SUMMARY:Death & Life at Mt. Moriah Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Mount Moriah is the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania\, and home to some of our city’s finest grave architecture.\n\n\nMount Moriah is the largest cemetery in Pennsylvania\, and home to some of our city’s finest grave architecture. Trees and vines have engulfed the gravestones in some areas\, giving the place the atmosphere of a lost city in the jungle. Almost every style of tomb can be found here\, from Egyptian Revival to Art Nouveau. Guests will learn about the role of cemeteries as a place for leisure in the Victorian era\, as well as the influence of the Freemasons. Part wilderness and part sculpture-garden\, this city of the dead is by turns eerie and poignant. Join Hidden City as we peel back the canopy and reveal the wonders below. \n \nIMPORTANT DETAILS \nWe’ll meet at the main gate\, where Kingsessing dead-ends at 62nd Street.***If you’re using Google Maps type in 6191 Kingsessing Avenue*** \nThis tour requires significant walking\, so practical shoes and water are a must. There are plenty of ticks\, especially as the weather warms\, so we recommend long pants\, socks\, and most of all a careful check of oneself after the tour is over. \nTour guide John Vidumsky has been exploring abandoned spaces for as long as he can remember. He has an MA in history from Temple University\, where he studied 20th-century Russian history. John was Hidden City’s first intern! \nHidden City Members\, remember to use your promo codes for discounts! \nQuestions\, concerns\, conundrums? SUMMARY:Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join our partner\, Heather Houskeeper—also known as The Botanical Hiker—in exploring the array of edible and medicinal plants at Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary. Heather will provide valuable methods for confident identification\, ethical harvest\, and easy preparation. Many edible or medicinal plants may be found in your own backyard\, in the garden as common weeds\, or in other natural places you frequent.   \nLearn how to transform these wild plants into delicious snacks\, medicinal teas\, and home remedies. The walk will be easy to moderate with many stops along the way to meet the plants. \nPlease note that this walk is educational in nature and that no plants will be harvested from the preserve. All of Natural Lands’ properties are Leave No Trace; foraging is not permitted. \nJust some of the plants you might see on this walk include staghorn sumac and birch (pictured below). \n \nPhotos provided by the instructor. \nAbout the instructor: \nHeather Houskeeper\, “The Botanical Hiker\,” is an herbalist\, author\, and founder of the School of Plant and Place Connection in Milford\, PA. She holds certifications in herbal medicine\, botany\, taxonomy\, and forest therapy. Heather has hiked thousands of miles on long-distance trails—including the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine—identifying\, exploring\, and foraging wild plants along the way. These journeys have deeply inspired her work as an herbal educator. Since 2011\, Heather has guided others into the natural world through plant walks\, herbal workshops\, and seminars. She is the author of three plant-inspired books and the Wild Food columnist for Dirt Magazine. Heather believes plants are a conduit for connection with the natural world\, and that by attuning to nature\, we foster individual and collective wellness. SUMMARY:Mural Dedication! The Struggle for Absolute Equality
DESCRIPTION:A mural with a NEW story to tell… Juneteenth was just the beginning…\n\n\nRain Date: Sunday\, November 3rd\, 2024 \n \nThere’s Levels to This Story…\n…layers and history\, both lived and revealed\, that depict the “long walk to freedom” for millions of people throughout this country. As part of the 2023 multi-city ‘Absolute Equality’ Mural Project\, the Germantown ArtHaus introduced Philadelphia’s 1st Juneteenth mural to Germantown. Founder and Lead Artist\, Keisha Whatley shared the story behind each of the three levels of the mural that depict: \n\nPre-Colonial West Africa\,\nThe Trans-Atlantic slave trade\, and\nJuneteenth\n\nBut there’s another level; another layer to this story… \nUnfortunately in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger relayed the decree that “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States\, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves\, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”…those committed to the economy\, power and position of slavery didn’t get the memo so a new era began. \n \nThe Struggle for Absolute Equality…\n\n\n\nThe TRANSFORMING TRAGEDY Community Mural Project\nSince May of 2021\, four courageous Community Artists have grappled with a creative challenge that sought to visually display the juxtaposition between the loss\, rage and despair of this struggle for equality and the undying hope for a future of equality\, peace and joy: \nCreate a piece of artwork (painted\, 3-D relief\, etc.) that honors the life of a victim of police brutality or gun violence AND points to a future where we need not create a mural like this ever again. \n\n\n\nJoin us at The Germantown ArtHaus for a one-of-a-kind Mural Dedication; one of grit\, persistence\, pain\, triumph\, protests\, loss and hope. Set against a backdrop of history\, each artists’ work sounds the horn of hope and possibility that only art can. \nEnjoy each artist’s installation including their 7 foot tall works of art\, installation decor and an interactive experience that will ignite your senses and spark your imagination: \n\nVictoria Holmes: @vic_toriaholmes “Positive Pockets”\nKeshida Layone: @keshida.layone “His Presence”\nPaige Lewis: @PinkTinyAngryMighty “Flowers of Remembrance”\nKathryn Pannepacker: @kpannepacker “Someone’s Someone”\n\nDon’t miss out on this opportunity to immerse yourself in creativity and community! \n\n\n\n\n\nCheck our website’s calendar to stay in the know about upcoming events!

