It’s easy to learn\, fun to do\, and a safe way to help out.\n\n\nFABSCRAP Philly needs your help to save designer textiles from landfill! When you sign up\, please consider donating to keep us operational as a sustainable resource – FABSCRAP is the only option available for the fashion industry to recycle and redistribute unused material\, and the most accessible way for consumers to find saved-from-landfill fabric\, trim\, leather\, and yarn. \nWant to get more involved? We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! SUMMARY:Philly Cider Week Finale Fall Street Fest
DESCRIPTION:Philly Cider Week is an annual weeklong series of events celebrating orchard-driven cider\, with a focus on cideries based out of Pennsylvania and highlighting PA-grown apples. PCW’s goals are to continue to expose the Philadelphia region to the ever-growing world of cider. To raise industry and consumer awareness of the diversity of this historical beverage. We strive to cultivate an appreciation of the sense of place tied to agriculturally-driven beverages\, specifically ciders\, that share an honest connection to the land on which the fruit is grown\, and the importance that such products hold for the future of the planet. \nThis year’s official Philly Cider Week finale will again be held on 7th Street between South Street and Fitzwater. SUMMARY:WORLD PREMIERE: Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle
DESCRIPTION:The Strides Collective Presents: \nA World Premiere production of Sister of Mine by Kate McGunagle \nDirected by Jonathan V. Edmondson\nAssistant Directed by Caitlin Alvarez\nHonorary Producer: Lauren Hughes \nFeaturing:\nA – Eliza Waterman\nZ – MJ Santry \nWednesday\, October 25 – Sunday\, October 29\, 2023\, at the Community Education Center (3500 Lancaster Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104). Sister of Mine runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. \nAbout the Play: A and Z\, former childhood friends recovering from compulsory heterosexuality\, imagine a series of encounters in which they unexpectedly reunite after substantial time apart\, exposing longings\, secrets\, and betrayals. A love letter to the intricacy of first queer friendship\, Sister of Mine is a meditation on the queer experience of searching for an identity within a world that both imposes and resists categorization. \nAbout the Playwright: A queer writer and artist from rural Montana\, Kate is deeply interested in stories that wrestle with the seemingly impossible – those that examine queer bodies\, experience\, and pleasure\, interrogate rape culture and gendered violence\, and revel in the spaces between social categories and within ordinary life. Her first play M\, developed through the Tennessee Playwrights Studio fellowship program in 2022\, examines what it is to document a queer woman’s life and longings\, on the page and on the screen. Sister of Mine will be her first formally produced piece. \nKate holds a B.A. in English from Princeton University and M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Boston University\, and her short fiction and personal essays have appeared or are forthcoming in The Whitefish Review\, Five Points\, Passages North\, and The North American Review; her essay “Passive Voice\,” which examines the language of rape\, was the recipient of the 2021 Terry Tempest Williams Prize in Creative Nonfiction and named a Notable Essay in the Best American Essays 2022. She is an active collaborator within The Pipeline Collective\, which first led her to playwriting\, and author behind the playful Substack Bardette\, which examines daily queer encounters. \nAbout The Strides Collective: Founded in 2020\, The Strides Collective is a nonprofit queer theatre company in Philadelphia that produces and develops theatrical work by emerging playwrights that embraces the queer experience through authentic\, modern\, and innovative storytelling. SUMMARY:Mobilizing and Creating Coalitions Through Story Circles
DESCRIPTION:Led by Lizania Cruz / part of Teaching at the End of Times\n\n\nMobilizing & Building Coalitions led by artist Lizania Cruz \nIn this workshop participants will learn how to use story circles as a way of uniting\, mobilizing\, and honoring the histories of immigrant communities. And as a framework for creating coalitions based on different expressions of power: power within\, power with\, and power to. The goals of this workshop are to understand the framework of story circles and how to put it into praxis\, to draw connections between the stories shared and how these could become tools of organizing by creating “power with\,” “power to\,” and “power within.” \nWater and snacks will be provided during the event and food will be served towards the end of the workshop. \nRead more about Teaching and the End of Times and the workshop leader \nSee the full schedule of related events here

