SUMMARY:Material Variations
DESCRIPTION:An art exhibit featuring three Philadelphia-based artists. Marria Nakhoda \, Cassie Renée Peña and Maria Fernanda Nuñez Alzate.\n\n\nMaterial VariationsOpening Reception Friday\, February 16th 6:00-8:00pmExhibit open February 16th – March 30th (Gallery open to the public Wed – Sat12:00-4:00pm)Kiosk Gallery at Utility Works – 32 E Baltimore Ave.\, Lansdowne\, PA 19050 \n \nMarria Nakhoda \nCassie Renée Peña \nMaria Fernanda Nuñez Alzate \nThese artists approach material with a reverent comedy. An amphora half coated in to-go foil\, the porcelain reminiscent of a cool brick of cream cheese. A ceramic stick fired in a wood kiln\, burnished glossy by the burning of that which it represents. Hefty brushes casually splay their leg-like bristles toward one another\, as if playing footsie. All three artists engage in material mimicry. Peña renders a classical greco-roman vessel form using non-western coiling methods. Nakhoda transforms clay–those preciously plastic fine grains of earth–back around into solid stone. Nuñez Alzate gestures dripping wax into a luscious broken egg white. In these works I find a particular affection for ordinary materials. Indeed\, in their own words these three embrace the common\, the overlooked\, the mundane\, the quotidian\, the humble\, the useless\, the provisional. They cannily mix high and low\, industrial and intimate\, ancient and contemporary. The effect is an equalizing of media. The mundane is uplifted\, the special is grounded. Material as material. – Zach Ozma\, curator

SUMMARY:Aluminum Flower Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn to make a wreath-sized flower out of repurposed aluminum cans!\n\n\nOh\, the possibilities of reuse! In this workshop\, you’ll learn to take aluminum cans from your favorite drinks and turn them into a wreath-sized flower to put in your garden\, on your door\, or anywhere inside or out! \n \nWho may participate? \n• Adults \n• Ages 14-17 with adult partner \nThis workshop is fun for family members to do together\, but keep in mind that some hand strength is needed to cut & staple the aluminum. \nWhat to bring? \n• 12-20 empty & clean aluminum cans. More cans = “fluffier” flower! \nRecommended to bring but not required – \n• A pair of pointed utility scissors or jewelers shears (not something you hope to cut fabric with later!) *** we will have some to share\, but may not have enough for everyone depending on attendance \n• Close-fitting work/garden gloves for protection against sharp edges (big & clunky gloves will be harder to work with) \n• Utility stapler to attach petals to wood base *** we will have some to share\, but these staplers can be hard on the hands\, so feel free to bring any easy-squeeze staplers you may have \n \nPlease email info@theresourceexchange.org with any questions
