SUMMARY:Yarn Reclaiming Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to reclaim yarn from pre-loved textiles by guest instructor Natalie Powell\n\n\nDo you like thrifting\, crafting\, and sustainability? Have you ever left a yarn store and opened your wallet to find it empty but for a little moth that flies out? Let’s face it: yarn is expensive and most second-hand clothing ends up in the dumpster. Let’s do something about it- come learn how to reclaim yarn! \nYarn reclaiming is the practice of unwinding yarn from second-hand textiles. Reclaimed yarn can be used in crochet\, knit\, weaving\, or in any other fiber art. If you’re looking to save money for your hobby or just trying to craft more sustainably\, this workshop is for you. \nIn this workshop you will learn how to: \n\nSelect second-hand clothing and textiles\nClean and prepare the materials\nUnwind textiles and form them into yarn cakes\n\nThis workshop is hands-on and you will leave with a cake of yarn that you reclaimed from second-hand clothing. \nAll necessary materials will be provided for this workshop. If you have a yarn ball winder we recommend bringing it to use\, but it is not necessary. All levels are welcome! \nSpace is limited in our studio- we are able to accommodate 12 attendees. You can reach them at their Instagram @pixels.and.stitches. \n\n\n\nLocation and Accessibility: \nThis workshop meets in-person for 2 hours. \nSTITCH AND DESTROY is located right off of South Street on 4th St in Philadelphia. SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesday in West Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and Coach Shay of Inner Sanctuary Wellness on the last Wednesday of every month from 6:30–8 PM* for a wellness program set in the beautiful greenspace of West Fairmount Park. \nCoach Shay will blend together restorative yoga and sound healing practices\, allowing for gentle movement and meditation throughout. Participants will leave each program feeling rejuvenated and grounded. \nInterested in getting in a walk before the program? We Walk PHL will be leading a walk prior to each wellness program\, starting at 5:45 PM. If you plan to attend the walk as well\, you can register for that here. \n*Wellness Wednesdays are May-September. (Please note\, September’s program is from 5:45-7:15 PM to account for an earlier sunset.) \nABOUT COACH SHAY: Coach Shay is a fierce self-care/mental health advocate who educates and inspires others on best practices for living an easeful\, more balanced life. After years of working in high-demand corporate roles\, being deprived of rest and experiencing burnout\, she found healing and restoration in practicing yoga and mindfulness. Her journey ignited a passion to help others and in addition to teaching yoga\, she uses her gifts as a sound practitioner and holistic health coach as tools to help others destress and connect with their bodies and breath to find deep rest and healing. Her desire is to help all beings discover balance and vitality\, and as the founder of Inner Sanctuary Wellness\, she mindfully curates experiences and services that allow rest and offer rejuvenation for the mind\, body\, and soul. You can learn more about her work on Instagram at @coachshay2020. \nTICKETS: Free**\, donations appreciated. Registration is required. \n**We are proud to be able to offer these events for free. However\, there is limited capacity for the event. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows can take away tickets from others. We ask that you be mindful of this and please only register if you plan to attend. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO:\n-We will meet at Parkside Edge and then walk (less than half-mile) to a nearby location for the actual program.\n-Parkside Edge is located along Parkside Avenue in between West and East Memorial Drives. It comes up as ‘Parkside Park’ in most navigation apps.\n-Classes will take place in a grassy field.\n-Please bring your own yoga mat.\n-We recommend you bring something to place under your yoga mat\, such as a towel\, to keep it protected from “the elements” (grassy surface\, sometimes damp after recent rain\, etc.).\n-An eye mask/pillow is optional but nice to have for the sound bath portion.\n-Please note that this program is gentle\, restorative\, and slow\, focusing on stillness and relaxation. It may not be a perfect fit for those looking for more of a high-impact yoga class.\n-Appropriate for adults and mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\n-This event is held entirely outside so please dress according to weather conditions.\n-Bring your water (drinking water is not available in the park).\n-Unfortunately\, there are no bathrooms nearby so please plan accordingly.\n-Bring sunscreen and bug spray.\n-Space is limited in each program and registration is required. If you cannot attend an event\, please show courtesy to fellow parkgoers and try to cancel your registration with advance notice so that someone else can participate. Repeat no-shows may not be able to register for future free events.\n-Important pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event. \nPARKING/GETTING THERE: Parkside Edge is located along Parkside Avenue in between West and East Memorial Drives. It comes up as ‘Parkside Park’ in most navigation apps. There is plenty of free parking in the park. As always\, never leave valuables in your car! If traveling by public transit\, the nearest bus stop is at Parkside and Belmont Ave – less than a quarter-mile walk. The nearest Indego bike station is also located at Parkside and Belmont Ave.

SUMMARY:Boneyard Bookworms: June Discussion
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join Laurel Hill’s book club which reads and discusses a wide range of genres and topics\, from historical nonfiction to contemporary novels\, from science and medicine to memoir and humor. \nIn June we’ll discuss The Garden Against Time: In Search of a Common Paradise by Olivia Liang. In this insightful book\, Laing\, inspired by her own restoration of a walled garden\, delves into the profound connection between gardens and the human experience\, especially during challenging times. She unearths the rich history and symbolism of gardens\, examining how they embody ideals of utopia\, memory\, and culture. Laing also thoughtfully questions the privilege and exclusion often involved in creating these “paradises\,” and considers the possibilities for new ways of living in our complex modern world. Part memoir\, part historical inquiry\, “The Garden Against Time” offers a unique perspective on personal creativity and the deep relationship between individuals and their green spaces amidst personal and societal shifts.

SUMMARY:The Wissahickon in June with Debbie Hoellein\, Jim McClory\, and Doug Gibson
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Debbie Hoellein\nMeeting at Rex Avenue Trailhead Kiosk (see map here)\nJoin Debbie\, Jim\, and Doug as we hike the Wissahickon at the close of the first week of summer. We will visit Sarah’s Rock and the Looking West statue\, and enjoy other sights of natural and historical interest. Although we are starting from the same spot as our February hike\, we will stay mostly on the east side of the Wissahickon Creek\, with just a bit of time on Forbidden Drive.\nOur approximately 4-4.5 mile route includes some steep and rocky ascents and descents and is a bit more difficult than the hike we did from the Rex trailhead in February\, so come prepared with sturdy shoes (and trekking poles if you have them!).\nChildren 12 years of age and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but\, please\, no dogs except for service animals.\nDistance: 4-4.5 miles\nLevel: Difficult (many inclines and declines\, uneven surfaces)\nRegistration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations.\nUnless otherwise specified\, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky\, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain or icy conditions. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Marisa Miller at miller@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.\nRegister below!
