SUMMARY:Catch A Swoop of Swifts
DESCRIPTION:Though there are several swifts native to North America only one can be spotted east of the Rocky Mountains – the chimney swift (Chaetura pelagica). In Philadelphia they can be spotted by the hundreds diving into our chimneys during the fall migration. If you can find the right chimney\, this nightly descent is truly a wonder to behold. Join bird-enthusiast and nature guide Anisa George in learning more about this soot colored world traveler some people like to describe as a cigar with wings. We’ll meet up for a bowl of veggie chilli at a Germantown community park\, learn a bit about the bird\, then take a ten minute walk to a primary roosting chimney at dusk to see the wondrous swoop of swifts.

SUMMARY:How to Create Linocuts with Joy Lai
DESCRIPTION:Come learn how to carve your stamps using easy to carve Lino-cut. We will have the opportunity to create a collection of community stamps!\n\n\nThe second of our 2024 Linda Dubin Garfield Fellowship exhibition\, “Press Change” workshops! \n \nHow can the use of repeated images and/or text be used to amplify your message? What are some ways we can use stamps for protest and liberation? Come learn how to carve your stamps using easy to carve Lino-cut. We will have the opportunity to create a collection of stamps to use as a community. \nThis workshop is open to all! We invite everyone who is interested in diy printmaking methods and making work in community. \n \nOn Pressing Change Printmakers and educators Felisa Adderley\, Joy Lai and Sofie Rose Seymour pull from their experience in both worlds to examine the ways the act of printmaking intersects with the act of educating — and how both can be tools to share information and amplify movements. \nAdderley\, Lai and Seymour are the Linda Dubin Garfield fellows at Da Vinci Art Alliance and their exhibition is the product of a year’s work. Over the course of the fellowship\, these artists have asked\, “How can we empower people to use printmaking to work towards the changes that are so pressing in our world today?” \nLearn more at: davinciartalliance.org \n \nThis event and free and open to all. Suggested donation to attend is $10 per person. \nDVAA is a historic row home in the Bella Vista neighborhood. We are not yet wheelchair accessible; Da Vinci is a three floor gallery with narrow staircases. (We are working towards becoming ADA accessible by 2027!) It is 5 steps up to the first floor level\, and 14 steps from the first to second floor\, where the gender-neutral bathroom is located. Da Vinci has masks and COVID tests available at our events. We can reserve seats for low-vision and Deaf and HoH community members as needed. DVAA exhibitions are free to visit and all of our programs are free or suggested donation. If food is being served at the event you are coming to\, please reach out to us about dietary restrictions. For information\, or to notify our team members of any needs prior to your visit\, please contact info@davinciartalliance.org.

Vibrational healing is the ancient art of healing with sound; it traces back to ancient Egypt & Tibet. Sound vibrations can heal the physical body at a cellular level by adjusting blockages and imbalances. These imbalances can cause the body to have a slower frequency vibration which may lead to dis-ease or illnesses. Natural healing sound frequencies can be transferred or introduced externally or directly into the body to create a more harmonious state. \nAt Black Lotus\, we combine the use of crystal chakra singing bowls\, gongs\, tuning forks\, and more to give a relaxing & transformative experience. We can balance chakras\, repair auras\, uplift the mood or help with grounding. Vibrational healing is a great tool for meditation\, alleviating stress\, and relaxing stiff or sore muscles. \nFor more visit: www.diasporaeducationalservices.org/black-lotus \nhttps://linktr.ee/blacklotushhc \n\n\n\nDIRECTIONS: \n \nBlack Lotus is not on Lincoln Drive despite the address…it is actually on Rittenhousetown Lane. SUMMARY:FOREST BATHING AT SHOFUSO HOUSE
DESCRIPTION:Bathe in the autumnal beauty of a masterfully designed Japanese garden in the heart of Fairmount Park with a certified forest therapy guide. \nWhat will we do?\nForest Therapy\, also known as “Shinrin-Yoku\,” refers to the practice of spending time in forested areas for the purpose of enhancing health\, happiness\, and a sense of awe. The Japanese words translate into English as “Forest Bathing” and refers to bathing in the beneficial compounds which trees emit\, such as oxygen and phytoncides. \nWhy do I need a guide?\nWhile it’s true that no one needs a guide to benefit from a walk in the natural world\, a nature therapy guide can help unlock the door to new connection and intimacy with the environment by facilitating a series of invitations that cultivate presence\, calm\, and profound joy. Guides also create opportunities for people to connect with each other\, to witness and be witnessed in their process of discovery.

