SUMMARY:Stormwater Runoff: Management and Regulation
DESCRIPTION:Join Climate Action PA and Speaker Brent Walls of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network to discuss the detrimental effects of nonpoint source pollution; particularly stormwater runoff\, and how it is affecting the city of Philadelphia and its surrounding regions. The Philadelphia Water Department launched a 25-year initiative in 2011 titled Green City\, Clean Waters; this program had the goals of reducing overall stormwater pollution as well as improving city wastewater capacity and quality of treatment centers. We will be diving into this initiative as well as how the requirements are enforced by organizations and agencies. Throughout this event\, we will learn about the issues surrounding stormwater mitigation\, new technologies being developed and implemented within the city\, and ways in which you can be an informed and involved community member on this environmental issue!

SUMMARY:To Sing the Truth and Name the Liars: Bearing Witness Under Erasure
DESCRIPTION:Egyptian writer and activist Abdelrahman ElGendy reflects on his experience as a political prisoner.\n\n\nAbdelrahman ElGendy\, Egyptian writer and activist \nAbdulrahman Atta\, Lecturer in Arabic\, Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations\, University of Pennsylvania \nIn the heart of the 2011 Egyptian revolution\, Abdelrahman ElGendy’s journey from a Cairo marathon runner to a six-year political prisoner at the age of 17 intertwines with both tragedy and resistance. His story transcends mere survival; it is an exploration of language\, love\, and the relentless pursuit of justice in a world turned upside down by political upheaval. \nThrough Abdelrahman ElGendy’s eyes\, we will experience the transformation from a bystander to an active participant in the Arab Spring\, a change that leads to his unjust imprisonment for over six years. In prison\, writing becomes a significant tool for his survival and continued activism. \nThe special conversation between ElGendy and Penn Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations’ Lecturer in Arabic Abdulrahman Atta invites us to explore critical questions: What does it mean to inhabit a space designed to erase you and insist on being? Where do untold stories go? How do we bear witness and speak into archival silences? \nA program of the Wolf Humanities Center’s 2023–2024 Forum on Revolution \n_____________________________ \nAbdelrahman ElGendy is an Egyptian writer and activist. For six years—between 2013 and 2020—he was a political prisoner in Egypt. ElGendy’s writing engages with creative counter-narratives of history as a form of resistance to erasure and cultural genocide. His work appears in The Washington Post\, Foreign Policy\, AGNI\, Truthout\, New Lines Magazine\, Mada Masr\, and elsewhere. ElGendy is a Dietrich fellow at the University of Pittsburgh’s Nonfiction Writing MFA\, a Heinz fellow at Pitt’s Global Studies Center\, a 2021 Logan Nonfiction fellow\, a 2023 Tin House scholar\, an awardee of the 2023 Katharine Bakeless Nason Award in Nonfiction by Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, and a finalist for the 2021 and 2023 Margolis Award for Social Justice Journalism. \n_____________________________ \nAbdulrahman Atta is a Lecturer of Arabic Language and Culture in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania. As a senior at Al Azhar University in December 2013\, Abdulrahman was arrested during a demonstration against the military coup in Egypt. After his request to take the prior year’s exams was approved\, he managed to graduate in 2015 and finish his sentence in December 2016 . During his time at Wadi al Netron Prison\, Abdulrahman and a group of Al Azhar and Ain Shams university students cofounded Almadrasa school in an effort to help students graduate\, and to learn about what is going on in the world at the time of their sentence. In 2017\, two months after his release\, Abdulrahman was accepted at College of The Holy Cross Foreign Language Assistants Program and moved to Massachusetts\, where he finished his Graduate studies at Framingham State University and taught at Boston University and College of The Holy Cross.

SUMMARY:Green New Deal Realities: Insights from the US\, Germany\, and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Gunn-Wright and Schaible will discuss American and German variants of green new deal policies and politics.\n\n\nJoin us for this event featuring Rhiana Gunn-Wright\, Director of Climate Policy at the Roosevelt Institute\, and Jonas Schaible\, Reporter and Editor at Der Spiegel. Daniel Aldana Cohen\, Assistant Professor of Sociology at University of California\, Berkeley\, will moderate. Gunn-Wright and Schaible will discuss American and German variants of green new deal policies and politics\, paying close attention to success stories as well as political and technological roadblocks. Together\, their analysis brings the broad transnational public support for green spending into focus\, and they will highlight success stories in greening the economy in both countries. The speakers will also delve into the various challenges to green infrastructure–from fiscal conservatives’ resistance to debt spending to the resurgence of radical rightwing movements in many parts of the world some of whom even call green policy “ecofascism.” In conversation\, our speakers will not only identify obstacles to GND implementation but also explore possible paths to a carbon neutral or even carbon negative economy.

