SUMMARY:Wagner's February 1st Saturday Open House - Endangered Species
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Wagner museum and the collections\, and learn all about endangered species!\n\n\nFEBRUARY’S FIRST SATURDAY OPEN HOUSE\nEndangered Species\, with artist and author Allen Crawford\nDid you know that the Endangered Species Act passed 50 years ago? This landmark legislation has protected hundreds of endangered and critically threatened species since 1973. Among the species it helped recover from near-extinction are the peregrine falcon and the humpback whale. But many species remain in danger and some have been lost forever. \nThe theme of our February First Saturday is protecting endangered animals. We will be joined by acclaimed artist and author Allen Crawford\, whose most recent book\, A Wild Promise\, beautifully represents in lavish full-color illustrations eighty animals that embody the spirit and commitment of the Endangered Species Act. He will give short talks about his own passion for nature and for preserving the habitats – oceans\, mountains\, deserts\, prairies\, and forests – where animals live. Buy your own copy of his book in our shop and Allen will sign it for you! \nWhere better to experience the astonishing diversity of nature and to see many rare and protected species than at the Wagner! The Exhibit Hall will be open for self-guided exploration of the natural history collection throughout the day. Explore our 100\,000 specimens\, including ancient fossils\, glowing minerals and animals from around the globe. Wander at your own pace or follow the path of one of our themed scavenger hunts\, including our endangered animals scavenger hunt. You can also pick up pencils and paper to draw from the specimens on display\, including our pair of Ivory-billed wordpeckers. \nAllen Crawford will be on hand to sign books and discuss his work in the Lecture Hall. \n \nThings to Know Before Your Visit\n• Walk-in visitors are welcome. Advance registration is appreciated and will speed up your entry to the museum. \n• Masks are recommended but not required. \n• There is no coat check or place to stow personal items – please travel light. \n• To protect the specimens and our historic interiors\, photography is not allowed in the museum and food and drink are not permitted in the building. \n•The Institute does not have a parking lot. Street parking on Montgomery Avenue and 17th Street is free and metered parking is available on Bouvier Street and Cecil B. Moore. \n \nA dream that keeps growing… \nIn 1855\, William Wagner had a dream of providing free science education to anyone who wanted to learn\, regardless of background or ability to pay. Today\, the Wagner offers more programs to more people than ever before! Your support helps us provide free education\, not only through the museum\, but through a wide range of courses\, lectures\, field trips\, and children’s science programs. Donations also assist us in caring for the museum and library collections and in preserving our wonderful building\, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990. To learn more about what we do please visit our website. \n \nRegistration Information\nIn keeping with its original charter\, admission is FREE—donations are suggested to ensure the future and quality of Wagner’s free education programs and to preserve its National Landmark building and collections. \nSuggested Donations \n$25/Family \n$10/adult \n$5/student \nFor any questions\, please email tickets@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x17. \nIf you would like to check your membership status or become a member\, please email KellyT@wagnerfreeinstitute.org or call 215-763-6529 x11. \n \nImage: Blackburn’s Sphinx Month\, from A Wild Promise. SUMMARY:Building Bridges: An Evening of Art in Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Building Bridges\, a multi-media showcase featuring the artwork of incarcerated students enrolled at Eastern University.\n\n\nJoin us for Building Bridges\, a multi-media showcase featuring the artwork of incarcerated students enrolled in Eastern University’s Prison Education Program (PEP). Renowned Philadelphia poet Ursula Rucker and talented multi-instrumental musician Miles Orion Butler will co-host the event for the evening\, leading participants through a showcase of visual art\, music\, poetry\, theater\, and dance created by PEP students and local community artists. During the summer of 2023\, students participating in a PEP creative arts course at SCI-Chester designed the works of art to be shared on this evening\, but due to their confines\, can’t be physically present with us to do so– our collective hope is to build bridges via creative expression so that space can be made for them to share their hard work and their passions. Join us for an evening of reflection\, connection\, and creation in community. This event was sponsored by both Eastern University and Swarthmore’s Lang Center for Civic and Social Engagement.

SUMMARY:Uncle Bobbie's X Clay Cane - Book Signing/ Meet & Greet
DESCRIPTION:Join Uncle Bobbie’s as we celebrate the launch of political commentator and radio host\, Clay Cane’s newest book\, The Grift\n\n\nJoin us as we welcome journalist\, author\, political commentator\, and radio host\, Clay Cane for the launch of his book\, The Grift: The Downward Spiral of Black Republicans from the Party of Lincoln to the Cult of Trump. \nGet an opportunity to meet Clay and have your copy of The Grift signed. \nYou do not want to miss this! \n——– \nAbout the Book: \nPart history and part cultural analysis\, The Grift chronicles the nuanced history of Black Republicans. Clay Cane lays out how Black Republicanism has been mangled by opportunists who are apologists for racism. \nAfter the Civil War\, the pillars of Black Republicanism were a balanced critique of both political parties\, civil rights for all Americans\, reinventing an economy based on exploitation\, and\, most importantly\, building thriving Black communities. How did Black Republicanism devolve from revolutionaries like Frederick Douglass to the puppets in the Trump era? \nWhether it’s radical conservatives like South Carolina Senator Tim Scott or Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas\, they are consistently viral news and continuously upholding egregious laws at the expense of their Black brethren. Black faces in high places providing cover for explicit bigotry is one of the greatest threats to the liberation of Black and brown people. By studying these figures and their tactics\, Cane exposes the grift and lays out a plan to emancipate our future. \n—— \nEach ticket comes with a copy of The Grift. \nAll sales are final. \nOrder of entry will be on a first come\, first serve basis.

