SUMMARY:Giants of the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Now that the leaves have fallen\, the giants of the forest have revealed themselves. No\, not the fairy tale variety\, the trees! While walking the trails of the Schuylkill Center in the summer months\, our most gigantic trees are tucked away from sight\, obscured by cork trees\, devil’s walking sticks\, and sometimes their own young saplings. Now that winter days are upon us\, the largest trees on our preserve can be appreciated in their full glory! \nJoin us on January 20th\, from 2-4pm\, meeting at the Schuylkill Center Visitor Center for spiked hot apple cider and a guided hike to appreciate the largest trees of the Schuylkill Center. While on our walk\, we will admire our gigantic friends not only for their magnitude\, but for the history that they tell. We will learn ways to interpret forest communities\, and see how historic homesteads and agricultural cultivation has altered the landscape. Please feel free to BYOM (Bring your own Mug!) or use paper travel cups provided. We look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Greenhouse Yoga at the Horticulture Center
DESCRIPTION:Connect with others and strengthen your practice with Greenhouse Yoga! \n\n\nDATE\nSunday\, January 21\, 2024 \n\n\n\nTIME\n10:00am – 11:00am \n\n\n\nLOCATION\nFairmount Park Horticulture Center\n100 N. Horticulture Dr.\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19131 \n\nFairmount Park Conservancy is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of Greenhouse Yoga at the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center on select dates throughout the winter. \nEscape the winter blues and connect with your practice in the lush\, tropical setting of the Horticulture Center’s greenhouse. These all-level classes take place on select Sundays and will be led by a rotation of experienced teachers from Tula Yoga. \nABOUT THE HORTICULTURE CENTER: The Horticulture Center in West Fairmount Park\, a modern exhibition hall and greenhouse\, was built for the Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. It sits on the site of the former Horticultural Hall\, an 1876 Centennial Exposition building. Within its walls are a visitor center and greenhouse where one can see many tropical plants and a fine collection of statues interspersed in the greenery. The grounds are open daily. The greenhouse has select open hours that they list on their Instagram page. \nTICKET PRICES: Pay what you can – $10\, $15\, or $20\n[ What do we mean by “Pay what you can”? “Pay what you can” is a simple way of describing a sliding scale or tiered pricing system\, which is becoming a preferred model for equitable access to programs and services in order to accommodate participants of varied income levels. Not sure what to pay? Please refer to this Sliding Scale Pricing FAQ for additional info. ] \n\n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nPlease bring your own yoga mat. The floor of the Horticulture Center is similar to an outdoor surface. You may want to bring something to place under your yoga mat (both for padding and to keep your yoga mat clean) or be prepared to clean your yoga mat after the class because it will get a little dirty!\nBring your own water and snack.\nThere are bathrooms available inside the Horticulture Center.\nAppropriate for adults and mature adolescents (minors must be ticketed and accompanied by a guardian).\nThere are bathrooms available before and after class.\nDue to the large size of the class\, we recommend yogis have at least one yoga class under their belt.\nParks and Rec staff are now locking the north entry gate behind the Please Touch Museum. The ONLY entrance available is the south entry off of Montgomery Drive.

