SUMMARY:Bees: Foragers in Woody Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators in the woods? Explore the many ways wild bees nest and forage in woody habitats. Most native bees are solitary and have long evolutionary relationships with our beloved wildflowers and provide important pollination services which ensure the stability of many of our favorite fruits\, nuts\, and vegetables. In the northeastern US\, up to 1/3 of our wild bee species prefer and rely on forest habitats. Some are specialized to only collect pollen and nectar from spring ephemerals on the forest floor\, while others nest in rotting logs and in leaf litter deep in the woods. Join Kass Urban-Mead from the Xerces Society for an adventure exploring how wild bees use the woods–from the leafy forest floor to the tippy top of the canopy! A tour of the Trial Garden with Kass Urban-Mead and Mt. Cuba’s Manager of Horticulture Research\, Sam Hoadley will conclude the class. \nThis program takes place in person at Mt. Cuba Center on Wednesday\, May 15\, 2024. \n About the Instructor: \nKass is a Xerces Society Pollinator Conservation Specialist and a Partner Biologist providing technical support for NRCS conservation programs. For her PhD work at Cornell Entomology\, she studied pollen collection by wild bee communities active in early spring forest canopies and apple orchards. \nRegister Now \nMember Registration \n

SUMMARY:Hybrid Valley Talk - Discovering the Wissahickon's WPA Structures with Kate Cowing
DESCRIPTION:The small stone and log buildings along Forbidden Drive have captured the imagination of park users for years. They blend into the surroundings creating a feeling that they have always been part of it. They were constructed as part of a massive improvement project within the Wissahickon\, but were intentionally designed to disappear into the valley. \nJoin Kate Cowing and FOW as she explains the controversy leading up to their construction\, the history of the buildings\, and then on to the present. \nKate Cowing\, AIA\, is both an architectural conservator and a registered architect with more than 25 years of experience in preservation architecture. She is the principal of Kate Cowing Architect\, LLC (wbe) located here in Philadelphia. She has been honored with the title\, “Association for Preservation Technology – Recognized Professional.” This presentation stems from her graduate school thesis\, “The Analysis and Restoration of the WPA Outbuildings in the Wissahickon Valley” which has been presented both locally and nationally. \nRegister here to attend in person at the Valley Green Inn\nRegister here to attend virtually on Zoom

SUMMARY:Taxonomic Certification Opportunity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:What: Aquatic insect ecology workshop with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams. When: Course runs May 13 through 16\, 2024; Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on May 16.Where: Laurel Community Center\, 4100 NC 212 Highway\, Marshall\, NC 28753.\nAquatic Insect Ecology Workshop\nAquatic insects (benthic macroinvertebrates) play key roles in many regulatory water quality programs in North Carolina and the Southeast. These insects have been used by regulatory agencies to assess water pollution and trends in stream health since the mid-1970s. Many metrics have been developed to make the use of these data effective and understandable to non-biologists.\nBenthic insects are proposed as tools for the determination of stream restoration effectiveness and project prioritization by regulatory agencies. Despite the value of this group of organisms in regulatory programs\, very little is generally known about these insects as valuable regulatory tools. This workshop series will introduce participants to the ecology and taxonomy of aquatic insects.\nLevel 2 workshop is geared to environmental professionals:\nLocal\, state\, and federal aquatic ecologists; interagency review teams.\nBiologists with environmental consulting firms.\nFaculty and students with aquatic emphasis.\nManagers with citizen science programs.\nInformation and Registration\nIf you would like to take an exam at this event\, please fill out the Taxonomic Certification Exam Interest Form*. For more information\, visit the Schedule an Exam page.\n* This link may be blocked by some firewalls. If you cannot reach it\, please email tcp@stroudcenter.org to register.
