SUMMARY:Rittenhouse Town: Making Paper\, Making History
DESCRIPTION:Tour Historic RittenhouseTown and participate in papermaking at America’s first paper mill\n\n\nOn this HC Field Trip\, we visit Historic RittenhouseTown for a tour of the grounds\, including the 1707 Homestead\, 1753 Bake House\, and a papermaking workshop. \nEstablished in 1690 along Paper Mill Run\, a tributary of the Wissahickon Creek\, the Rittenhouse Mill was the first paper mill in British North America. Around it\, bloomed the early industrial community known as Rittenhouse Town. Working with rags from Germantown residents\, the Rittenhouse Mill made paper that was sold to printers in nearby Germantown\, Philadelphia and New York for use in Bibles and newspapers. \nJoin us in walking through the history and process of making paper by hand at Rittenhouse Town. \nMeet at 208 Lincoln Dr\, Philadelphia\, PA 19144. \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? Contact Hidden City project coordinator Alyssa Shea at ashea@hiddencityphila.org.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Shell Bagging Event-October 21st-Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Estuary Week by helping PDE bag oyster shells so that they can used in restoration projects and support clean waters!\n\n\nPartnership for the Delaware Estuary has been collecting oyster shell from Philadelphia restaurants since 2022. Generally\, spent oyster shells go to landfills\, but with our recycling program shells are going back to the Delaware Bay. \nOyster shells are important for baby oysters and the entire aquatic ecosystem. Oysters are ecosystem engineers and a keystone species in the Delaware Bay. These awesome shellfish not only filter our water but oyster reefs are important habitat for lots of local wildlife. By returning oyster shell back to the Delaware Bay we can create habitat for juvenile oysters to settle on. We need to put our recycled oyster shells into bags to use in local living shoreline installations. The process is time consuming\, so we need volunteers like you! It is a little messy and a bit physical\, so be prepared! \nWho: Anyone age 12 or over! (Children under 18 need parental consent prior to participating\, and those under 16 would need a parent present during the event) \nWhat:  Putting recycled oyster shells into bags for use in Delaware Bay shoreline restoration projects. \nWhen: Saturday\, September 23rd\, 9:30am-1:00pm \nWhere: Penrose Ferry Rd Philadelphia\, PA (exact address and directions to follow after registration). \nWhat to Bring: Weather dependent clothing\, close toed shoes\, gloves (if don’t have your own\, we’ll have some available)\, water\, and snacks \n Please contact Leah Morgan (lmorgan@delawareestuary.org) for any additional questions.

SUMMARY:La La Lil Jidar Collective Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 19th\, from 7-9 PM\, for a panel discussion with the La La Lil Jidar Collective\n\n\n Please join us on Thursday October 19th from 7 – 9 pm for a panel discussion featuring the La La Lil Jidar collective. Hear how they built the project collaboratively and their hopes and goals. \nPanelists: Aisha Mershani\, Nora Elmarzouky\, Tracy Chahwan\, Qais Assali (virtual)\, Ahmed Ahmed\, Tara Taraneh\, Yaqeen Yemeni \nThis discussion is in conjunction with the solo exhibitoin La La Lil Jidar: 20 Years Behind the Apartheid Wall in Palestine\, currently on view at the InLiquid Gallery. \nAisha Mershani’s (they/them) photography focuses on the Israel Apartheid Wall\, visually exposing the realities on the ground in Palestine\, reframing the source of violence. For nearly 20 years Mershani has photographed military checkpoints\, popular demonstrations\, house demolitions\, destroyed villages\, and the daily lives of Palestinians living under the violence of the Israeli Apartheid.  Most recently\, in 2022\, Mershani returned to the Occupied West Bank\, finding countless people that were photographed in 2004/2005 to photograph them again\, showing time behind the Wall. \nMershani’s photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries\, multiple publications\, as well as many internet news sites over the years to further the awareness of the ongoing situation on the ground in Palestine. They are also one of the artists in the reference book\, “Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists“. \nAisha Mershani was born in Las Vegas\, Nevada to an American Jewish mother and a Moroccan Muslim father. Mershani holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Redlands in California\, and a Master’s and a Ph.D. degree from the UNESCO program in Peace\, Development Studies\, and Conflict Transformation at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón de la Plana\, Spain. \nTheir work comes from a place of concern about the injustices occurring in the Middle East\, and a commitment to artistically expose these injustices and educate those outside of the region. For Mershani it is vital to view Palestine/Israel beyond US mainstream news framing. The expression of everyday life is the primary objective of their documentary photographic work. \n \nThe InLiquid Gallery is located within the Crane Arts Building which is wheelchair accessible. There is limited accessible parking at the front of the building\, and a ramp leading into the main entrance. The main building door is not automated. Two all-gender bathrooms with multiple stalls are available for use — one with urinals\, one without\, and both with 1–2 wheelchair-accessible stall(s).

SUMMARY:Energy Justice in a Climate-Changing World (Climate & Democracy)
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with BENJAMIN SOVACOOL (Boston University)\, moderated by SANYA CARLEY (Penn Kleinman Center for Energy Policy).\n\n\nHybrid Event: In-person and online. Zoom link sent to registered attendees. \nCLEAN AND RENEWABLE ENERGY\, like that from dirty sources\, requires significant technological infrastructure\, with potentially deep impacts on the wellbeing of surrounding communities and ecosystems. In this conversation\, leading energy justice thinker BENJAMIN SOVACOOL (Boston University) grapples with the economics\, politics\, and environmental tradeoffs of energy production. He considers how and why any energy transition must account for social and multispecies justice. How can we conceptualize energy justice? What does it look like on the ground? And what cross-sector alliances can achieve clean energy transitions without perpetuating dirty energy injustices? Moderated by SANYA CARLEY (Kleinman Center for Energy Policy). \nBENJAMIN SOVACOOL is the Director of the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS) and a Professor in the Department of Earth & Environment. He works as a researcher and consultant on issues pertaining to global energy policy and politics\, energy security\, energy justice\, climate change mitigation\, and climate change adaptation. More specifically\, his research focuses on renewable energy and energy efficiency\, the politics of large-scale energy infrastructure\, designing public policy to improve energy security and access to electricity\, the ethics and justice of energy\, and building adaptive capacity to the consequences of climate change. \nClimate and Democracy is hosted by the Andrea Mitchell Center and Penn Program in Environmental Humanities and sponsored by the Environmental Innovations Initiative.