SUMMARY:Upcycled Handmade Books at Cherry Street Pier
DESCRIPTION:Using old books and specialty paper we’ll sew our own handmade books!\n\n\nJoin us for an evening up taking apart and putting back together! We will repurpose old books\, cereal boxes\, and cardboard combined with specialty binding techniques. You can bring your own paper if you’d like to customize your book into a lined notebook\, or if you have pieces that you want to incorperate into your book. Our finished books will act more as sketchbooks or artist books (unless you want to add the lines yourself?!) \nThe logistics: Everyone signing up will have the opportunity to make their own book and we will have enough supplies for everyone. If you know you would like to repurpose an old book you can either bring your own hardcover book to take apart or you can use one of the many we have to offer. If you’re going for more of a back pocket\, travel\, foldable situation then using cardboard and cardstock will be best for you! Either way we have all the supplies\, but welcome any personalized additions that you may want to bring as well. \nWe will be focusing on making the book rather than filling it. If you have previous book binding skills then you may have time to start decorating and filling your book with collage supplies that we have on hand. \nSome people will not finish their book with us but we will send you home with the supplies (everything but a sewing needle!) and instructions to hand sew your book yourself. If you arrive on time and get right to assembling your book you can absolutely finish with time to hang out and decorate a couple pages together. \nThis is a loose book making session that has a lot of room for personalization! Shown in the images are different books made with this same style by different artists. Show up with an open mind\, maybe some random paper you find in the recycling\, and some creative ideas and you’ll end up with something super FUN! \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a paper and collage based art show we that will be on display next door in studio 15. Check out that Mixed Media Mayem event \nThe Location: This event is held at The Craft Coven’s space in Cherry Street Pier. We are located in studio 14 on the second floor. Unfortunately there are no elevators to the second floor. You will need to go up a very large flight of steps to get to the workshop. The space is heated/cooled inside the pier and there are bathrooms located on site (on the first floor). There are often installations and events around the pier\, and the larger space is open from 12-8pm everyday.

SUMMARY:Understanding Outcomes from the Latest UN Climate Conference
DESCRIPTION:A discussion on the key outcomes of COP28\, the UN Climate Conference.\n\n\nAgainst the backdrop of an escalating climate crisis and another hottest year on record\, the annual United Nations Climate Conference (COP28) convened in the United Arab Emirates to chart a path forward. Policymakers made key strides at the conference\, agreeing to “transition away from fossil fuels;” operationalizing the loss and damage fund; and laying out targets to build resiliency under a Global Goal on Adaptation. The COP Presidency also co-hosted the first-ever Local Climate Action Summit for city leaders and dedicated a day to discussing the climate-health nexus. \nWhile these outcomes and events marked critical steps forward\, were these strides big enough to keep global warming below 2°C and avoid the worst impacts of climate change\, as called for by the Paris Agreement? Based on this latest climate stock take\, can the world correct its course? If so\, what needs to happen next? \nPlease join Perry World House for this discussion featuring Perry World House Fellows and Advisors: Lolita Jackson; Stephen Hammer; and Wolfgang Blau\, moderated by Michael Weisberg. \n\n\nSPEAKERS\n \nWolfgang Blau is the managing partner of the Brunswick Group’s global climate hub and an expert in climate communications. Blau is an advisor to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. He is also a trustee of Internews.org and the Bonn Institute for Journalism and Constructive Dialogue. \nStephen Hammer has over thirty years of experience working on climate change and sustainability issues at the global\, national\, and local levels. At the Bank\, he advises senior management on global climate policy matters\, has led on major global climate partnerships\, including those with the G7 and G20\, and represents the Bank in international fora. Most recently\, he served as a technical advisor to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Transitional Committee\, charged with setting up a new global fund on loss and damage. Hammer was previously a full-time lecturer on energy policy and planning at MIT and Columbia University. He holds degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science\, Harvard University\, and the University of California\, Davis \nLolita K. Jackson MBE is the executive director of sustainable cities at Sustainable Development Capital LLP\, a multibillion-pound FTSE 250 climate investment firm. SUMMARY:Film Screening: PARDON ME
DESCRIPTION:Join us at West Phila Skills Initiative for Shuja Moore’s new film Pardon Me\, which examines the pardon and justice system in Philadelphia.\n\n\nThis session is part of the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia’s GPLEX360 series. It will be hosted at West Philadelphia Skills Initiative. \nPardon Me is a documentary short film that presents the case for how pardons can give individuals the opportunity to live as full citizens and contribute to their best ability\, at the same time uplifting the lower income communities in which they live. \nThe screening of this 30 minute film will be followed by a conversation with the director and experts in the pardon space\, and a discussion about Philadelphia-area challenges and opportunities. \nThe film features interviews with key civic leaders and the stories of two people going through the pardon process\, one of whom received a pardon. \nThe United States has the highest number of citizens with criminal records in the world: Nearly one in three American adults. Pennsylvania has historically had the fifth largest population of incarcerated people and the third largest population of people under carceral control (including people on parole and probation) in the country. Until recently\, Philadelphia has had among the highest numbers of its citizens arrested and convicted of crime\, with over 90% of those in state prison being released back to to poor communities. \nGiven the tremendous challenge of finding employment with a past criminal history\, it’s unsurprising that these areas of our country have high rates of unemployment and poverty.

