather. Closed-toe shoes required.\n\n\nLearn to Ride Clinic\nThis 1-hour Learn to Ride clinic is designed for youth riders who are ready to build confidence\, balance\, and the basic skills needed to ride independently. \nYJR Outdoors provides bikes and helmets for participants\, or riders may bring their own bike if preferred. Our instructors use a calm\, step-by-step approach that breaks learning to ride into small\, manageable skills. The goal is to help each rider feel safe\, supported\, and successful — whether they are brand new to biking or almost ready to pedal on their own. \nWhat We’ll Cover\nHelmet Fit and Safety \nWe’ll begin with a simple safety check focused on helmet fit and comfort. Riders will learn why the buckle matters\, how the straps should sit around the ears and under the chin\, and how the helmet should fit securely on the head without sliding forward\, backward\, or side to side. \nBike Handling Basics \nBefore pedaling\, riders will get comfortable moving and controlling the bike. We’ll practice walking beside the bike — “push it like a shopping cart!” — using two hands\, basic steering\, stopping\, and safely getting on and off the bike. \nBraking and Balance \nRiders will learn how to use the brakes as an “anchor” to stop and stabilize the bike. From there\, we’ll work on balance-bike-style movement\, including pushing\, skating\, and finding balance while gently “fluttering” the handlebars to stay upright. \nGliding Before Pedaling \nOnce riders are comfortable balancing and steering\, we’ll introduce short glides. Gliding helps riders feel what balance on a bike is supposed to feel like before adding the complexity of pedaling. \nGlide to Ride \nAs riders build confidence\, we’ll move toward the first pedals. This may include practicing a strong starting position\, keeping the head up\, using “squash bugs” pressure through the pedals\, and learning the tripod position for starting from a stationary position with one pedal in the power position. \nWhat to Bring / Wear\nPlease bring water and dress for the weather. Riders should wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move easily. \nClosed-toe shoes are required. No Crocs\, sandals\, flip-flops\, or open-toed shoes. \nBikes and helmets are included\, but participants may bring their own properly working bike and helmet if they prefer.

SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Chris Smalls "When The Revolution Comes" Book Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we welcome the co-founder and former president of the Amazon Labor Union\, Chris Smalls\, for the release of his book.\n\n\nDo you like weekends? Only having to work 8 hours in a day? Compensation if you get hurt on the job? \nThere is a long and rich history of people fighting for workers’s rights and as the economy changes and capitalism continues to impact our lives\, that fight continues. \nChris Smalls\, the co-founder and former president of the Amazon Labor Union\, made national headlines when he took on one of the biggest companies in the world to fight for his fellow laborers and now he tells his story with his debut book. \nJoining Chris will be organizer and activist\, Gabe Bryant for an amazing discussion about perseverance\, courage and why it’s so important that we continue to fight for labor rights. \nQ&A to follow the discussion. \nAll copies of When The Revolution Comes\, will be signed. \nDon’t miss this amazing event! \n—– \nAbout the author: \nChris Smalls is the co-founder and former president of the Amazon Labor Union. Under his leadership\, the ALU successfully unionized an Amazon warehouse: a historic victory for workers’ rights in America. A Fortune “40 Under 40” honoree\, he was named to the Time 100 list of the most influential people of 2022\, alongside his fellow union organizer Derrick Palmer. When the Revolution Comes is his first book. \n \nAbout the moderator: \nGabe Bryant is a Philly-based organizer and behavioral health professional\, whose work centers the cultivation of community-based leadership\, dismantling the prison industrial complex\, and bolstering art as a tool for liberation. With over 25 years of experience founding and sustaining organizations serving the masses\, he continues to elevate the work required to uplift freedom dreams\, and mobilize communities toward self-actualization and self-determination. \n \nAbout the book: \nFrom one of the most electric and consequential figures to emerge from the contemporary American labor movement\, the remarkable story of his battle to create the first Amazon union in the U.S. and a powerful call to arms on behalf of the working class \n“With candor and fierce moral clarity\, Chris Smalls takes readers behind the scenes of the most consequential labor uprising in modern history—and it’s one hell of a ride.” —Jessica Bruder\, author of Nomadland \nIn the early days of the COVID pandemic\, warehouse