SUMMARY:Making Alcoholado with Iris Brown of Las Parcelas
DESCRIPTION:Join Iris on Saturday\, September 14 from 4-6 PM at the Norris Square Neighborhood Project for an alcoholado-making workshop.\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Anh Thai \n \nMaking Alcoholado with Iris Brown is scheduled for Saturday\, September 14\, from 4-6 PM\, with a rain date of Sunday\, September 15\, from 4-6 PM. The FREE workshop takes place at the Norris Square Neighborhood Project\, 2248 N Palethorp St\, Philadelphia\, PA. Parking is available surrounding the park. This event is fully wheelchair accessible and will be primarily in Spanish with English interpretation provided. The alcoholado workshop is organized in conjunction with Convalescence\, an immersive art installation by artist Pepón Osorio at Thomas Jefferson University. \n \nJoin Iris Brown for a workshop to create alcoholado. Alcoholado is a traditional Puerto Rican remedy made from the Malagueta tree and alcohol\, used to relieve fever\, muscle aches\, insect bites\, and more. Attendees will learn the art of using nature’s finest ingredients to create powerful homemade remedies and take their alcoholados home. A traditional vegan-friendly Puerto Rican meal will also be served at the event. \n \nIris Brown is dedicated to the rich exchange of culture\, agriculture\, and food\, amplifying this diasporic connection between her Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia and her hometown of Loíza. In the early 1980s\, Iris Brown co-founded Grupo Motivos\, bringing together Puerto Rican women from different parts of Puerto Rico\, united by the desire to use their surroundings to create beautiful spaces for their children and neighbors\, ultimately converting abandoned lots into award-winning gardens and ancestral education sites. She is the visionary force behind the Norris Square Neighborhood Project gardens; El Batey\, Las Parcelas\, the Butterfly Garden\, Raíces\, and Villa Africana Colobó. \n \n“Growing up in Loíza\, we hardly went to the clinic! There was a clinic with one nurse and one doctor to treat the whole town\, where they reused the needles after sanitizing them with boiling water\,” says Iris. “I grew up with my grandma\, my mother\, and many other wise women who knew the power of herbs and used them daily to help the neighbors and anybody who needed their care. In the garden\, Villa Africana Colobó\, I have planted various medicinal plants that I use to make teas and alcoholado… made with organic herbs we grow in this garden and one herb that is from Puerto Rico\, malagueta. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone to share more about your experiences with medicinal plants.” \n \nThank you to our community partner\, Norris Square Neighborhood Project\, for making this event possible. Major support for Convalescence has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, with additional support from the Wagner Foundation\, the Mellon Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \n \nQuestions? Contact Chelsea-Mia Pierre\, Public Programs Manager for Convalescence\, at chelseamia.pm@gmail.com. \n \nAbout Norris Square Neighborhood Project \nNorris Square Neighborhood Project is a unique organization that offers youth and community residents a safe space to explore culture and social justice issues\, create art\, and develop their sustainable agriculture skills. For over 45 years\, youth have developed their leadership skills\, built relationships with each other and their staff\, learned about urban agriculture\, and created performing and visual art. Annually\, they serve up to 100 high-school-aged youth through our after-school and summer programs. Norris Square Neighborhood Project also serves community members through innovative programming and their six Puerto Rican/Latinx culturally-themed garden spaces. Norris Square Neighborhood Project works in collaboration with The Philadelphia Horticultural Society. To learn more about the Norris Square Neighborhood Project\, please visit https://myneighborhoodproject.org/. \n \nAbout Convalescence \nThomas Jefferson University presents Convalescence\, an immersive installation by internationally renowned\, Philadelphia-based artist Pepón Osorio. Convalescence is free and open to all from September 3 to November 1\, 2024\, on Jefferson’s health sciences campus in Center City Philadelphia\, continuing Osorio’s practice of premiering works in the environments that inform them. Convalescence is rooted in the artist’s personal experience of cancer diagnosis and treatment. The project highlights systemic health and health care inequities in the U.S. and includes stories from other Philadelphians of color who have lived through\, or are currently experiencing\, life-threatening illnesses. Drawing on relationships with groups typically underserved by the health care system\, Osorio’s installation explores the nature of community-based care. The project extends Jefferson’s ongoing medical humanities program\, which engages students in the arts and humanities in parallel with their health professions education. A series of public programs created with community-based partners will be coordinated in conjunction with the installation. To learn more about Convalescence\, go to Jefferson.edu/Convalescence.

Learn about Collagraphs and an inkless printmaking method using crayons and recycled cardboard.\n\n\n \nThe first of our 2024 Linda Dubin Garfield Fellowship exhibition\, “Press Change” workshops! \nIn this workshop\, we will use our understanding of shape and symbolism to make prints about community and care\, as well as collaborate on a group print. Learn about Collagraphs and an inkless printmaking method using crayons and recycled cardboard. \nThis workshop is open to all! We invite everyone who is interested in diy printmaking methods and making work in community. This workshop is the participants will use scissors.
