SUMMARY:Owl Howl
DESCRIPTION:Many people have heard an owl\, but few have ever seen one. Mt. Cuba’s varied landscapes and topography provide the ideal habitats for three of Delaware’s native owl species – the barred\, great horned\, and Eastern screech – and winter is the best time to spot them roosting in our trees. Owls are nocturnal so join us as we search for them just after dusk. Following a brief introductory lecture\, we’ll head out into the garden and listen for their unique calls. Dress for the weather.\nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center from 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm on Wednesday\, February 7\, 2024 (Rain Date: Wednesday\, February 14).\nAbout the Instructor:\nJoe Sebastiani is the Director of Adult Engagement for the Delaware Nature Society. He is passionate about birds and wildlife\, founded the Ashland Hawk Watch\, and edits Delaware eBird\, an online checklist program\, for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.\nIan Stewart\, PhD\, was raised in Newcastle\, England and received a doctorate in ornithology from the University of Leicester. He has conducted research on tree swallows and bluebirds and how local land management activities are affecting bird numbers and diversity throughout the year. Ian works for the Delaware Nature Society where he is studying the effects of non-native plants on birds.

SUMMARY:Amsonia for Every Garden (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Amsonia\, or bluestars\, are a rugged\, versatile\, and endlessly garden-worthy genus that deserve a place in any home garden. Without exception\, bluestars are long-lived and provide multiple seasons of interest from their blue flowers in April and May\, to their beautiful foliar textures in summer\, and striking golden color in autumn. In addition to being exemplary garden plants\, amsonia support a variety of early season pollinators\, including bumblebees and hummingbirds\, and are even host plants for several butterflies and moths. Sam Hoadley\, manager of horticultural research\, will be your guide through the trials\, sharing how amsonia is evaluated to determine horticultural value and performance\, disease resistance\, and pollinator preference.\nThis program takes place online from 6 to 7:30 PM on Wednesday\, February 7\, 2024.\nAbout the Instructor: Sam Hoadley is the Manager of Horticultural Research at Mt. Cuba\, where he evaluates native plants to determine their horticultural and ecological values. Sam received his degree in Sustainable Landscape Horticulture from the University of Vermont.

SUMMARY:Imag(in)ing Revolutions Traditions of Unrest for an Anticolonial Art Praxis
DESCRIPTION:Artists & scholars convene for a cross-cultural conversation exploring art praxis as a means to redefine\, bring about\, & document revolution\n\n\nGanzeer\, Multi-disciplinary artist \nTessa Mars\, \, Multi-disciplinary artist \nCarlos Martiel\, Installation and performance artist \nAisha Mershani\, Photographer; Assistant Professor\, Interdsciplinary Studies\, Gettysburg College \nCorine Labridy\, Assistant Professor\, French and Francophone Studies\, University of Pennsylvania \nGwendalynn Roebke\, Graduate student\, Department of Philosophy\, University of Pennsylvania \nArtists and scholars convene for a cross-cultural conversation exploring art praxis as means to redefine\, bring about\, and document revolution\, attending to its afterlives on the margins of institutional memory. Moderators Corine Labridy and Gwendalynn Roebke will highlight the connection between the Arab world and Latin America in a wide-ranging discussion with accomplished artists from across the globe and disciplines: Ganzeer\, Tessa Mars\, Carlos Martiel\, and Aisha Mershani. \n_____________________________ \nDescribed as a “chameleon” by Carlo McCormick in the New York Times\, Ganzeer operates seamlessly between art\, design\, and storytelling\, creating what he has coined: Concept Pop. His medium of choice according to Artforum is “a little bit of everything: stencils\, murals\, paintings\, pamphlets\, comics\, installations\, and graphic design.” \nWith over 40 exhibitions to his name\, Ganzeer’s work has been seen in a wide variety of art galleries\, impromptu spaces\, alleyways\, and major museums around the world\, such as The Brooklyn Museum in New York\, The Palace of the Arts in Cairo\, Greek State Museum in Thessaloniki\, the V&A in London\, and the Edith Russ Haus in Oldenburg. Born in Cairo\, he is based in Houston\, TX. \n_____________________________ \nCorine Labridy is a native Guadeloupean and an assistant professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She specializes in French Caribbean and continental French Black cultures\, and her current research focuses on laughter as a counter-universalist critique. She is a co-founder of Kwazman Vwa\, a digital humanities project that invites new and established Caribbean authors and scholars to discuss