SUMMARY:Aisha Mershani Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Artist talk with Aisha Mershani in conjunction with their exhibition La La Lil Jidar: 20 Years Behind the Apartheid Wall in Palestine\n\n\nPlease join us on Wednesday\, January 17\, 7-9pm pm for an artist talk with Aisha Mershani in conjunction with their exhibition La La Lil Jidar: 20 Years Behind the Apartheid Wall in Palestine\, currently on view at Studio 34. \nAisha Mershani’s (they/them) photography focuses on the Israel Apartheid Wall\, visually exposing the realities on the ground in Palestine\, reframing the source of violence. For nearly 20 years Mershani has photographed military checkpoints\, popular demonstrations\, house demolitions\, destroyed villages\, and the daily lives of Palestinians living under the violence of the Israeli Apartheid. Most recently\, in 2022\, Mershani returned to the Occupied WestBank\, finding countless people that were photographed in 2004/2005 to photograph them again\, showing time behind the Wall. \nMershani’s photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries\, multiple publications\, as well as many internet news sites over the years to further the awareness of the ongoing situation on the ground in Palestine. They are also one of the artists in the reference book\, “Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists”. \nAisha Mershani was born in Las Vegas\, Nevada to an American Jewish mother and a Moroccan Muslim father. Mershani holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Redlands in California\, and a Master’s and a Ph.D. degree from the UNESCO program in Peace\, Development Studies\, and Conflict Transformation at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón de la Plana\, Spain. \nTheir work comes from a place of concern about the injustices occurring in the Middle East\, and a commitment to artistically expose these injustices and educate those outside of the region. For Mershani it is vital to view Palestine/Israel beyond US mainstream news framing. The expression of everyday life is the primary objective of their documentary photographic work. \namershani.com \n\n\nAbout Studio34 \nAccessibility note: there is a steep flight of stairs leading up to our space. \nSTORY \nSince 2008\, Studio 34 has cultivated a community; it has offered affordable yoga classes\, workshops\, and art shows for those who seek healing\, as well as space for wellness practitioners to provide various forms of therapy\, from acupuncture to massage to psychotherapy & more. \nIn early 2018\, community members Adrienne Dolberry and Kari Thompson took over as owners and remain committed to Studio 34 being a space of healing\, creativity\, and inclusivity for the West Philadelphia community and beyond. \nMISSION \nStudio 34 is more than a physical space. \nWe are an energy created by all those that enter and practice here. \nThis energetic space respects and honors all bodies – encouraging EveryBody/everyone to breathe and move in our healing-centered studio. \nUsing self-care and expression through yoga\, movement\, art and other healing modalities – we allow ourselves to reconnect\, realign and reclaim our lives as individuals. \nWe believe that individual self-care directly sustains and supports our community. \nWe are united together in dialogue\, creativity\, fun\, empowerment and holistic well-being. \nhttps://studio34yoga.com/

SUMMARY:Upcycled Handmade Books at Abyssinia
DESCRIPTION:Using old books and specialty paper we’ll sew our own handmade books!\n\n\nJoin us for an evening up taking apart and putting back together! We will repurpose old books\, cereal boxes\, and cardboard combined with specialty dyed papers to create our own books. You can bring your own paper if you’d like to customize your book into a lined notebook\, or if you have pieces that you want to incorperate into your book. Our finished books will act more as sketchbooks or artist books (unless you want to add the lines yourself?!) \nThe logistics: This is a low cost workshop that will offer supplies on a first come first served basis. Everyone signing up will have the opportunity to make their own book and we will have enough supplies for everyone. If you know you would like to repurpose an old book you can either bring your own hardcover book to take apart or you can arrive ON TIME to receive one of the first 10 that we have. Or if you’re going for more of a back pocket\, travel\, foldable situation then using cardboard and cardstock will be best for you! \nMost people will not finish their book with us but we will send you home with the supplies (everything but a sewing needle!) and instructions to hand sew your book yourself. If you arrive on time and get right to assembling your book you will absolutely finish with time to hang out and decorate a couple pages together. \nThis is a loose book making session that has a lot of room for personalization! Shown in the images are two different books made with this same style by two different artists. Show up with an open mind\, maybe some random paper you find in the recycling\, and some creative ideas and you’ll end up with something super FUN! \nCash only for the bar but they do have an ATM on site. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.supplychest.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes. \nAccessibility: This location is unfortunately only accessible by stairs. The event will be held on the second floor. Walk into the side entrance\, go directly up the steps\, and the door all the way to the left is where we will be. This event is held at a bar. It is not in the bar but there will be drinking present. Anyone age 16+up is welcome to participate with the craft project and will be able to access the event without walking into or through the bar.

SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Cole Arthur Riley - Black Liturgies
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we welcome award-winning author\, Cole Arthur Riley\n\n\nWe are excited to welcome\, New York Times bestselling author\, Cole Arthur Riley as she launches her latest book\, Black Liturgies. She will be joined in conversation with author and professor Brittney Cooper. A Q&A will follow the discussion. You do not want to miss this! \n****** \nA collection of prayer\, poetry\, and spiritual practice centering the Black interior world\, from the New York Times bestselling author of This Here Flesh and creator of Black Liturgies \n“A true spiritual balm for our troubled times.”—Michael Eric Dyson\, author of What Truth Sounds Like \nFor years\, Cole Arthur Riley was desperate for a spirituality she could trust. Amid ongoing national racial violence\, the isolation of the pandemic\, and a surge of anti-Black rhetoric in many Christian spaces\, she began dreaming of a more human\, more liberating expression of faith. She went on to create Black Liturgies\, a digital project that connects spiritual practice with Black emotion\, Black memory\, and the Black body. \nIn this book\, she brings together hundreds of new prayers\, along with letters\, poems\, meditation questions\, breath practices\, scriptures\, and the writings of Black literary ancestors to offer forty-three liturgies that can be practiced individually or as a community. Inviting readers to reflect on their shared experiences of wonder\, rest\, rage\, and repair\, and creating rituals for holidays like Lent and Juneteenth\, Arthur Riley writes with a poet’s touch and a sensitivity that has made her one of the most important spiritual voices at work today. \nFor anyone healing from communities that were more violent than loving; for anyone who has escaped the trauma of white Christian nationalism\, religious homophobia\, or transphobia; for anyone asking what it means to be human in a world of both beauty and terror\, Black Liturgies is a work of healing and empowerment\, and a vision for what might be. \n… \nDoors open at 6:00pm. \nBuy your book now and save on the General Admission fee! A ll tickets are non-refundable. \nStreet parking available. Wheelchair accessible entrance also available through the rear parking lot.

SUMMARY:All About Trees (Winter Course)
DESCRIPTION:WINTER COURSE: BOTANY SERIES – Free course with Professor Karen Snetselaar at the Philadelphia Horticultural Society\n\n\nWAGNER FREE INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE – WINTER 2024 COURSE: BOTANY SERIES\nAll About Trees with Professor Karen Snetselaar\n6 Tuesdays from January 16 – February 20\, 6:30 – 7:30 PM \nLocation: This course meets at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society\, located at 100 N. 20th Street in Philadelphia. \nThis course requires pre-registration. Separate registration is required for each student. Sign up here or call 215-763-6529 x14 for assistance. \n \nCourse Description\nThis course will explore several fundamental properties of trees and their importance in our world. Each week the class will consider what science can tell us about one of these properties and apply that knowledge to answer popular questions such as: How are trees able to grow so large? Do they really communicate with one another underground? Why are trees so vital to ameliorating storm water problems in urban areas? \n \nCourse Schedule\n1. Tuesday\, January 16\, 2024 – How Trees Become Trees: Secondary Growth All plant growth originates with groups of cells that are capable of dividing over and over. These groups of cells at the tips of plant stems allow them to get taller. This is called primary growth. Only trees (and shrubs) have stems that can get bigger around\, in a process called secondary growth. This week will focus on this defining quality of trees. We will see how it leads to the production of annual growth rings and how the massive appearance of tree trunks produced by secondary growth hides their vulnerability. \n2. Tuesday\, January 23\, 2024 – Leaves: Photosynthesis Factories The leaves are where nearly all the “stuff” that goes to make up a tree is produced from simple ingredients—water\, carbon dioxide\, and relatively small amounts of a few other molecules. The