It’s easy to learn\, fun to do\, and a safe way to help out.\n\n\nFABSCRAP Philly needs your help to save designer textiles from landfill! Volunteers will sort through fabric samples and swatches\, separating fabric from paper headers and folding large\, usable fabric to be saved for reuse. We moved to a new space in BOK! We are now in Unit B05A. Please review the directions below for visiting our new space. \nWhen registering\, choose: \n\nFirst Time Volunteer Sorter if this is your first time volunteering with us\nReturn Volunteer Sorter if you’ve sorted with us before\n\nN ote: If you choose to donate\, please make sure that you also choose a sorter ticket. \nFABSCRAP Philly is committed to keeping our volunteers\, community\, and team safe: \n\nAll visitors are encouraged to wear a mask in the FABSCRAP warehouse.\nVolunteer stations are comfortably spaced apart for individual use (unless you opt to share with a friend)\nCleaning and sanitizing of volunteer stations and frequently touched surfaces will take place between all volunteer sessions.\nThe FABSCRAP team will be wearing masks.\nHand sanitizer is available.\nWe ask that volunteers cancel their session and stay home if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms including fever\, cough\, and/or gastrointestinal issues (see additional info from the CDC). When you sign up\, please consider donating to keep us operational as a sustainable resource – FABSCRAP is the only option available for the fashion industry to recycle and redistribute unused material\, and the most accessible way for consumers to find saved-from-landfill fabric\, trim\, leather\, and yarn. \nWant to get more involved? We are sending monthly invites to become a Reuse Volunteer to those who have volunteered 10 or more times! Reuse Volunteers help process materials in our Reuse bins after they leave the initial sorting table. It’s a great opportunity to understand the deconstruction of sample garments\, what types of items are donatable or mendable\, and how materials are processed for reuse or recyclability. We monitor our Eventbrite registrations closely. If you think you may have completed 10 sorting sessions and did not receive an invitation to sign up\, let us know at volunteer@fabscrap.org using the email you register for sessions with. \nPlease read below for additional information on volunteering\, including other changes at the FABSCRAP Philly warehouse due to COVID-19. \n— \nWhat to expect: \n\nWelcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)\nTraining: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)\nSort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces\, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2.5 hours)\nShop for fabric! By registering for a session\, you are confirming that you have read\, understand\, and agree to the volunteer waiver.*** \n***Volunteer Waver Link Here: https://fabscrap.org/volunteerwaiver*** \nTips for a successful volunteer session: \n\nDress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes as most volunteers sort while standing; we can provide chairs if you prefer to sit\nBring your own bag to carry home any material you shop for!\nWe play music but feel free to bring headphones\nFeel free to bring water or beverages with a cap/lid; there are also vending machines in the building\nAs the weather gets cooler\, windows will only be open for ventilation depending on the outside temperature\nPlease be sure to register for every session you plan to attend\, and if you are unable to attend – especially if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19\, have been diagnosed with COVID-19\, or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days – cancel your ticket so that others may sign up for your space\n\nAs a thank-you for completing a 3-hour volunteer session\, we’re happy to: \n\nGive you 5 pounds of fabric for FREE and a 30% volunteer discount on any additional material you’d like to purchase… OR\nWaive the fee for recycling personal sewing scraps\, up to 10 pounds… OR\nSign a community service form\n\n***FABSCRAP does not accept used garments or home linens for recycling.*** \nTHESE DIRECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT: \nThe FABSCRAP Philly warehouse is located in Unit B05A within BOK\, which is accessible by foot\, bike/scooter\, car\, subway\, and bus. \nSUBWAY: Broad Street Line to Snyder Station \nBUS: 45\, 47\, 47M\, 79 Lines \nBIKE: Approach BOK’s Pedestrian Entrance on 821 Dudley Street\, between 8th and 9th Street. SUMMARY:Wild Plant Culture (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Native edible and medicinal plant species can be integrated into gardens and ecological restoration projects to create habitats that support (and include) humans as part of local ecosystems. We’ll consider stewarding edible and medicinal plant species in native habitats such as riparian corridors and glades and discuss how a habitat-based approach translates to yards\, parks\, and farms. We’ll explore the prospect of changing our foodways to patterns that favor native diversity\, rewarding restoration and stewardship.\nThis program takes place online on Wednesday\, January 10\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor:\nField botanist\, native plant grower\, and restoration practitioner Jared Rosenbaum\, author of Wild Plant Culture: A Guide to Restoring Edible and Medicinal Native Plant Communities asks whether we can honor native ecosystems and lifeways as we restore habitats that support humans\, other animals\, and native plants alike.

