DESCRIPTION:FABSCRAP needs your help to save designer textiles from landfills! It’s easy to learn\, fun to do\, and a safe way to help out.\n\n\nFABSCRAP Philly needs your help to save designer textiles from landfill! We are now in Unit B05A. Please review the directions below for visiting our new space. \nWhen registering\, choose: \n\nFirst Time Volunteer Sorter if this is your first time volunteering with us\nReturn Volunteer Sorter if you’ve sorted with us before\n\nNote: If you choose to donate\, please make sure that you also choose a sorter ticket. \nFABSCRAP Philly is committed to keeping our volunteers\, community\, and team safe: \n\nAll visitors are encouraged to wear a mask in the FABSCRAP warehouse.\nVolunteer stations are comfortably spaced apart for individual use (unless you opt to share with a friend)\nCleaning and sanitizing of volunteer stations and frequently touched surfaces will take place between all volunteer sessions.\nHand sanitizer is available.\nWe ask that volunteers cancel their session and stay home if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms including fever\, cough\, and/or gastrointestinal issues (see additional info from the CDC). Additionally\, please cancel your session and stay home if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days.\n\nThank you for being part of our work and mission! When you sign up\, please consider donating to keep us operational as a sustainable resource – FABSCRAP is the only option available for the fashion industry to recycle and redistribute unused material\, and the most accessible way for consumers to find saved-from-landfill fabric\, trim\, leather\, and yarn. \nWant to get more involved? We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! SUMMARY:clay practice; terrestrial-touch with Shannon Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Join Leeway x Fleisher 2023 Artist in Residence Shannon Brooks for a workshop exploring movement\, sound\, material\, and wearable ceramics.\n\n\nJoin Shannon Brooks\, Leeway x Fleisher 2023 Artist in Residence for a community workshop!\nSomewhere between a movement/sound practice\, a loose experiment in past/future/interdimensional archiving\, and a ceramic workshop\, clay practice; terrestrial-touch invites participants into a collaborative practice using movement\, sound\, and material (clay) to create wearable\, ceramic memory-landscapes. \n\n12-1:15pm: In the first part of this workshop\, Shannon will guide participants through guided movement/sound improvisations to connect with our bodies\, environment\, and each other. Together\, we will root into each of our personal and collective subterranean-archives\, our real and unreal histories\, dreams\, and futures.\n1:15-1:45pm: 30-minute break.\n1:45-3pm: In the second part of the workshop\, we will translate these explorations physically into clay with our bodies\, imprinting this sensory information as a topographical archive of textures using our full bodies (hands\, feet\, knees\, elbows\, etc.). The workshop will culminate by working our surreal forms into structurally sound\, wearable objects meant to be touched\, moved with\, and worn.\n\nBy joining this workshop\, attendees are contributing to a large-scale\, collaborative\, artwork that will be a part of Shannon’s Leeway x Fleisher Visual Artist Residency final exhibition. Participants will have their wearable creations fired\, glazed and worked into a sculptural\, memory-landscape that evolves and is interacted with over the duration of the exhibition. At the conclusion of the exhibition\, participants will be able to take home their finished pieces. \nThis workshop is adaptable to any body\, mind\, age\, gender\, etc. No dance/movement experience is necessary to participate! Shannon is deeply influenced by the work of Disability Justice leaders and understands pain\, Disability\, and Access as generative\, creative forces that transform time\, space\, and power structures. This practice is deeply influenced by personal experiences with low-vision/blindness\, madness\, and chronic illness. \nLearn more about Shannon’s 2023 Leeway x Fleisher residency here. \nVENUE ACCESSIBILITY\nThe workshop will take place in Palumbo Park\, right next door to Fleisher\, accessible by a ramp. There are gender neutral restrooms in the lobby near the main entrance which are accessible by climbing a few stairs or using a stair lift. Fleisher offers free parking in the lot across the street\, and includes designated accessible parking spaces. The sidewalk surface varies and there is a curb cut at the corner of 7th and Catharine. The rain date for this event is Sunday\, July 28th. If rain is present on both days\, there will be communication regarding rescheduling the event. \nCOVID PROTOCOL\nMasks are encouraged\, but not required. \n*** \nABOUT THE LEEWAY x FLEISHER ARTIST RESIDENCY\nEstablished in 2019\, the Leeway x Fleisher Visual Artist Residency is an opportunity for a Leeway grantee to utilize Fleisher’s art-making studios and facilities as one of the oldest community art-schools in the country. Artist-in-Residence receive a $2\,500 stipend from Leeway and access to Fleisher’s space to create their work. Learn more about Fleisher and Leeway.

SUMMARY:Summer @ the Wagner - Friday Afternoon Guided Tours - Women in Science
DESCRIPTION:Ready for the weekend? Explore the history and collections of the Wagner with a guided tour!\n\n\nSummer Fridays!\nGuided Tour of the Wagner – Women in Science\nJoin us on Friday afternoons this summer for guided tours of the Wagner – each week will highlight a different part of the collection!\n \nThe Wagner Free Institute of Science is a National Historic Landmark natural history museum\, with more than 100\,000 specimens on display in its historic Exhibition Hall. \nEvery specimen in the collection has its own story to tell. There are smaller stories of how each specimen arrived at the Wagner and larger stories about evolution\, religion\, and humans’ place in the universe. This guided tour offers a special opportunity to learn more about our specimens\, why the exhibit hall is arranged the way it is\, and how our museum reflects social and intellectual histories of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nEach week\, the tour will begin in the Lecture Hall with a presentation on the founding and history of the Wagner\, followed by a guided tour of the museum that will highlight the architecture of the building and some of the specimens on display. This week will focus on women in science\, including women who contributed to the Wagner’s collections. \nAfter the tour\, you can continue to explore our historic site and museum collections\, including minerals\, fossils\, shells\, insects\, taxidermy birds and mammals. Themed scavenger hunts\, drawing or coloring activities are available to guide you. Stop by our gift shop and pick up a geode to crack open\, polished crystals for your collection\, a vintage tea towel or your own copy of Historic Landmarks of Philadelphia–which features the Wagner! \nThe guided tour runs from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. All ages are welcome but the recommended age is 12 and up. \nTickets are not required to visit the museum but if you’d like to speed up your entry\, sign up HERE. Advance registration for the guided tour reserves your place on the tour. Please register on this page. Sign-up will be available on the day of the tour if space is available. \nGuided tour tickets are $20 for adults\, $15 for members and seniors\, $10 for students. Admission to the museum without a tour is free or a pay-as-you-wish donation. \n\n\n\nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. The museum opens at 9:30 am. \n• Masks are recommended but not required. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum and food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free and metered parking is available on Bouvier Street and Cecil B. Moore. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is free—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nGuided tour tickets: \n$20/adult \n$15/member or senior \n$10/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \n \nImages: an overview of Wagner’s Exhibition Hall by David Graham & a closer up view of the museum displays by Rob Cardillo.