worker Chris Smalls and his colleagues continued showing up as the rest of the world was shutting down. A dedicated and experienced Amazon employee\, increasingly frustrated by the inner workings of the retail giant\, Smalls had already felt himself reaching a breaking point. So when coworkers around him began falling ill\, and with no transparency or assurances of safety coming from those in charge\, he made the only choice left available to him. He staged a walkout with friend Derrick Palmer\, eventually finding himself on the picket line without a job. But what began as a demand to keep essential employees safe in a crisis would grow into a movement devoted to achieving dignity and security for the American wageworker\, sparking a groundswell of organizers at the most notable companies across the nation—including Starbucks\, Trader Joe’s\, and Apple—and leading to lasting change for labor. \nWhen the Revolution Comes is the riveting inside story of how a young Black man from Hackensack\, New Jersey with few to no resources\, led a scrappy band of Staten Island warehouse workers in an improbable fight against Amazon\, the second largest private employer in the United States\, and won. This epic David and Goliath tale follows Smalls from a childhood spent navigating his dad’s stints in and out of prison\, to his years of sacrifice and economic uncertainty as a father of three\, to his ascension as the leader of a new generation’s labor movement. \nA deeply personal and eye-opening account of the creation of the Amazon Labor Union\, When the Revolution Comes offers both a searing exposé of what it’s like to be working class in America and inspiring evidence of what is possible when the overworked\, underpaid\, and disempowered join together\, a movement born in community. \n… \nDoors open at 7:00pm. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance available. \nAll ticket sales are final and non-refundable. \nBags larger than a handbag will not be permitted

SUMMARY:Botanize the Barrens at Nottingham Park Serpentine Barrens
DESCRIPTION:Join Bill McAvoy\, former Delaware State Botanist\, as he explores the ecological importance of the Nottingham Park Serpentine Barrens—an ecological treasure shaped by fire\, geology\, and time. Bill will share how this landscape\, a living botanist laboratory\, has plant communities which have adapted to extreme conditions\, creating a refuge for species that exist in only a few places on Earth. \nIn a virtual meeting on Monday\, 6/1 at 7 PM\, Bill will explain why the serpentine barrens are uncommon in the region. Sites like Nottingham play an important role in preserving the Mid-Atlantic’s ecological diversity. Please bring a water bottle and a snack. A Zoom link for the pre-trip meeting and driving instructions to the site are provided upon registration. Inclement weather date: Wednesday\, 6/3 \nAbout the Instructor:\nWilliam McAvoy is a retired Delaware State Botanist. He extensively studied and published on the flora and habitats of the state. SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Philadelphia: Brain Stories
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Philadelphia presents: “Brain Stories\,” a crash course on the basics of neuroscience interspersed with surprising tales from research in the field\, with Stuart McCaughey\, who teaches courses on neuroanatomy\, neuropharmacology\, and neurological disorders as an assistant professor at the University of Delaware. \nGain insights into how our brains work\, and learn what research tells us about the causes of our behavior and the links between our brains and those of animals\, with brain expert Stuart McCaughey of the University of Delaware. \nUsing an approach that wins him and his courses rave reviews from his university’s students\, Dr. McCaughey will discuss the basic principles of his field and illustrate them by telling remarkable stories related to the history of neuroscience and the workings of the brains of human beings and animals. \nHe’ll start by taking you on a tour of the nervous system\, explaining the functions of its different parts and how various drugs alter neurochemical events. \nWe’ll look at neurological syndromes with bizarre symptoms\, at the results of fascinating science experiments\, and at the unusual effects of psilocybic mushrooms on the brain. \nWe’ll consider some of the many strange questions that have arisen as scientists have pursued their quest to understand how the brain works. Among them: Was the French Revolution triggered by a fungus with psychedelic properties? Does Parkinson’s disease cause a unique body odor? Should you eat your experiments on neural development when you finish collecting data on them? \nYour brain will thank you for bringing it to Philadelphia’s Black Squirrel Club for this talk. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Talk starts at 4:30.) \nImage by Canva.