driving force for this production is energy from the sun that trees (like other plants) use to “fix” inert carbon dioxide gas into energy-containing sugars. All tree leaves use basically this same process. So why do leaves come in so many shapes and sizes? \n3. Tuesday\, January 30\, 2024 – Trees Underground: Taking up Minerals and Water Most plants have as much living material underground as they do above the ground\, and trees are not exceptions to this rule. Almost all the water and minerals that trees need to grow are taken in by their root systems. Trees develop complex relationships with underground microbes that enhance their abilities to take up these nutrients. This week will examine evidence for recent popular ideas about trees “communicating” with each other underground. \n4. Tuesday\, February 6\, 2024 – Transport in Trees Nearly all the water for that giant redwood or spreading oak comes from the soil—how does the tree get the water up to the leaves where it is needed for photosynthesis? Actually\, the water problem is more about how much water is lost through pores in leaves that they have to open to let the carbon dioxide in. A single tree can move over 100 gallons of water a day from the soil to the air. This is just one of the ways that trees help reduce negative effects of flooding from storms; we will talk about others too. \n5. Tuesday\, February 13\, 2024 — Seeing the Trees in the Forest By definition\, forests habitats are primarily defined by the species of trees found there. This week will focus on ways that trees influence other living things in different forest and woodland types. \n6. Tuesday\, February 20\, 2024 – City Trees While we tend to think of forests when we think about trees\, the truth is that trees have evolved for many different habitats. Some trees are adapted to meet the challenges of urban life\, such as compact soil\, reduced root area\, and periodic droughts. But even many of these adaptable trees are struggling with the combined effects of climate change and increasing urbanization. What can be done to help promote tree growth in our towns and cities? \nFebruary 27 is reserved for a make-up class\, if needed. \n \nSuggested Reading\nA list of reference materials will be provided. \n \nAbout the Professor\nDr. Karen Snetselaar is Professor Emeritus of Biology at Saint Joseph’s University. She has been a member of the faculty of the Wagner Free Institute of Science since 2000. Her research focuses on fungi and plant disease. She is also interested in urban ecology and in promoting public understanding of science\, especially science education outreach into K-12 schools. For 20 years\, she led the Wagner’s partnership with Saint Joseph’s University\, GeoKids LINKS\, which brings intensive science learning into North Philadelphia schools. \n \nFAQs\nWhat is the cost? \nWagner courses are free; donations are encouraged! \nAre there minimum age requirements to enter the course? \nThe adult lecture courses are offered on an introductory college level. They are open to anyone seeking an introduction to various areas of the sciences as well as those familiar with the subjects who wish to broaden and update their knowledge. The courses also provide an excellent opportunity for motivated junior high and high school students to supplement their current science courses and to help prepare them for further study in these fields at a college level. The courses are appropriate as well for teachers seeking to expand their knowledge. \nWhat are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the course? \nThe Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is located at the northwest corner of 20th and Arch Streets in Center City. It is convenient to multiple public transportation routes. The closest trolley stop is at 22nd and Market Streets. The location is also accessible via multiple bus routes and regional rail lines. There is on-street parking on the surrounding blocks\, and multiple paid parking options\, including a lot at 19th and Arch Streets. \nIs the building wheelchair accessible? \nYes \nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions? \nClick the “Contact the Organizer” link\, email communications@wagnerfreeinstitute.org\, or call 215-763-6529 x14. \n \nImages from top to bottom: Mangrove tree roots in jungle via CanvaPro.