their latest works. She is also assistant editor for Imaginaries\, an online publication affiliated with H-France that is concerned with the many ways that literature and history can and do intersect. She has written for Public Books\, Small Axe\, and the CLR James Journal. \n_____________________________ \nTessa Mars is a Haitian visual artist born and raised in Port-au-Prince. She completed a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts at Rennes 2 University in France in 2006 before returning to live and work in Haiti. Her work has been shown recently in the exhibitions “Your presence does not escape me” at Tiwani Gallery in London and “Who Tells a Tale adds a Tail” (2022) at the Denver Art Museum. Tessa Mars is an Alumn of the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten (2020-2022). She currently resides in Puerto Rico. \n_____________________________ \nArtist Carlos Martiel (born 1989\, Havana) lives and works in New York. He graduated in 2009 from the National Academy of Fine Arts “San Alejandro\,” in Havana. From 2008–2010\, he studied in the Cátedra Arte de Conducta\, directed by artist Tania Bruguera. \nMartiel’s works have been included in 57th Venice Biennale\, Italy. He has had performances at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville\, The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum\, The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and El Museo del Barrio in New York. He has received several awards\, including Grants to Artists from Foundation for Contemporary Arts in New York and the Latinx Artist Fellowship from US Latinx Art Forum. His work has been exhibited at The São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) in São Paulo\, The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam\, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH)\, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and his works are in public collections such as The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum\, The Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AEIVA)\, the ASU Art Museum. \n_____________________________ \nAisha Mershani (they/them) was born in Las Vegas\, Nevada to an American Jewish mother and a Moroccan Muslim father. Mershani completed their Ph.D. degree (2015) from the UNESCO program in International Peace\, Conflict\, and Development Studies at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón de la Plana\, Spain. Mershani’s dissertation\, entitled Palestinian Civil Resistance: A Case Study of the Popular Struggle Against the Wall from 2002-2013\, focused on life in the Occupied West Bank since the establishment of the Israeli Apartheid Wall\, and the Palestinian popular struggle to nonviolently remain on their lands. \nMershani’s scholarship utilizes photography as data\, a vital way to analyze contemporary violence. From 2003-2022\, Mershani focused on the Occupied Palestinian Territories. They have photographed military checkpoints\, popular demonstrations\, house demolitions\, destroyed villages\, and the daily lives of Palestinians living under the violence of the Israeli Apartheid. Mershani’s photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries and multiple publications\, including many internet news sites. Mershani is a featured artist in the reference book\, “Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists.” Their new show\, La La Lil Jidar; 20 Years Behind the Apartheid Wall\, is a traveling solo photography exhibit by way of a collaborative work with a collective of artists and activists. \nAisha Mershani is currently an Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Gettysburg College and combines their scholarly work with their media activism. \n_____________________________ \nGwendalynn Roebke (they/them) is an interdisciplinary scholar currently in their 2nd year of Penn’s philosophy PhD program. Their research interests center around trauma/learned helplessness\, structural oppression\, identity construction (of individuals and communities)\, and culpability of the action or inaction of marginalized peoples given what reality has presented them with (this also has to do with their involvement with knowledge creation through narratives built around shared “in group”identities that are the product of harmful practices of othering through subjugation). \nThe richer world anchored parts of their interests involve cross-examining attitudes in the wake of colonialism and imperialism from the SWANA region (more specifically North Africa) with those in Latin America (more specifically Colombia and its other coastal neighbors). \nFor a brief stint of time\, Gwendalynn was an active poet\, performing around the Denver metro area. In the summer of 2021\, they had a small chapbook released\, titled “A Bruxist Manifesto”. They hope to incorporate poetics into their academic work more\, and they currently coordinate the Anti-Colonial Poetry and Philosophy Working/Reading Group.

