SUMMARY:Creative Economies Workshop: Networking for Artists
DESCRIPTION:“What do you do?” – Networking Strategies for Artists\n\n\n“What do you do?” – Networking Strategies for Artists \nAs artists\, we are often asked to talk about our artwork and these conversations can often have direct professional consequences. Whether it be a future collaborator\, curator\, a visiting artist\, or someone who can directly support your work\, there are crippling moments where you will have to not only introduce yourself\, but discuss your work. These situations can lead to the most wonderful of collaborations\, friendships\, and often change our career trajectories. But\, it can someimtnes be more difficult than creating the work itself. How many times has someone asked you “What do you do?” and you left the conversation feeling lackluster? More people struggle with these issues than you can imagine. It’s how to thrive in those situations with a Strategical Social Confidence\, and in this interactive workshop we will both share and practice some of the tools we’ve gathered along the way. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nHow to discuss your work.\nWhat to say when you meet someone you admire.\nHow to get to the thing (your ask\, project\, etc)\nDiscovering and maintaining cponnections\nDismantling ‘Networking’\n\nThis is the third in four workshop series funded by the City of Philadelphia’s Commerce Department. \nInstructors: \n \nVictor Vieira-Branco is a vibraphonist\, improviser\, and blue-collar composer-performer\, based in Philadelphia\, with much of his life spent in São Paulo\, Brazil. She is co-creator of the social practice project\, Look at Art. Get Paid. Chao has shown at The Shed\, Tufts University\, Brown University\, RISD Museum\, Kellen Gallery at Parsons\, Haverford College\, and Cuchifritos Gallery. Chao was named a 2022-23 Pew Fellow and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2023. We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! (1 hour)\n\n***Sorting fabric requires the use of sharp scissors and moderate lifting (20-30 lbs). By registering for a session\, you are confirming that you have read\, understand\, and agree to the volunteer waiver.*** \n***Volunteer Waver Link Here: https://fabscrap.org/volunteerwaiver*** \nLATE POLICY: Our sorting time is very valuable and we aim to start right on the hour! For every 30 minutes a volunteer is late\, they will receive 1 less free pound of fabric. Thank you for understanding! We appreciate your time. \nTips for a successful volunteer session: \n\nDress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes as most volunteers sort while standing; we can provide chairs if you prefer to sit\nBring your own bag to carry home any material you shop for!\nWe play music but feel free to bring headphones\nFeel free to bring water or beverages with a cap/lid; there are also vending machines in the building\nAs the weather gets cooler\, windows will only be open for ventilation depending on the outside temperature\nPlease be sure to register for every session you plan to attend\, and if you are unable to attend cancel your ticket so that others may sign up for your space\n\nAs a thank-you for completing a 3-hour volunteer session\, we’re happy to: \n\nGive you 5 pounds of fabric for FREE and a 30% volunteer discount on any additional material you’d like to purchase… OR\nWaive the fee for recycling personal sewing scraps\, up to 10 pounds… OR\nSign a community service form\n\n***FABSCRAP does not accept used garments or home linens for recycling.*** \nTHESE DIRECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT: \nThe FABSCRAP Philly warehouse is located in Unit B05A within BOK\, which is accessible by foot\, bike/scooter\, car\, subway\, and bus. \nSUBWAY: Broad Street Line to Snyder Station \nBUS: 45\, 47\, 47M\, 79 Lines \nBIKE: Approach BOK’s Pedestrian Entrance on 821 Dudley Street\, between 8th and 9th Street.