SUMMARY:Repurposed Energy
DESCRIPTION:This public lecture analyzes repurposed energy as a critical solution to the many theoretical and real impediments to the energy transition.\n\n\nThis is a hybrid event. For those attending virtually\, a Zoom link will be sent out the day of the event.\nBoxed lunches will be available to go following the talk!\n\n\nAs the impacts of climate change from drought\, fire\, flooding\, and heat waves become increasingly dire\, there is growing urgency in accelerating a clean energy transition from fossil fuels to zero-carbon energy infrastructure. At the same time\, however\, the hurdles to accomplishing such a massive industrial-scale transition seem increasingly high. These obstacles include governance structures\, political economy\, decision-making dynamics\, and environmental justice concerns. The impacts of these obstacles are very real and apparent\, with large renewable energy generation and transmission projects regularly facing denials or uneconomical delays. \nWith respect to governance\, a mismatch between the scale of projects and the level of the regulator hinders development\, with local governments retaining permitting authority for projects of statewide importance\, and state governments retaining permitting authority for projects of regional or national importance. Political economic barriers also abound and are particularly large in this space; the bulk of the energy infrastructure for the transition—aptly-named wind and solar “farms”—must be constructed in rural and rustbelt communities\, where opposition to a clean energy transition is strongest as a political matter. And on the other side of the political aisle\, progressive communities and environmental advocacy groups oppose many clean energy projects for their potential adverse aesthetic and environmental impacts in both rural and urban areas. Relatedly\, the impacts of excessive “proceduralism” flowing from the political left also loom large: numerous permitting and environmental review requirements piled onto individual clean energy projects often ultimately kill them. And concerns about perpetuating historic injustices in energy siting—placing more infrastructure in already-overburdened communities or failing to ensure that benefits flow to marginalized communities—are vivid\, and real. \nYet there is a potential solution—“repurposed energy”—that can overcome many of these barriers by building the bulk of new clean energy infrastructure on marginal farmlands\, abandoned coal mines and coal plants\, and other underutilized or abandoned contaminated properties\, often called brownfields. Focusing on such lands comes at a perfect moment. The massive infusion of money from the Infrastructure\, Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 can make a repurposed energy transition a reality\, particularly in rural America and post-industrial communities. In this public lecture\, Kleinman Center Visiting Scholar Alexandra Klass will analyze repurposed energy as a critical solution to the many theoretical and real impediments to the energy transition. \nSpeaker\nAlexandra B. Klass is the James G. Degnan Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. She teaches and writes in the areas of energy law\, environmental law\, natural resources law\, tort law\, and property law. In 2022 and 2023\, she served in the Biden-Harris administration as deputy general counsel for energy efficiency and clean energy demonstrations at the U.S. Department of Energy. \n\n\nPlease note this is a hybrid event. We look forward to welcoming guests to the Kleinman Center’s Energy Forum. In accordance with the University of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines\, masks are optional for all visitors. Boxed lunches will be available to go following the event!

SUMMARY:Sourcing at Magic Education: Sustainable from the Start
DESCRIPTION:Join virtually and catch a live stream of panel topic “Sustainable from the Start” taking place at Sourcing at Magic\, Las Vegas.\n\n\nVirtual Live Stream of Education Session: Sustainable from the Start \nIt’s the perfect way to join if you’re unable to make it in-person to the Sourcing at Magic\, Las Vegas show February 14th! Panel begins promptly at 12:30pm PT/3:30pm ET and will be recorded. Thirty minutes before the event begins\, registered attendees will be emailed the event Zoom link. \nSustainable from the Start Education Topic: \nBig business is in the crosshairs first\, but sooner – not later – every brand and every designer will need to account for the footprint of their collections. From facing fines to being refused retail space\, or even having shipments turned away at the border\, the risks of not knowing the sustainability profile of your products are getting higher. \nBut what does it actually mean to start building that knowledge now? How far can technology help? And when you do have the data to understand your impact\, how can you act on it without completely overhauling the way you work? \nJoin Ben and Camille for a breakdown of the mandate and the mechanics for a new model of design and sourcing that starts with impact in mind. Then start your sustainable sourcing journey! \nSpeakers: \nBen Hanson\, Editor-in-Chief\, The Interline \nCamille Tagle\, Co-Founder + Creative Director\, FABSCRAP \nConsider adding a donation to FABSCRAP when registering: \nYour gift can help fund FAB essentials like our warehouse supplies such as scissors\, duct tape\, trash bags\, gaylord boxes\, and pallets! \n\n$10 Donation provides each sorting station with staple removers or scissors for deconstructing fabric headers\, and also helps cover the routine scissor sharpening maintenance.\n$30 Donation covers one box of black or clear trash bags used to sort and store scraps.\n$50 Donation will pay for one gaylord and/or pallet. We use about 10 per month to store and transport our scraps for recycling.