SUMMARY:Clay Play Open Studio Making
DESCRIPTION:Come out and touch some clay!\n\n\nThis is an open session clay making workshop. Each person will receive 1-2 pounds of clay per session and access to our basic tools and supplies. Pieces can be glazed with color and will be once fired and ready for pickup in 3-4 weeks. We will have limited colors available and suggest that you purchase your own Stroke and Coat glaze if you’d like consistent color and control. You’re welcome to bring any of your own tools. \nThe instructor leading your session will have a basic project that you can build if you aren’t working independantly. Some sessions will be more guided than others. \nAny unfinished clay pieces should go home with you. We will do our best to provide you with plastic and wrap enough to walk out with your piece so you can keep it moist enough to complete it and dry it ahead of firing. Please plan ahead if you know you were looking to make something complex that you’ll want to take home and continue working on. \nThis is an ongoing workshop offering. You can come to this session\, take your piece home to finish and dry it fully\, then bring it back in the future to have it fired. Or you can complete your piece in the 2 hour session and leave it at the studio to dry and be fired for you. We will have a clay artist on site that can answer technical questions and get you started with a project idea. Suggested age is adults but ages 7+up can attend along with a paying adult. \nFebraury 7th Session: Making Clay Stamps Run by Sea: You will have the opportunity to make a custom stamp alongside a small glazed item. Your instructor will walk you through the steps of creating a stamp using found materials and simple shapes. \nFebruary 28th Session: TBD \nAbout your instructors:Clay artist Sea Star (pronouns: they/them and she/her) has been making sculptures with clay since they were 2 years old. The material has been a great exercise in play\, design\, and patience. Over the years\, they have harvested and processed unique clays from Maine to Tennessee to Puerto Rico. In 2022 Sea earned a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from MICA and currently works as a Glaze and Decoration Technician for a Philadelphia pottery manufacturer. \nCassie Jones (pronouse: She/They) is the craft coven founder and lead organizer. She has her hands in most crafts but has a great passion for anything scultping. When running open studio you can expect a concentration on non-funtional applications and decorative projects. Currently working on staff at Black Hound Clay studio Cassie has also worked many years at Painting with a Twist in Philadelphia\, run a leather brand CUSP by Cassie\, is building a line of chain stitch embroidered patches\, as well as many other ventures since graduating from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. \nAbout the space:This event is located in the Starr Garden Playground rec center. When you enter the gates for the playground you will walk to the right of the building to the entrance that is facing Lombard Street. The rec center is mostly used for after school programs and kids camps but is empty in the evenings so they allow us to have adult programming. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snacks\, and there will be light music and a social studio atmosphere rather than a classroom. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.TheCraftCoven.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome The host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut and NYT bestselling author\, Joy-Ann Reid for the release of her book\, Medgar & Myrlie.\n\n\nWe are excited to welcome\, the host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut and New York Times bestselling author\, Joy-Ann Reid to discuss her newest book\, Medgar & Myrlie. \nJoy-Ann will be in conversation with author\, activist and the owner of Uncle Bobbie’s Marc Lamont Hill. Q&A to follow. \nAll copies of Medgar & Myrlie available will be signed. \nYou don’t want to miss this! \n****** \nAbout the Book: \nThe host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut and New York Times bestselling author of The Man Who Sold America traces the extraordinary lives and legacy of civil rights icons Medgar and Myrlie Evers\, situating Medgar Evers’s assassination as a catalyzing moment in American history. \nMyrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight\, married just one year later\, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. \nMedgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP\, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant\, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation\, lynching\, violence\, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.” They fought to desegregate the intractable University of Mississippi\, organized picket lines and boycotts\, despite repeated terroristic threats\, including the 1962 firebombing of their home\, where they lived with their three young children. \nOn June 12\, 1963\, Medgar Evers became the highest profile victim of Klan-related assassination of a black civil rights leader at that time; gunned down in the couple’s driveway in Jackson. In the wake of his tragic death\, Myrlie carried on their civil rights legacy; writing a book about Medgar’s fight\, trying to win a congressional seat\, and becoming a leader of the NAACP in her own right. \nIn this groundbreaking and thrilling account of two heroes of the civil rights movement\, Joy-Ann Reid uses Medgar and Myrlie’s relationship as a lens through which to explore the on-the-ground work that went into winning basic rights for Black Americans\, and the repercussions that still resonate today. \n****** \nDoors open at 6:00pm. \nBuy your book now and save on the General Admission fee! A ll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance also available through the rear parking lot.

SUMMARY:ETHNIC HERITAGE ENSEMBLE
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop celebrates the 50th anniversary of legendary Chicago percussionist Kahil El’Zabar’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble on Wednesday\, February 7 at Solar Myth. \nA leading proponent of the AACM’s “ancient to the future” philosophy\, multi-instrumentalist Kahil El’Zabar is widely acknowledged as one of the leaders of spiritual & afrofuturistic jazz\, collaborating with such heavyweights as Pharoah Sanders\, Nina Simone\, Archie Shepp\, Lester Bowie\, Billy Bang\, Hamiet Bluiett & David Murray. El’Zabar has led various incarnations of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble since 1973\, one year after returning from his studies at the University of Ghana. His goal was to combine concepts of African American music-making with the roots of traditional African music to produce something that carried the music into the 21st century and beyond. Half a century later\, this legendary band is tighter than ever\, continuing to broadcast their special brand of 21st century Griot music to rapt audiences worldwide.