SUMMARY:Materialize
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition: Da Vinci Art Alliance is proud to partner with Craft Movie Club to present “Materialize\,” an exhibition that showcases sixteen artists\, all working in their chosen material of ceramics\, wood\, fiber\, metal and glass to respond to James Whale’s 1933 classic\, “The Invisible Man.” \nIn the film\, scientist Jack Griffin uses an extraction from an obscure flower—originally used to bleach textiles—to render himself invisible. How\, “Materialize” asks\, do the artists on display mirror the scientist at the heart of the film? How do they manipulate the natural world to transform their raw materials into powerful\, symbolic objects? And do they\, in performing their craft\, ever transform themselves? \nMaterialize will be on view in Gallery 1 at Da Vinci Art Alliance starting October 31 until November 17. The opening reception will take place on Saturday\, November 2\, from 4-7 pm.

SUMMARY:Twilight Tour at Mount Vernon Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:For the FIRST TIME EVER\, tour the cemetery at NIGHT and hear stories about its dark history and bright future!! Not for the faint of heart!!\n\n\nReady yourself for a walk on the (literal) dark side of Mount Vernon Cemetery (MVC). Closed to the public for almost two decades\, this fall we open its creaking black gates for ONE NIGHT ONLY to venture on a unique off-road journey through MVC’s mysterious past. \nRacing against the setting sun\, this adults-only early-evening tour showcases the more macabre aspects of MVC’s history; tales of murder\, suicide\, and hoodoo that are guaranteed to send shivers up your spine and make you once again declare: I’m afraid of the dark. Who knows who or even what we’ll find? Spoiler alert: Be prepared for the uncanny as MVC is covered in\, as the New York Post declared: “creepy stuffed animals that inexplicably appear overnight.” \nOnce darkness falls\, we’ll switch on our flashlights and stumble through the pitch black of the night – seriously\, we have no electricity so trust us\, it gets crazy dark – to the center of the 28 acre property. There\, we’ll participate in an epic on-site spiritual cleansing ceremony\, conducted by members of SOUTH STREET CIRCLE\, Philadelphia’s own Neo-Pagan ritual group. \nIt’s a night like no other! You bring the flashlights. We’ll bring the fear!! \nThis tour is sponsored and conducted by members of the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery and is part of MVC’s 2024 Fall Festival Tour Season. \n \nContent warning/Reminders: \n\nMVC’s Twilight Tour will include discussions of an adult nature that may be distressing to some visitors. Topics include tales of murder\, suicide\, death\, and infant mortality via disease.\nThis tour is for ADULTS ONLY. Anyone under the age of 18 will be turned away.\nPlease meet at MVC’s main gate. Located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues.\nThe tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather\, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes and long pants.\nIt is essential to arrive on time. Tour leaves at precisely 4:40. If you arrive late\, once the gate is closed and locked\, there is no coming back for you. \nMVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such\, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided to you upon arrival.\nAll visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery’s conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund\, and you will be banned from participating in future MVC public events.

Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. SUMMARY:Mural Arts & East Market Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a happy hour exploring the Cradle mural by Diogo Machado\, featuring art demos\, live music\, Q&A\, and food at Jefferson Plaza!\n\n\nCelebrate one of Center City’s signature murals\, Cradle\, by Lisbon-based artist Diogo Machado. Cradle is an awe-inspiring tile installation that embodies the essence of Philadelphia’s unique character. The mural’s design references Philadelphia’s history of being a city of many firsts\, with nods to centuries of tile-making tradition from the artist’s native country. \nThis happy hour event is dedicated to exploring the story behind this signature project — produced by Mural Arts Philadelphia on behalf of National Real Estate Advisors\, National Real Estate Development\, and Jefferson\, and celebrating public art throughout the East Market. Attendees will enjoy the premiere of two short videos about the mural\, informal Q&A with the project’s curator\, and an opportunity to share thoughts with Diogo Machado about his artistic innovation. This event is part of the larger East Market Art Experience. \nThe event will include live music\, artist demonstrations\, artist Q&As\, and food from Market East’s food truck\, vendors\, and restaurants.