SUMMARY:The Disappointed Tourist Opening Reception + Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Ellen Harvey: The Disappointed Tourist on Wednesday\, Jan. 31 from 5-7 pm.\n\n\nEllen Harvey: The Disappointed TouristOn view: January 16 – March 9\, 2024Opening reception and artist talk: Wednesday\, January 31\, 5-7 pm (artist talk begins at 5:30 pm) \nThe Disappointed Tourist is an ongoing project for which Ellen Harvey is making paintings of lost sites suggested by members of the public in response to the question: Is there any place that you would like to visit or revisit that no longer exists? The exhibition has been traveling and growing since 2019 with 300 sites painted so far. Each painting includes the name of the site and the date on which it ceased to exist. Over the summer of 2023 the Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum\, in partnership with Creative Glassboro\, Glassboro Public Library\, Glassboro Historical Society\, and Heritage Glass Museum\, solicited submissions from the local community. Nine suggested sites have been added to this new iteration of the installation including the Whitney Brother’s Glass Factory\, Salem Oak\, Bay Point\, Zee Orchards\, Eighty Acres\, Palace of Depression\, Vineland Speedway\, Veterans Stadium\, and grandparent’s backyard. These new works will debut in the exhibition at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. \nThe project was inspired by the urge to repair what has been lost due to the forces of war\, time\, ideology\, gentrification\, and natural disasters. We live in a world that often feels as though it is vanishing before our eyes. The Disappointed Tourist attempts to honor the trauma underlying the nostalgia that results from our collective and individual losses\, while celebrating the human attachment to places both real and aspirational. It tries to create a level playing field in which personal losses and larger cultural losses can meet and be recognized and create a new conversation about our love for our physical environment\, harnessing nostalgia to create empathy rather than division. \n To learn more about the project\, including reading the stories behind the submissions or to suggest a new site to be painted\, visit: https://www.disappointedtourist.org/ \n\n\nBio \nEllen Harvey is a British-born conceptual artist\, living and working in Brooklyn\, whose work ranges from guerrilla street interventions to immersive institutional installations to large-scale public artworks. Her work is painting-based but utilizes a wide variety of media and participatory strategies to explore a number of interconnected themes such as the social and ecological implications of the picturesque\, the revolutionary potential of ornament\, the detoxification of nostalgia and the role of art and the artist in our society. \nHer current project The Disappointed Tourist\, has formed the centerpiece of a traveling retrospective that has been exhibited at the Butler Gallery (Ireland)\, Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art (Poland)\, Museum der Moderne Salzburg (Austria) and Turner Contemporary (UK). The exhibition at Turner Contemporary was selected by Frieze as one of the five best institutional shows in the UK in 2021.  \nShe has exhibited extensively in the U.S. and internationally\, including in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. Solo museum exhibitions (other than her recent retrospective) have included the Barnes Foundation (Philadelphia)\, the Groeninge Museum (Belgium)\, the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington DC)\, the Bass Museum (Miami Beach)\, the Center for Contemporary Art (Warsaw\, Poland)\, the Pennsylvania Academy (Philadelphia) and the Whitney Museum at Altria (New York).  \nShe has completed large-scale public artworks for the Miami Beach Convention Center\, Metro-North’s Yankee Stadium station\, New York’s Queen’s Plaza subway station\, Chicago’s Francisco station\, Boston’s South Station\, the San Francisco Airport\, the Philadelphia International Airport\, the Andover Internal Revenue Service Offices and the Flemish National Architect. \nShe is the author of the recently reissued New York Beautification Project\, and her work has been the subject of four monographs to date.  \nShe is a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program\, Yale Law School and Harvard College and attended the Berlin Hochschule der Kunste in Germany (no degree). She is the recipient of numerous awards including most recently a Smithsonian Artists Research Fellowship\, the Wivina Demeester Prize for Commissioned Public Art and a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.  \nHer work is represented in numerous museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, Bass Museum of Art (Miami Beach)\, SMAK (Ghent\, Belgium)\, Berkeley Museum of Art\, Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences (West Virginia)\, Art Omi\, Museum der Moderne Salzburg\, Princeton Art Museum\, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art\, Gwangju Art Museum (Korea)\, Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea (Spain)\, among others. \nHarvey lives and works in Brooklyn and is represented by Locks Gallery (Philadelphia) and Meessen De Clercq (Brussels\, Belgium). \n\n\nBanner image:Installation view of The Disappointed Tourist\,© Ellen Harvey\, Turner Contemporary\, 2021.Photo credit: Thierry Bal.