SUMMARY:The Power of the Haudenosaunee "Words Before All Else"
DESCRIPTION:Learn the history\, present\, and future of the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address\, and how it informs Indigenous worldviews & movements\n\n\nComposed in about 1050 CE\, the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address\, or “Words Before All Else”\, united five warring American Indian tribes\, and served as the inspiration for both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. For Americans\, it as a new orientation to being human\, as it describes the Haudenosaunee relationship to the natural world\, whose principles are generally accepted and shared by all North American Native people. Reflected in the mural\, this ancient document is still aspirational and deeply moving for us today in 2024. Workshop participants will learn about the history of the address and discuss its context to their personal lives and movements. Each presenter will then demonstrate the social dancing that is customary for their nation in celebration like this one. \n \nThe Climate Justice Initiative is a collaboration between front-line organizers\, activists\, and artists\, convened by Mural Arts Philadelphia. We use the power of public art to tell stories about the causes\, effects\, and solutions to the climate crisis in Lenapehoking (the greater Philadelphia region). SUMMARY:EDUCATION Over INCARCERATION (Human Trafficking Awareness) Dr. Umar Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Bigga Dre Presents: Education Over Incarceration Featuring: Dr. Umar Johnson MLK WEEKEND Guest\nSpeakers\,Music\, Vegan Food\, VENDORS & More\n\n\nJOIN US Friday January 12\, 2024 from 5pm-9pm at CLARION HOTEL (Philadelphia International Airport) Essington P.a. 19029 Bigga Dre Presents…Education Over Incarceration Featuring: Dr. Umar Johnson MLK WEEKEND Human Trafficking Awareness Month ! JOIN Us for this very important Community Event! ENJOY a night of Guest Speakers\, Cultural Vendors\, Conscious Music\, Vegan Food! LEARN MORE about The “School To Prison Pipeline” and the Social\, Psychological and Physical Effects of The MAAFA \nVENDING OPPORTUNITIES and Other InquiriesEmail: trueandfaithful1@hotmail.com \nESCHATOLOGY (Bring Our Girls Back/Bring Our Boys Back) is a Prevention/Awareness PSA (Public Service Announcement) Campaign that is geared to provide solutions for melaninated people who have been disproportionately affected by Human Trafficking through what is called “THE MAAFA” . \nOver 75000 Black Women are currently missing but the mainstream media fails to bring immediate attention to the general public. \nRecent school-to-prison pipeline has zeroed in on the disturbing trajectory of black girls. School officials impose harsh punishments on black girls\, including suspension and expulsion from school\, at alarming rates. \nThe most recent data from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights reveals that one of the harshest forms of discipline–out of school suspension–is imposed on black girls at seven times the rate of their white peers. \nIn the juvenile justice system\, black girls are the fastest growing demographic when it comes to arrest and incarceration. Explanations for the disproportionate disciplinary\, arrest\, and incarceration rates for black girls range from implicit bias by school and law enforcement officials to structural risk factors\, like poverty. \nScholars point to disproportionate discipline\, arrest\, and incarceration rates as evidence of a system that fails black girls by pushing them out of school and into the juvenile justice system\, thereby ultimately placing them at risk for a range of adverse life experiences. \nWhen school officials impose exclusionary discipline\, defined as any disciplinary practice that removes a student from school\, they place those students on a path to the school-to-prison pipeline.Students from marginalized communities are more likely to end up in the school-to-prison pipeline because of systemic racism. Also known as structural or institutional racism\, systemic racism refers to systems and policies that create and/or maintain racial inequalities. \nDisciplinary actions that result in court referrals\, suspensions\, or expulsions – all of which increase the likelihood of dropping out and entering the juvenile justice system – are disproportionately applied to students of color. \nAdditionally\, Black students are more likely than their white peers to be suspended\, expelled\, or arrested for the same kind of conduct. Furthermore\, Black students are suspended or expelled at a rate almost 3.5 times greater than that of white students. \nOne of our goals is to provide Resource & Preventional Tools For Community Members such as a Comprehensive Application (Missing Person App)\, Therapeutic Wholistic Community Healing\, and Community Resource Building for those in need of service and assistance. \nA portion of the proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to organizations and groups who have partnered with the campaign! \nFree will Offering Donations at the door.

SUMMARY:The Persistence of Geography - Charles Schmidt - Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Landscape paintings of the Delaware Water Gap by Charles Schmidt\n\n\nImagine you’re on a plane\, looking out the window at the breathtaking scenery below. The landscape unfolds beneath you\, blurring the lines between human-made structures and the beauty of nature. It’s like entering a whole new world\, where the noise and chaos of everyday life fades away. The Persistence of Geography features landscape paintings of the Delaware Water Gap by Charles Schmidt\, which not only capture the beauty of the site\, but also offer a profound reflection upon the intricate interplay between humanity\, temporality\, and the grandeur of the natural world. \nCharles Schmidt is reknowned for his incredible figure paintings\, but this series took him on a different path to new heights (literally). He had the opportunity see the world from a whole new perspective: the sky. The idea for this series came during a helicopter ride where he saw Mount Vesuvius and Mount St. Helens from inside of a plane. This inspired him to turn his attention to a place closer to home—the Delaware Water Gap. Schmidt discovered the contrast between the untouched wilderness of New Jersey and the bustling\, patterned landscape of Pennsylvania\, with Interstate 80 cutting through the center\, creating a fascinating contrast with the natural beauty around it. Schmidt took seasonal flights over the same site\, each offering a fresh perspective of new colors and textures. \nThese artworks remind us of our timeless desire to connect with nature\, to escape the grind of everyday life\, and to explore the beauty of our world from a different angle. The Persistence of Geography by Charles Schmidt invites you to join this extraordinary journey and discover the profound beauty that lies beyond the ordinary.