Gregg will share his experiences with what he’s found to be the best native deer-resistant plants and how to create a strategy for rebuffing deer with effective and safe natural deer repellent products. \nThis program takes place online Wednesday\, January 24\, 2024. \n About the Instructor: \nGregg Tepper is a professional horticulturist\, lecturer\, consultant\, and life-long native plant enthusiast. He has been in the public horticulture industry for over 30 years and has helped steward\, guide\, and promote various public gardens including Mt. Cuba Center and Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek. He is the Senior Horticulturist at the Arboretum at Laurel Hill in Philadelphia\, PA\, comprised of two historic cemetery properties totaling 265 acres\, where he co-manages the horticulture interns and staff. His primary focus is on creating and stewarding multiple ecologically-sound display garden areas at both properties including the Rock Garden\, the historic Medallion Garden\, the award-winning Chapel Gardens and Nature’s Sanctuary\, a multiple-award-winning SITES Gold certified green burial landscape. His work brings him much joy through the many opportunities to educate the public\, collaborate with fellow public gardens and work closely with specialty nurseries to custom grow vast collections of unique and garden-worthy plants that\, through the building of diverse plant communities\, create what he calls “gardens to feel good about”. \nGregg has lectured extensively in the United States as well as the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and Wisley in Great Britain. He is co-author of the popular book “Deer-Resistant Native Plants for the Northeast” about which he lectures regularly. He is currently working on two new books\, “Mirabelle visits a Garden: A Native Plant Garden Adventure”\, a co-authored book for children about native plants and their many wildlife benefits and “The Sensory Appeal of Native Plants: A Wildflower Celebration”. His happiest pastimes are discovering new plants\, scouring on-line plant\, shrub\, and tree catalogs\, stewarding his own city garden\, and reading about his favorite subject\, Horticulture. \nRegister Now \nMember Registration \n

SUMMARY:Clay Play Open Studio Making
DESCRIPTION:Come out and touch some clay.\n\n\nThis is an open session clay making workshop. Each person will receive 1-2 pounds of clay per session and access to our basic tools and supplies. Pieces can be glazed with colo and will be once fired and ready for pickup in 3-4 weeks. We will have limited colors available and suggest that you purchase your own Stroke and Coat glaze if you’d like consistent color and control. You’re welcome to bring any of your own tools. \nUnfinished clay pieces should go home with you. We will do our best to provide you with plastic and wrap enough to walk out with your piece so you can keep it moist enough to complete it and dry it ahead of firing. Please plan ahead if you know you were looking to make something complex. \nThis is an ongoing workshop offering. You can come to this session\, take your piece home to finish and dry it fully\, then bring it back in the future to have it fired. Or you can complete your piece in the 2 hour session and leave it at the studio to dry and be fired for you. We will have a clay artist on site that can answer technical questions and get you started with a project idea. Suggested age is adults but ages 7+up can attend along with a paying adult. \nOrganized by The Craft Coven\, this event is part of a community oriented series of creative enrichment projects focused on affordability for all. For more information on the group’s missions and to get involved more widely check out https://www.TheCraftCoven.org and become a Member for all the inside opportunities and classes. \nAbout the space:This event is located in the Starr Garden Playground rec center. When you enter the gates for the playground you will walk to the right of the building to the entrance that is facing Lombard Street. The rec center is mostly used for after school programs and kids camps but is empty in the evenings so they allow us to have adult programming. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle or snacks\, and there will be light music and a social studio atmosphere rather than a classroom.
