SUMMARY:Wagner's May First Saturday Open House: Space Rocks!
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Wagner museum and the collections\, and learn all about things that are out of this world!\n\n\nMAY FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE\nSpace Rocks!\n \nMay the Fourth be the day you visit the Wagner! Inspired by a certain legendary franchise\, we’re looking to the stars for May’s First Saturday to celebrate the ways space can be even more fascinating than in science fiction. At 1:00 and 3:00\, hear from Dr. Alexandra Krull Davatzes from Temple University’s Earth & Environmental Science department about on her work as a part of the HiRISE Camera Team. HiRISE is taking photos of the surface of Mars from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to understand major flooding events. \nIf you’re ready to head to space yourself\, get ready for stomp rockets. Hear about some of the tools scientists use to launch vehicles into space and what’s on board. After you launch a rocket\, head over to the telescopes for some solar observing! See sunspots through a mylar filter. \nParticipate in a design challenge to create your own Mars Rover. Learn about the challenges that face scientists when exploring rocky extraterrestrial landscapes\, and see how your ingenuity can overcome the terrain. \nAll afternoon\, you can also explore what’s here on earth in the Wagner’s exhibit hall filled with 100\,000 specimens that range from tiny insects to giant dinosaurs bones. There are scavenger hunts to guide you or you can draw from the collections. Can you find our meteorite? Search your feelings\, you know it to be true. This is one First Saturday you don’t want to miss! \nThis event is a part of Remake Learning Days\, which is a festival of events and experiences for children to celebrate innovation\, curiosity\, and creativity. Events are held at museums\, libraries\, schools\, universities\, and industry sites throughout Pennsylvania. More local events can be found here: https://remakelearningdays.org/southeasternpa/ \n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. \n• Masks are recommended but not required. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum and food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free and metered parking is available on Bouvier Street and Cecil B. Moore. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. SUMMARY:Ghost Signs of Washington Sq West
DESCRIPTION:Tour a range of ghost signs from Washington Square West through Center City\, exploring the commercial history behind them.\n\n\nJoin Hidden City as we tour a range of ghost signs from Washington Square West through Center City. We’ll discuss the history of the businesses and buildings behind the faded ads\, exploring signage as a window to the neighborhoods’ commercial past: Piano Row on Chestnut Street\, a concentration of print and publishing houses\, Horn & Hardart Automat\, and so much more. \n“Ghost Signs” are faded and often forgotten business and advertisement signs\, usually found on the front or sides of buildings. The effects of decades of weather\, neglect\, and cover-up attempts have diminished their eye-catching glow\, but they reveal generations of a building’s history and fascinating stories of our city. \nMeet at the northwest corner of St James St & West Washington Square. \nTour guide Jordan Keiffer has been documenting Philadelphia’s ghost signs on the Instagram page @phillyghostsigns since 2019. His goal is to connect people to the forgotten stories of these faded signs through historic narratives and supplemental images. His work was featured in a special exhibition on ghost signs at the Neon Museum of Philadelphia in 2021. A native of Montgomery County\, PA\, Keiffer is a proud Temple University alum. He enjoys long runs and bike rides through the city that allow him to periodically check in on ghost signs. \nIf you are a Hidden City Member\, don’t forget to use your promo code for a member discount! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? First we remove invasive plants then plant native trees and shrubs that can handle both drought and wet conditions. The funding came initially from a riparian buffer grant to help divert storm water in a priority flood zone. This will provide natural habitat for wildlife and migrating birds while native flowering shrubs feed pollinators and flowering native trees help feed other insects. \n \n\nMore about this project\nPhoto Gallery / History\n\nSpecies totals \nWe planted 961 Trees of 14 native to Pennsylvania species from 2020 to 2022. \n225 trees in 2020\, 325 trees in 2021 and 411 trees in 2022. \n275 Shrubs from 8 native berrying species were planted between 2020 and 2022. 100 shrubs in 2020\, 25 in 2021 and 125 more 2022. \nTrees: \n\n183 Sycamore\n150 River Birch\n130 Pin Oaks\n125 Tulip Poplar\n100 Paw Paw\n47 Swamp White Oak\n50 Sassafras\n20 Sweet Bay Magnolia\n25 Black Gum\n25 Black Willow Oak\n25 Red Oaks\n8 Red Buds\n6 Sweetgum\n5 White Pine\n\nShrubs: \n\n50 Elderberry\n50 Winterberry\n50 Black choke berry\n25 WitchHazel\n25 Red Choke Berry\n25 Grey dogwood\n25 Red Dogwood\n25 Spice Bush\n\n \nHistory and Progress of this project:\nWe continually need help tree tending the weeding 1236 Native Trees and Shrubs \nFirst\, in September 2020\, we planted 100 Native trees / 22 Native shrubs with a fancy metal cage and large tree riparian grant from Tree Vitalize. \nIn October 2020 we planted an additional 125 trees and 75 Shrubs from a different grant from 10 million trees in the 2nd phase of the project. \nIn Spring 2021\, in our the 3rd Phase of the Neshaminy State Park Reforestation Project we planted 125 nice larger trees in fancy deer protection metal cages from TreeVitalize. \nIn the 4th Phase also in the spring of 2021 we planted another 200 bare root trees (Sycamore \, Tulip Poplar) in Tubex from a different grant from Keystone 10 million trees. \nIn the 5th Phase in Spring of 2022 we planted 2 areas in Neshaminy State Park with an additional 655 trees. 30 larger trees for a separate grove funded by Excel Events while an additional 600 trees and shrubs were provided through our partner Keystone 10 Million Trees (Chesapeake Bay Foundation). \n\n\n* Project update 5-11-22\nOn Saturday 5-28-22 we are still planting trees and Shrubs. After attending culinary school\, Ulrika worked at restaurants in Sweden before she came to New York City where she fell in love with the vibrant melting pot of world cuisines. In 1990\, she joined the staff at the prestigious Swedish restaurant Aquavit where she gained invaluable experience before accepting a position cooking for the Swedish Consulate General with a focus on introducing American businesses to Sweden. Fueled by her passion for authentic Swedish cuisine\, Ulrika opened her restaurant\, Ulrika’s\, on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan in 1999. The establishment embraced the Farm to Fork concept\, a notion close to Ulrika’s heart since her childhood\, emphasizing the importance of knowing where food comes from. Ulrika’s most recent venture is the Björk Café & Bistro at Scandinavia House on Park Avenue which opened in the Fall of 2022. ASHM is thrilled to honor Ulrika with our Outstanding Achievement Award\, and we look forward to many more of her culinary accomplishments.
