SUMMARY:Cemetery Art Tour: The Architecture & Symbolism of Death & Mourning
DESCRIPTION:Historic cemeteries are full of symbolism. Join us as we uncover the meaning behind the symbols! It’s a tour about art & death people! Yes!!\n\n\nHistoric cemeteries are full of symbolism. Mount Vernon is no different. Join us for a comprehensive tour that helps us understand the various meanings behind the symbols. \nThis art and architecture-focused tour will examine in detail many of the fabulous sculptures that grace the cemetery’s blighted grounds. See angels emerging from the vines\, discuss the symbolism behind the various urns and adornments topping MVC’s magnificent obelisks\, and spend some time examining our incomparable Gardel Monument – considered to be the finest cemetery monument in the country! It’s art meets death on Decemeber 7th! \nTour will be lead by cemetery expert Mike Lewandowski. Mike has been giving cemetery tours since 2011. He love sharing stories that convey his knowledge of local history\, our permanent residents\, and cemetery symbolism. \n \nThis tour is sponsored and conducted by members of the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery and is part of MVC’s 2024 Fall Festival Tour Season. \nReminders: \n\nPlease meet at MVC’s main gate. Located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues.\nThe tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather – or costume – we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes.\nIt is essential to arrive on time. If you arrive late\, once the gate is closed and locked\, there is no coming back for you.\nMVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such\, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided to you upon arrival.\nAll visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery’s conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund\, and you will be banned from participating in future MVC public events.

We help to reframe our multi-cultural and multi-linguistic identity narrative through an 8-part programming initiative focused on: arts and culture\, sports\, health\, education\, seniors\, immigration\, business\, climate change\, and natural disaster support. Our diverse\, transformative\, and collaborative community-based organization is driven by progressive ideas\, bold actions\, and a strong foundation of connected organizational grassroots support. \nABOUT THE JAPAN AMERICA SOCIETY OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA: The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP) is a private nonprofit organization that has inspired mutual curiosity\, understanding\, and collaboration between Japan and Philadelphia for more than 30 years through art\, business\, and culture. We operate: Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center hosting over 40\,000 visitors annually; produce the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival with over 30\,000 attendees; present a US-Japan Business and Public Policy Series; and provide Japanese arts\, business\, and cultural educational programming for all ages. \nABOUT THE VENDORS ASSOCIATION OF FDR PARK + THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN MARKET: The Southeast Asian Market in FDR Park is a partnership of the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia\, Vendors’ Association of FDR Park\, and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation’s FDR Park. The Southeast Asian Market in FDR Park is a community of refugees and immigrant members who have called FDR Park their home since the 1980’s. For 35+ years they have cultivated an open community space all their own\, providing a cultural hub for social gatherings\, sharing of ethnic cuisines\, and business opportunities through vending. This unique market is a vending community that has blossomed from the original Lao and Khmer sellers\, expanding to Thai\, Vietnamese\, and Indonesian vendors — each a part of the Southeast Asian refugee and immigrant narrative of Philadelphia\, all finding a haven in FDR Park. Shoppers can enjoy many native cuisine dishes\, culturally specific produce\, plants\, clothing\, and jewelry\, as well as services provided by entrepreneurs speaking multiple languages. \nTICKET PRICES: \n\nDecember 7 and 8: $5 per person (children 12 and under free)\nDecember 14: FREE for all\n\n\nIMPORTANT TICKET NOTES: Tickets are not timed for December 7 and 8 (come anytime between 10 AM–4 PM\, capacity permitting). SUMMARY:Parfleche Painting Workshop with Danielle SeeWalker
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an accessible workshop painting parfleche pieces for earrings or a keychain led by Lakota artist Danielle SeeWalker.\n\n\nAn introductory course led by Húŋkpapȟa Lakȟóta artist and muralist Danielle Seewalker. During this workshop on the 2nd Floor of the Paradigm Arts Building\, attendees will learn about the patterns and techniques used in parfleche painting. At the end of the workshop\, attendees will walk away with custom earrings or a keychain made from parfleche (painted rawhide). \nNo experience is needed. All skill levels are welcome. All materials will be provided. \nThere will be two sessions for the workshops. We are offering early bird pricing to the first 5 people who sign up for each session. \nFirst Session: Saturday\, December 7th · 12:00pm – 2:00pm \nSecond Session: Saturday\, December 7th · 3:00pm – 5:00pm \nThe name “parfleche” was initially used by French fur traders and derives from the French language parer meaning “to parry” or “to defend”\, and flèche meaning “arrow”. “Parfleche” was used to describe tough rawhide shields carried by Plains Indian warriors but was later used primarily for decorated rawhide containers. Plains Indian tribes often had an abundant source of hides in the buffalo they hunted\, but\, as they were nomadic\, they had little opportunity to tan the skins. Parfleche\, or rawhide\, was prepared by cleaning and dehairing the skin and then by stretching it and allowing it to dry in the sun. This process created a stiff but durable leather that was used for many items\, including bags\, boxes\, envelopes\, and war shields. Designs historically consisted of geometric shapes and symbols in primary colors. \nToday\, many contemporary Plains Indian artists evolved the idea of parfleche by making earrings\, bracelets\, wallets\, etc (examples below). \nThis event will accompany Danielle SeeWalker’s featured collection\, which will be on display throughout the month of December. \nAbout Danielle SeeWalkerDanielle SeeWalker is Húŋkpapȟa Lakȟóta and citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. She is a fine artist\, muralist\, writer\, activist\, and boymom of two\, based in Denver\, Colorado. Her visual artwork often incorporates the use of mixed media and experimentation while incorporating traditional Native American materials\, scenes\, and messaging. Her artwork pays homage to her identity as a Lakȟóta wíŋyaŋ (woman) and her passion to redirect the narrative to an accurate and insightful representation of contemporary Native America while still acknowledging historical events. \nAbout Paradigm Gallery + StudioParadigm Gallery + Studio® was established in 2010 by co-founders and curators\, Jason Chen and Sara McCorriston. The gallery exhibits meaningful\, process-intense contemporary artwork by emerging and mid-career artists from around the world. In 2022\, Paradigm announced the opening of its new 5-story\, 7\,000 sq. ft. home\, The Paradigm Arts Building\, in Old City\, Philadelphia. Now open to the public\, the building boasts multiple floors of exhibition space\, integrated in-house design and printmaking\, a dedicated events floor\, and art advisory offices. With this\, Chen and McCorriston expanded their vision for the greater Philadelphia arts community. The gallery is at the heart of this vision\, anchoring Paradigm’s overall mission of increasing access to the commercial art world\, supporting artists and advancing their careers\, and collaborating with like-minded partners to build a more equitable\, sustainable arts economy for all.