SUMMARY:FRIEDAcommunity – Reading + Poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special literary event celebrating ANYBODY HOME? (Blue Edge\, 2023)\, the poetry debut from Kay Cosgrove.\nThis event is made possible thanks to donations from our annual fundraiser.\nThe poems in Kay Cosgrove’s first collection are driven by curiosity – about herself\, the world\, and her place in it. Witty and elegantly restrained\, they ask the question: how do we live the lives we’ve made for ourselves? Cosgrove roams from barrooms to checkout lines to the enigma of motherhood; she is a teenager responsible for a sack-of-flour-as-a-baby\, and then an adult driving a teenage babysitter home. She explores the texture of our connections to strangers\, family\, ourselves\, and illuminates the sublime in the unimportant. The poems in Anybody Home? embrace life’s sweetness and shadows. Here\, the ordinary is unfathomable and the ineffable is ordinary.\nOther readers include: Christian Bancroft\, Lauren Hilger and Adrienne Perry \nTime: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm\nPrice: this is a free event open to the general public\nSign up at least 2 days prior to the event via email hello@frieda.community \nCheck website for more information www.frieda.community/programs/reading-poetry-debut-from-kay-cosgrove/

SUMMARY:Direct from Palestine: a Conversation with Bard and Al Quds University
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 14th\, from noon – 2 pm\, for a community conversation with faculty and students living and studying near the Wall.\n\n\nJoin us on October 14th\, from noon – 2 pm\, for a community conversation with faculty and students living and studying near the Wall. \nDirect from Palestine\, from Abu Dis to Philly\, a community conversation with the Philadelphia area and Bard and Al Quds University faculty and students. These two universities are located in Abu Dis\, the Wall sits directly in front of them. This is an opportunity to hear first hand accounts about what life is like living\, working and studying behind the Wall. This event will zoom in the people from Palestine to discuss the current situation behind the Wall\, as well as what work is being done in solidarity in the US. For US participants please attend InLiquid Gallery. \nThis discussion is in conjunction with the solo exhibitoin La La Lil Jidar: 20 Years Behind the Apartheid Wall in Palestine\, currently on view at the InLiquid Gallery. \nAisha Mershani’s (they/them) photography focuses on the Israel Apartheid Wall\, visually exposing the realities on the ground in Palestine\, reframing the source of violence. For nearly 20 years Mershani has photographed military checkpoints\, popular demonstrations\, house demolitions\, destroyed villages\, and the daily lives of Palestinians living under the violence of the Israeli Apartheid.  Most recently\, in 2022\, Mershani returned to the Occupied West Bank\, finding countless people that were photographed in 2004/2005 to photograph them again\, showing time behind the Wall. \nMershani’s photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries\, multiple publications\, as well as many internet news sites over the years to further the awareness of the ongoing situation on the ground in Palestine. They are also one of the artists in the reference book\, “Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists“. \nAisha Mershani was born in Las Vegas\, Nevada to an American Jewish mother and a Moroccan Muslim father. Mershani holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Redlands in California\, and a Master’s and a Ph.D. degree from the UNESCO program in Peace\, Development Studies\, and Conflict Transformation at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón de la Plana\, Spain. \nTheir work comes from a place of concern about the injustices occurring in the Middle East\, and a commitment to artistically expose these injustices and educate those outside of the region. For Mershani it is vital to view Palestine/Israel beyond US mainstream news framing. The expression of everyday life is the primary objective of their documentary photographic work. \n \nThe InLiquid Gallery is located within the Crane Arts Building which is wheelchair accessible. There is limited accessible parking at the front of the building\, and a ramp leading into the main entrance. The main building door is not automated. Two all-gender bathrooms with multiple stalls are available for use — one with urinals\, one without\, and both with 1–2 wheelchair-accessible stall(s).

SUMMARY:Parkside Past\, Parkside Present: Walking Tour of Neighborhood & Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood! \n\n\nDATE\nSaturday\, October 28\, 2023 \n\n\n\nTIME\n10:00am – 12:30pm \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nSchool of the Future\n4021 Parkside Ave\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19104 \n\n\n\nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a special walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood on October 28 from 10:00 AM—12:30 PM. \nParkside. The name says it all — it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include: \n\nCentennial Exposition model in Please Touch Museum\nSmith Memorial Arch\nParkside Apartments. (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\nChrist Community Baptist Church (built from an Old synagogue)\nLansdowne Apartment Building built in 1897\nCentennial Commons\nPhiladelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural\n\n\nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails\n \n\nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $15\, $20\, or $25\n[ Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ]\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe tour covers about 2.5 miles on foot. Not all areas will be ADA-accessible.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 12 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease wear comfortable shoes.\nPlease dress for weather conditions.\nBring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are porta-potties available along the tour route.\nDogs on leashes are welcome; however\, you will not be able to enter the Please Touch Museum.\n\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking available in the School of the Future parking lot closer to Girard Ave. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If you are traveling by public transit\, the nearest station is at Parkside Ave and 40th Street. The nearest Indego bike station is roughly 1/2 mile away at the Philadelphia Zoo (1046 North 34th Street). \n\nQUESTIONS? Please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org
