SUMMARY:From Milkweed Soup to Hmong Sticky Corn: Community Connection through Culturally Relevant Food Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Explore the vibrant community-driven gardening projects at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in this engaging webinar. A free admission 16-acre public garden in Madison\, Wisconsin\, Olbrich Botanical Gardens seeks to be a community resource where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Join Olbrich’s Herb Garden horticulturist\, Erin Presley\, as she spins the tale of two community-based gardening projects at Olbrich. \nThe Indigenous Garden\, created with local Ho-Chunk tribal members\, offers opportunities to connect\, converse\, and appreciate the history and majesty of food plants significant in Midwestern First Nations cultures. Meanwhile\, the Hmong Garden\, which debuted in 2023\, honors the traditions and resourcefulness of the 60\,000 Hmong residents who migrated to Wisconsin after the Vietnam War. Both gardening projects were led by young women from their respective cultural groups and engaged guests with hands-on activities\, bilingual signage\, and of course – veggie tastings! Please join us to learn more about these uplifting\, collaborative gardening projects and principles that could be applied in your own community. \nAbout Erin Presley\nErin Presley left her heart at Olbrich Botanical Gardens while interning there in 2005. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, she gardened for nearly a decade in the private sector before returning to Olbrich in 2014\, where she manages the Herb\, Woodland\, and Pond Gardens. Her interests include native woodland plantings\, sedges\, low-maintenance and drought-tolerant gardening styles\, recycling woody debris\, and all things related to herbs\, vegetables\, and cooking. In addition to teaching at OBG\, Erin loves talking plants and collaborating with herb societies\, master gardeners\, and local community organizations. Never shy when it comes to sharing the joy of gardening\, she has appeared on the nationally syndicated podcast Cultivating Place and Wisconsin Public Radio’s Garden Talk and is a contributor to the print and online content of Fine Gardening magazine. \n  \n\nDATE\nDecember 06\, 2023 \n\n\nTIME\n12:00 pm – 1:00 pm\n\n\nCOST\n\nGeneral: $20\nPHS Members: Free \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY\n\nMore information will be provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:WINE+WHINE // Advocacy\, Sips\, and Networking
DESCRIPTION:After election season\, there’s no better way to regroup and prepare for the year ahead than by gathering with like-minded individuals who are committed to uplifting their community. On Wednesday\, December 6\, 2023 at 5:30pm the NExT Philadelphia Advocacy Committee will be hosting WINE+WHINE | Advocacy\, Sips & Networking at BlacOak Tasting Room (6139 Ridge Avenue Philadelphia PA 19128). \nLetters are an extremely effective way of communicating with your elected officials. Many legislators believe that a letter represents not only the position of the writer but also many other constituents who did not take the time to write. At this unique gathering\, you will have the opportunity to network with passionate community advocates who share your vision for a better future\, and participate in a special workshop to empower your voice and engage with your elected officials in a meaningful way. \nDuring the mixer\, we will have cards for you to personalize and send to your elected officials. These cards go beyond the usual holiday greetings. They serve as a “gentle” reminder of the work we expect from our representatives when they return to session. Our storytelling workshop\, featuring special guests\, will teach you how to effectively share your story and advocate for policy change. \nBut there’s EVEN more to the evening than just advocacy and networking. The BlacOak Wine Club\, our gracious host for the event\, takes pride in highlighting underserved black-owned wine and spirit brands that are trailblazing in their industry. By savoring their offerings\, you support an essential lifeline to black-owned wine brands\, giving them the space they deserve in an industry traditionally occupied by those lacking melanin. And our partner\, the Hip Hop Caucus\, is a national non-profit\, non-partisan organization that connects the Hip Hop community to the civic process to build power and create positive change. \nLet’s raise our glasses\, share our thoughts\, and collectively make a positive impact on our community. WINE+WHINE is more than just an event; it’s a platform for change\, a celebration of creativity\, and a toast to empowerment. RSVP now and be a voice for your community! \nPlease note that all BlacOak events are conducted in strict accordance with Pennsylvania liquor laws\, and the wines you’ll enjoy at the tasting room are exclusively produced in Pennsylvania. You must be 21 YEARS OLD OR ABOVE TO ATTEND. \n👔 Dress: Professional Attire / Business Casual

SUMMARY:Exploring Islamic Approaches to Environmental Care
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Religion & Environment Series – Session 3: Islam\n\n\nExploring Religion & Environment Series\nJoin us for a series of lunchtime conversations this Fall and Winter focused on exploring religion and the environment. We will be joined by experts\, theologians\, activists\, and thinkers for deep dives into different religious traditions. By blending informative education with ground-breaking discourse\, we hope that wherever you are on your own journey exploring faith and our changing world\, you will find value in this foray. \n \nSession 3: Exploring Islamic Approaches to Environmental Care\nIn this month’s conversation\, we are exploring the Islamic tradition. Imam Christopher Caras will share the Islamic theology for environmental responsibility\, as well as specific injunctions from Islamic Law. He will briefly touch on how Muslims throughout history have worked with\, and not against\, their natural surroundings. Sevim Kalyoncu will talk about the work of Green Muslims and how in that role she helps American Muslims connect with nature and recognize it as a book of God as well as understand the role of humans as khalifa\, or stewards of the earth. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Melinda Krokus a professor of comparative religion and a student in the Ansari Qadiri Rifai Sufi Order. Bring your lunch and your questions – we can’t wait to see you there! \nOur series co-sponsors: \nBetter Path Coalition\, Delaware Interfaith Power & Light\, Green Muslims \n\n\n\n\nDr. Melinda Krokus has been on the Board of Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light since 2018 and currently serves as Vice President. She is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Marywood University (Scranton\, PA)\, where she is also Chair of the Environmental Studies program. Her scholarly work has taken her to Turkey\, the Balkans\, South Africa\, Mauritius\, and across Europe\, where she has seen the effects of climate change first hand intersecting with war and its aftermath as well as political and social unrest. Inspired by Seyyed Hossein Nasr\, Sallie McFague\, and the Dalai Lama at a 1991 conference called Spirit and Nature\, Melinda went on to study conservation ecology and religious traditions of the world at Prescott College\, Harvard Divinity School\, and Boston University spending several years working for the Forum on Religion and Ecology. As a Muslim\, she has been a student of Shaykh Taner Ansari of the Qadiri Rifa’i Sufi order since 1994 and currently serves on the Board of the Islamic Center of Scranton. She has witnessed the devastating loss of adequate habitat and biodiversity on this planet take place within a clear and scientific context that increasingly understands the anthropogenic nature of our collective climate reality. She has chosen to work with PAIPL because she believes that in order to make the shift toward a planet of flourishing habitat\, biodiversity\, and justice\, a morality driven by love and knowledge is necessary. \n\n\n\nGrowing up in Alabama surrounded by woods and creeks\, Sevim discovered at an early age that her most direct connection with God came through nature. To this day\, she still finds peace in natural surroundings and holds a deep concern regarding humankind’s responsibility as vicegerent of the earth. She is involved with multiple local climate action groups and dedicated to helping educate youth about the importance of environmental awareness for spiritual\, mental\, and physical well-being. She holds a B.S. from Georgetown and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and has many years of nonprofit experience in Washington\, DC\, and the San Francisco Bay Area. She is also a naturalist interpreter and a yoga instructor. \n\n\n\nChris Caras converted to Islam as a high school junior in October 2001 in his hometown of Peoria\, Illinois. He studied Islam formally in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia\, earning degrees in Arabic\, Islamic theology\, history\, and legal theory\, in the Arabic medium with honors. He worked in St Louis\, Missouri for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)\, and taught for a private Islamic school while serving as an imam on the Illinois side of East Saint Louis. In summer 2019\, Chris became the Imam for the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh. Chris’ wife of 15 years is an accomplished Quran recital teacher originally from Pakistan. The introverted couple have three rambunctious children.

It’s because we’ve been doing this for a very long time! Some of our iconic trees were planted in the 1850s and still tower over visitors in the landscape. Join Tyler docent and Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Dave Charlton on this leisurely-paced walk to experience their majesty\, learn about their role in supporting the ecosystem\, and hear the tales. \nAbout your guide: Dave is a long-time Tyler volunteer\, a founding member of our docent program\, and a certified Pennsylvania Master Naturalist. \nCheck in at the Visitor Center\, where you’ll meet your guide. As with any walk at Tyler\, sturdy shoes are suggested. Participants should bring water and perhaps a walking stick and bug repellent. PLEASE NOTE: Strollers may not be ideal on this tour. We recommend a carrier to bring an infant or young child. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \nMEMBERS (sign in for your discount!): $5 per adult; $3 per child ages 3-17; no charge for children ages two and under. Please register all participants. \nNON-MEMBERS:  $21 per adult; $13 per child ages 3-17; no charge for children ages two and under. Please register all participants. \nGUEST PASS HOLDERS (for non-members only): $5 per adult guest; $3 per child guest ages 3-17; no charge for children ages two and under. Please register all participants. Guest passes should be submitted for each participant\, regardless of age. \nREGISTER HERE
